Facebook's Organizational Structure
“An organizational structure defines the scope of acceptable behavior within an organization, its lines of authority and accountability, and to some extent the organization's relationship with its external environment. More specifically, it shows the pattern or arrangement of jobs and groups of jobs within an organization and yet it is more than an organizational chart. The organizational structure pertains to both reporting and operational relationships, provided they have some degree of permanence. The individual elements of an organizational structure typically include a variety of components that one may usefully see as building blocks: departments or divisions; management hierarchy; rules, procedures, and goals; and more temporary building blocks such as task forces or committees” (Inc., n.d.).
Social networking sites like Facebook have a strong organizational structure that is appropriate for their particular product, social media. These sites may seem so simple that they do not require structure to operate but you will learn that is not the case. Facebook launched in 2004 and is one of the most popular social networking sites. “Mark Zuckerberg is the CEO of Facebook. The rest of the management team is less famous. Sure, you've probably heard of COO Sheryl Sandberg. But do you know the difference between the jobs held by Facebook's top ad execs, Carolyn Everson, David Fisher and Gokul Rajaram?” (Edwards, 2012)
A strong organizational structure has permitted Facebook to develop and stay strong in a competitive marketplace where the manufactured goods are your private life on display for the whole world to see. Facebook has a system where the user has friends who see their posts. These users can post on their friends timeline as well

It may sound crazy or silly to some but Facebook started as a small social media website that has grown into the number one social media website around the world. At a fast growing rate Myspace was a simple luxury for people to use to connect and download music say Wikipedia, 2013, and they (Myspace) were making no money. It was about six month after Myspace launched that Facebook entered the social media world gave Myspace some major competition. Even though Facebook is nothing but a social media site that is used by millions of people all over the world it has become one of the best advertising organizations out there. Facebook was setup to allow for people to just communicate with one another over the internet and to keep in contact with people that you do not see that often. As things progressed Facebook has become one of the most well-known social media websites out today. Without proper organizational skills then Facebook would not be able to allow all of the advertising spots that they do and would not be as well known to businesses as they are now. Facebook developed over time to become the top advertising businesses out in the world today and awhile back MySpace used to be one of Facebook’s competitors but with the lack of interaction from businesses Facebook eventually took over having more and more to offer. MySpace was setup to do the same as Facebook but Myspace did nothing but allow people to stay in contact with one another and was mainly friendly with people only which brought them no money and a major lack of businesses appeal.
