M.C. Escher also known as Maurits Cornelis Escher lived from 1898 to 1972. During his lifetime he made over 2000 drawings and sketches and 448 lithographs, woodcuts and engravings. He is most famous for his Transformation Prints, such as Metamorphosis I, Metamorphosis II and Metamorphosis III, Sky & Water I or Reptiles as well as his so-called impossible constructions, such as Ascending and Descending and Relativity,. Escher was also left-handed just like Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci. Escher illustrated books, designed tapestry, postage stamps, and murals and was a graphic artist. He then switched to the decorative arts where he studied under Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita. It was then that Escher began with his experience in drawing and making woodcuts. .After school, he traveled through italy, where he meet his wife Jetta Umiker. In 1924 Escher married Jetta Umiker, and the couple settled in Rome to raise a family. Cornelius and his wife Jetta had three children; George, Arthur and Jan. (When George was christened, Mussolini and King Emmanuel came.) They resided in Italy until 1935, when growing political turmoil forced them to move first to Switzerland, then to Belgium. In 1941, with World War II under way and German troops occupying Brussels, Escher returned to Holland and settled in Baarn, where he lived and worked until shortly before his death. During the time Escher lived in italy he traveled throughout, drawing and sketching for his prints. Many sketches he used for later use for lithographs, woodcuts, and wood engravings. Escher became fascinated by the regular Division of the Plane, when he first visited the Alhambra, a fourteenth century Moorish castle in Granada, Spain in 1922. M.C.
