...Crime Causation and Diversion Mindy Mohr CJA/374 June 17, 2015 Sarah Boucher Crime Causation and Diversion In this paper, there will be a comparison of two different prevention program that was chosen. From those two intervention programs, there will be a discussion on how the programs work in reducing juvenile crime, and based on the analysis of the relationship between program premise and goals and one or more major causes of juvenile delinquent behavior. In another discussion, there will be explanations of what the two intervention programs major goals are, the programs objectives, and what the programs core beliefs are. The key participants that are involved in these programs will also be explained, as well as what services they provide for the youth. The last discussion will be identifying which one of the programs between the two is more effective at reducing juvenile crime and why. The two programs that I have chosen are the Father and Son prevention Program, and the YES (Youth Empowerment Solutions) prevention program. The Father and Son project is in Michigan and is a program designed for African American fathers and their sons ranging in age from 10-14 ("Michigan Youth Violence Prevention Center", 2015). The Father and Son prevention Program is aimed to heighten the parenting behaviors as well as reducing the risk of youth behaviors. With this program, it helps the father and son bond so that way in the future the son would not have self-esteem issues or...

...chose are Operation Peacekeeper, which is a problem oriented policing program in Stockton, CA and the Gang Reduction Program (GRP) found in Richmond, VA. Both of these programs aim to reduce youth gang violence and gang crime. Operation Peace keeper also aims to reduce gang involvement, along with gang violence by conveying to young gang members, or those at risk of becoming gang members the severe and dire consequences of gang violence. Operation Peace keeper delivers its message through the use of youth outreach workers who are familiar with the streets and the challenges these youth face. Youth outreach workers serve as mentors and role models and make sure youth understand the consequences of gang activity and inform the youth that there are other positive routes in life versus gang involvement. Operation Peacekeeper has reduced very positive results gun homicides decreased by 35% between 1997-2002. Prior to the intervention there were 2.9 gun homicides the monthly average then dropped to 1.9 during the intervention. After the peace keeper intervention ended there was a slight increase in gun homicides with the monthly average being 2.1, which was still a significant reduction....

...Something needs to be done about the media, and all the violence that is promoted, and being viewed by our youth all over the world. The media has no regard for our youth, and the influence they have on them. In my opinion, it is all about the money, and the ratings. There is a bigger issue out there besides both of those things. Our youth is being exposed to so much violence; they are becoming immune to it. Today, it is the norm for them. All media is to blame, but in my opinion, electronic media is the biggest culprit. The youth of today are being consumed by all types of electronic devices. Violence is big business in the media. No matter if it is Facebook, YouTube, music on an IPod, internet radio, MySpace, or any other of the sites on the internet or electronic devices, violence is present in some way or another. There are youth out there in society that are committing heinous violent acts, just for the fun of it. What I want to know is when did violence become fun? Kids listen to gangster rap, and believe everything they hear. (Dawursk Jr 2007) In 1994, two teenagers that murdered a police officer from Milwaukee, stated, they did it “just for the fun of it”, because they were influenced by “2Pacalypes Now”, a song by @ Pac Shakur. Everywhere you look, there is a kid walking with some type of electronic device, with ear plugs on. (International Telecommunication Union) In 2008 61% of the world population uses cell phones, in 2000 only 12% used cell phones. The cell phones...

...Punishment - That is the Question! For someone who committed a serious crime, prison may be a revelation, but for our youth that commit such crimes, the results could be daunting, even detrimental to the development of the youth. In most instances, the youth does not even realize the consequences to their actions. The juvenile justice system began with the concept parens patriae, meaning when a parent is no longer fit to provide for the welfare of a child, the state must step in and embody that role and provide protection for the wayward or troubled child” (St. Mary’s Law Journal, 2013). The juvenile justice system’s core concept is rehabilitation or change of our youth to the right path. The goal of punishment is not one of revenge, but prevention that the crime will not happen again. Putting our youth in adult prisons, making them face the penalties of such crimes, but if we do this, are we just giving up on our youth, believing that they cannot be rehabilitated? We, the people, need protection for the child that does not know better than to join a gang, the troubled child that comes from a broken home, where both parents are absent or abusive. The people of this community need to make a change for these children so that they will have an opportunity to live a morally healthy life instead of a life of crime. Many questions come up with regard to prosecuting those juveniles that have committed a serious crime and how to rehabilitate or punish our youth, juvenile gangs and...

