Mercedes-Benz a fully owned subsidiary of Daimler, 12th largest automobile manufacturer in the world, was planning to relocate its manufacturing operation in Pune, a new facility at Chakan, an industrial area developed by the provincial government of Maharashtra.
Rajeev Jorapur, CIO, Mercedes Benz India Pvt. LTD, was to oversee the installation of IT infrastructure system at the new plant. An internal study at MBI had forecast an eight fold increase in production and sales volume. The environment was so bullish that co decided to develop 25% of the land in the first phase with an investment of $35 million. The rest of the land for earmarked for future expansion.
The IT relocation project involved managing the physical shifting of the servers, equipment and user desktops from the old location to the new one. The shifting involved a choice. MBI could take a downtime straight away but they could be a risk that downtime might be extended due to unforeseen events like a server failing to boot up. Alternatively MBI could develop a temporary parallel system at the time of actual shifting to avoid any unforeseen event but it would involve technological challenges and higher cost.
MBI data centre accommodated various kinds of servers- file servers, network servers, print servers and so on. More than 50 servers were used in the co’s production environment and 25 servers were used for testing and development. These servers occupied space and were a major source of energy consumption in a data centre. However Rajeev Jorapur was keen in testing the new technological innovation known as the “blade server” which used less space and decreased operating cost significantly but required a higher capital investment upfront.
