Joseph Mccarthy Case Analysis

...McCarthy was elected to the Senate in 1946 and rose to prominence in 1950 when he claimed in a speech that 205 communists had infiltrated the State Department. McCarthy’s subsequent search for communists in the Central Intelligence Agency, the State Department, and elsewhere made him an incredibly polarizing figure. After McCarthy’s reelection in 1952, he obtained the chairmanship of the Committee on Government Operations of the Senate and of its Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. For the next two years he was constantly in the spotlight, investigating various government departments and questioning innumerable witnesses about their suspected communist affiliations. Although he failed to make a plausible case against anyone, his colourful...

Cormac Mccarthy The Road Essay

...The book “The Road” by Cormac McCarthy is a post-apocalyptic fiction book. It’s a story about a man with a young boy walking south to find there way to the coast for a presumed better life through a nuclear winter. Although the book doesn’t state where it’s taking place, one can infer that it’s somewhere in the United States. The major characters of this book are the man and the young boy. The man is the opposite of an open book, personality wise. He has no one to talk to about his thoughts because him and his son are alone. His words are plain and simple, yet interesting. All he does is care for the boy the best way he can. Whenever they encounter strangers he is stern because he wants to keep his son safe. The boy on the other hand voices his thoughts. If he has a question, he will ask it. The boy as well cares about his father. The boy is strong when need to be, but is also compassionate towards strangers. The whole book is based on the journey of both the father and child. The whole conflict of the book is that the boy and the father are trying to get to the coast by surviving the horror of storms, winter, cannibalism, and most of all, the...

C. Mccarthy

...Crossing by Cormac McCarthy, the narrator tells of an experience of a boy burying a wolf in the mountains, but there is some sort of unwritten connection between him and the wolf. The author uses imagery and syntax to illustrate the complex feelings of sadness that the boy experiences. Elaborate diction is combined to suggest a somber, grieving setting while allusions within the text indicate a reverence the boy has developed toward the wolf and the event. Personification of the wolf and the fire indicate a deeper assimilation to nature felt by the boy. The poem's syntax is fairly regular up until the second paragraph, where the first sentence is connected by “and” eight times. This technique tends to draw in a sense of thoughtless routine. Typically when a death occurs, there is that beginning grief stage of denial where all senses are numbed by the force of the reality, and the layout of the sentence only seems to add to that sense of restlessness the narrator felt was necessary to illustrate the boy's consciousness. “Tall escarpments” and “grassy swale” are used to indicate how small the boy and his wolf are and the insignificance of the death. Essentially, it is saying that it is nature for things like this to happen and the fact that it is uncommon for anyone to take note of something so small in the world. This only amplifies the feelings the boy has toward the death, and causes him more grief. Choice vocabulary is the main technique used by McCarthy to convey the...

The Crucible Literary Analysis

...display similar characteristics to that of those in the Red Scare. Abigail Williams is directly parallel to Joseph Mccarthy. Both of these people use sly trickery to create mass chaos and fear. McCarthy built himself upon a false pillar of lies and deception similar to Abigail who created false stories of witchcraft to save herself. Throughout the actions, she would always provide false reassurance to those who doubted her, “I never sold myself! I’m a good girl! I'm a proper girl!” (Miller pg 40). As Abby moved forward she began to manipulate the fear that was created similar to McCarthy. McCarthy used the fear to gain power, often in fear there is chaos and in chaos people become blind to the truth and therefore they believed McCarthy. When Abby began the tale of witchcraft, she created both fear and chaos that would blind Salem from seeing that it was all a lie. For both, as the lies continued they would create larger lies and accusations, similar to the mass arrests main in the Palmer Raids. At one point McCarthy claimed that he held a list of 250 names (Malaspina pg14). In the Crucible, Abby created a false scene of a figure in the courthouse coming to attack her, “Look out! She’s coming down!” (Miller pg.109). Once their plans took action the fear engulfed their place of residents. In both cases, once fear took control, there was chaos and disbelief. McCarthy turned neighbors on neighbors, families on families. During the Red Scare everyone was scared and paranoid of communism...

The Crucible Allegory Essay

...Innocent people die everyday. Some may have died because of violent actions, but some are killed because of a much more frightening reason: A corrupt court system. Courts are put in place to protect us, and when their justice has rotted from the inside, it leads to chaotic and brutal societies. One of these societies, Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692, is described in the play, “The Crucible.” Written in the McCarthy era, this play highlights the injustices during the Red Scare in America. As history continues to unfold, more links can be drawn between the message of “The Crucible” and today’s discrimination. The allegorical qualities of Arthur Miller’s, “The Crucible,” relate strongly to McCarthyism, but still have relevant connections to...

A River Runs Through It Analysis

...A River Runs through It, by Norman Maclean, is the coming-of-age story of the author and his brother, Paul. Sons of a Scottish Presbyterian minister and his wife, the two boys grow up in a small town in western Montana at the turn of the last century. Born in 1902, Maclean wrote this story as part memoir, partly for his brother and a beautiful way of life in Montana, both of which are now lost. Written when Maclean was in his seventies, the novel attempts to immortalize a time, place, and people, now lost to the author: a more brutal yet innocent time, an unspoiled landscape, a brother’s uncanny talents for fishing and trouble, and a father’s love, support, and guidance. Norman speaks nostalgically, but not sentimentally, of the events that...

Invasion Of The Body Snatchers Essay

...The 1950’s were a time of fear and paranoia within the United States. During this time Cold War tensions were beginning to intensify giving way to the infamous Red Scare and the communist allegations of Joseph McCarthy. In the late 1940’s and early 1950’s, the communal American fear of communist subversion reached its peak, colloquially known as the Red Scare. At this time, fewer than 50,000 out of the 150 million people, less than 1%, living in the United States belonged to the communist party, however the country remained in a state of panic. As a result of this hysteria, a senator named Joseph McCarthy began making accusations against alleged communist infiltration of government agencies. Therefore, the term McCarthyism, coined by political cartoonist Herbert Block, came to mean the movement to expose Communist subversives in the government and other important public institutions from the late 1940s to the mid 1950s. How Did Joseph Mccarthy Create The Red Scare

...Having dirt on anyone can scare even the cleanest people because people in general are scared of what they don't know. That is exactly what Joseph McCarthy did to so many people. As a result McCarthyism created the Red Scare by making accusations against people for being Communist. McCarthy claimed to have 57 cases of individuals who could have been members of the Communist Party. In (Document 1) he says “I have in my hand 57 cases of individuals who would appear to be either card carrying members or certainly loyal to the Communist Party, but who nevertheless are still helping to shape our foreign policy.” Even though he said he had proof, he would never show anyone that proof which would have justified the accused of being scared. This occurred during times when the US and Soviet Union were teasing each other with nuclear war, also known as The Cold War. After McCarthy accused everyone of these charges things starts to get out of control. The HUAC gets established to investigate un-american activities going on, and their first investigation was on the movie industry. This led to the creation of which became to be known as the “Hollywood Ten”. They...