...Domestic Violence and the Effect that it has on African American Families B. Hope Faulkner-Ridley & Rakia Harris Argosy University Dr. Dionne Gavin Abstract This proposal explains the need for this type of service in the South Shore Community regarding Domestic Violence and Children and the effects related to Domestic Violence. Helping Hand Inc. was founded with this population in mind. Every year an estimated 3.3 million to 10 million children are exposed to domestic violence in their home. (Carlson 1984; Straus 1992) Studies investigating the prevalence of child abuse find that almost 900,000 children are classified as maltreated by parents and other caretakers (United States Department of Health and Human Services 2006). The study which we used to incorporate this program, examines the outcome of family violence and resilience in individuals and families. Results show that child abuse, domestic violence, and both in combinations (i.e. double exposure) increases a child’s risk for internalizing and externalizing outcomes in adolescence. (Journal of Family Violence 2010) Name and address of organization The name of the organization is Helping Hand Inc. which is located at 7700 South Shore Dr. Chicago, Il 60635. This is the headquarters and this location is where all services will be rendered. There is another location for family housing only and it is located at 7715 S. South Shore Dr. Chicago, Il 60635. ...| Domestic Violence | | | Veronica Crews | DeVry University | | INTRODUCTION Do the problems with our economy have any effect on the increasing number of domestic violence reportings? Money problems are always a risk factor in relationships. Due to the downfall of job losses, the falling of the financial markets, and foreclosed homes, there has been more tension in homes. As a result, organizations that deal with domestic violence and substance abuse are bracing for more demand for their services, even as the recession is forcing some to cut budgets and lay off their own personnel. Although an economic downturn itself does not cause domestic violence, it can increase the factors that contribute to domestic violence and reduce victim's ability to leave. (Kalson, 2008). According to the National Network to End Domestic Violence 24-hour census, “the economic climate may give batterers additional leverage when using emotional and financial abuse to control their partners” (Feb. 2009). Domestic abuse occurs when one person in an intimate relationship or marriage tries to dominate and control the other person. Domestic abuse that includes physical violence is called domestic violence. Domestic violence and abuse are used for one purpose and one purpose only: to gain and maintain control over someone. The abuser doesn’t play fair. They use intimidation, fear, shame, and guilt to wear someone down and keep that person under his or her thumb. The abuser...

...Minors involved in the jihad warriors Name Institution Course Tutor Date Minors involved in the jihad warriors Introduction The numbers of child delinquents that are handled in the nation's juvenile courts have increased over the past few decades. This is a major concern because offense patterns reflect more serious crimes among the youngsters, and the young offenders are more likely to continue with criminal acts. Child delinquents are more liable to become serious and violent offenders than youths whose delinquent behavior begins in the teens. Several studies indicate increased cases of violence committed by young children, which have resulted in children delinquents inflicting more deadly harm. For this reason, child delinquents represent a significant problem for the society. Several studies show that young males are associated with multitude Jihad warriors. The perpetrators are likely to be between 15 to 25 years. Adolescence brings a dramatic increase in the number of people who are willing to offend, generally between 15 and 18 years. With Jihad wars, the same factors attract young men to deviant activity can play a significant role in the attraction terrorism hold. Higher impulsivity, great confidence, and attraction to risk –taking gives a particular appeal to some young males. In addition, a desire for revenge and retribution is also a common motive for joining terrorist groups. Research indicates that...

