After his death, Abraham Lincoln as character was hugely associated with American traditions such as the clergy, Moses, martyrdom and George Washington. In fact, Lincoln was seen as something which Washington was not: a common man. In his book The Martyr President: Our Grief and Our Duty, published in 1865, J.G. Butler considered Abraham Lincoln as the father of his country. In his opinion, Butler saw Lincoln as the Savior who is under the protection of God. In addition, Merrill D. Peterson admits, in his book Lincoln In American Memory, that five themes of Lincoln’s myth developed immediately after his death: Savior of the Union, Great Emancipator, Man of the People, First American, and Self-Made Man. Abraham Lincoln was coined by these nicknames.
