Mentoring Attitudes Underpinning Guilt

While the quote above is taken out of context, its tenet holds as reading this chapter will show. Guilt, regardless of context, is self-limiting. The essence of mentoring mindedness assists mentees understand that many of their perceived constraints are actually cognitive and emotional impediments that have taken hold, based on self-limiting and rigid assumptions and attitudes about the reasons underlying them and how they might move beyond this. The importance of reflection and feedback through mentoring is important in questioning these assumptions and attitudes underpinning guilt. The mentor works with the mentee to enhance their self-awareness as a way of encouraging them to achieve their aspirations and overcoming guilt along the way. …show more content…
However guilt is primarily a reactional stance by a mentee to the internal sentients which are often perceived as being externally imposed. Moreover a person may have experienced guilt for so long that it is now a deep-seated part of their self-concept as well as self-preservation which impedes their development as they respond to its negative rather than positive components. All emotions develop as a response to an external or internal impetus. Emotions are useful in some situations, impediments in others but all serve some function at the time when they occur. Emotions become dysfunctional when they no longer serve their purpose, prolonged and block personal development (Izard, 1977). When emotions become dysfunctional, they undermine the opportunity for realistic self-assessment. It is at this point of dysfunctionality that a person may decide they need assistance not realising the part that guilt as an overriding emotion may be contributing to their

Generation Y in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and four cities in mainland China were studied. How the social environment influenced their attitudes and behavior in work and geographical mobility, and how geographical mobility created problems to the migrants were studied. Design/methodology/approach – The first phase was a survey on a sample of 272 BPO/ITES employees, using Gallup q12 or Gallup Workplace Audit. Focus group interview discussion was based on reasons for attrition and the unique problems of employee engagement. In the second phase, one of the BPO organizations from the phase I sample was chosen at random and exit interview data was analyzed using factor analysis and content analysis. Findings – The results were in the expected direction and fulfilled the research aims of the current study. In the first phase low factor loadings indicated low engagement scores at the beginning of the career and at completion of 16 months with the organization. High factor loadings at intermediate stages of employment were indicative of high engagement levels, but the interview data reflected that this may mean high loyalty, but only for a limited time.