...Juvenile delinquency is the act of criminal behavior by juveniles (usually someone under the age of eighteen) who can’t be prosecuted as adults. There is no clear way to fully prevent juveniles from committing crimes, just like there’s no way of stopping all crimes in adults. The purpose of trying juveniles in a separate system is to provide them with education and rehabilitation in hopes they won’t continue the criminal behavior as an adult. Statistics and studies in the last decade have proven that there are many successful ways of preventing crimes in our youth, and it not only involves parents but mentors in our schools and communities. A 2008 study estimated that over 60% of children in the United States were exposed to violence, crime or abuse within that year. (Finkelhor, 2011) Regardless of whether it occurred in school, at home, or somewhere else, it just shows the huge effect that criminal behavior has on us at an early age. Although most of these crimes are surely not serious, juvenile offenders were known to be involved in 8% of all homicides in the United States in 2010. (OJJDP, 2012) It’s impossible to determine the motive of every single juvenile who commits a crime, just like it’s impossible to determine the motive of every adult. There are, however, many factors that may influence a juvenile to commit a crime. Studies show social and cultural factors play a big role when it comes to determining why juveniles commit crimes. Poverty might cause a child to steal...

...Budget Request: Hiring New Officers in the Community. Lafisha Hinton Strayer University PAD 505: Public Budgeting and Finance Dr. Joseph Keller November 4, 2012 Budget Request: Hiring New Officers in the Community. In this paper I will be discussing a budget request for hiring new police officers in the community due to an increase in crime that has been announced by a concerned council member. The rate of police officer hiring is growing but at a moderate rate this paper will discuss how the community can see an exponential decrease in crime with the increase of police officers within the community. There is relevant information that is documented that reveals that the crime in the community is decreasing so the documented information will be compared to the council member’s information and we will come to a common ground on the hiring of the officers and the increase and decrease of crime rate within the community. Also discussed in this budget will be the responsibility of each officer. Police Officers are responsible for protecting and serving the public, the public has the right to believe that they will be protected by the individuals who are sworn as officers within the community. Justification One There is an immediate need to hire three to five more officers to enhance our already thirty uniformed officers. The council member observed that the crime in the downtown area is...

...“Management of Human Services Program” discusses the human service organization as a group of people large or small working together to improve the live served (Lewis, Packard, Lewis, 2007). Human Service Organizations come in when people facing various social problems have no support systems to help them in overcoming their issues. The settings in which human service professionals practice can vary. Lewis, Packard, and Lewis mention tiny storefront agencies to multifaceted community organizations to statewide public service departmental settings (2007). However, these settings may also include such settings as: halfway houses, mental health facilities, group homes, child, and youth service agencies, drug abuse and prevention programs, community health centers, family violence services, or aging services. Whichever of these settings human service professionals may find themselves in the goal is common, to improve service delivery, and to assist in...

...generalized patterns of social activities in a society and tells when a crime occurs 3 things happen, A mentor is missing, an offender is present and an easy target is identified. It has more to do with human Ecology and rational choice theory Which indicates that anyone can commit a crime if given an opportunity. Lifestyle approach mostly indicates towards the nonexistent rule of the society and the government about prevention of crime. The people who are well connected and Elite class take it easy to commit a crime and they see opportunity and the victim easily and don't feel guilty about it. 3 predictions that I will mention here is it's easy to commit a crime it's easy to find a victim and also the perpetrator is not responsible towards society. 7. The rational choice theory defines how people are free to decide on their actions and the way they get motivated towards crime if the action is free of pain and provides more pleasure. The person here weighs the cost involved and the benefits that he gets and accordingly decide his actions. This theory can be traced back to the work of Cesare Beccaria which is related to utilitarian belief. The basic assumptions here would be that the person is not coerced into any decision, he is free to decide on his own and he will always measure the benefits against the efforts involved. 8. If we observe the society closely we will find that violence is obviously a matter of choice and people become violent as per the opportunity and the cost involved...

Between the ages 15 to 24 years old 100 to 200 attempts are made, 500,000 in the United States seek help in emergency rooms; an estimated 6.5 billion in non-fata, self-inflicted medical cost. The initiative seeks to apply ecological approaches normally dedicated to specialized populations; the approach will intrinsically identify suicide victims through venues and or genres. Public suicide prevention efforts could encompass and engage participants via screening...
