...Smart Goals Essay Vanessa Goins Grand Canyon University MGT-605 (MGT-605-0103) Leadership Professor Andree Swanson March 21, 2013 Out of the three goals, (Personal, educational, and professional) I chose two of the goals that I am focusing on and that is my personal and educational goals. For my personal goals, I want to create a big picture of what I plan to do in life. Then I want to break them down in order to reach my goals, then once I have them together, then I would start working on them to achieve them. For example(Specific and Measurable goals), I plan on finding a job that has great benefits and the best rate of pay, and one that does not require working on weekends(Monday-Friday only), and not working overtime. Another personal goal is developing time management and communication skills. My current skill level from those two goals needs work in order for me to be successful. I am currently unemployed right now so I believe the skills required and what would represent my greatest challenge now and if I were an employee would be focusing on Effectiveness of time management skill would be to work on always doing things on time like my homework assignments and duties at home. I would always be arriving in time at the workplace, getting a sense of achievement and increasing my energy levels. I will learn to control my time so that I will have more time to think about myself and the organization. Communicating will help me lead to effective communication with...

...SMART Goals and Self Leadership Goals Thomas B. Joyce II Grand Canyon University: MGT-605 February 12th, 2013 As I get older and talk with more highly motived individuals, one thing I can recognize is they all have goals in life. Ken Blanchard stated, “All great performance starts with the setting of goals (GCU, 2013). With that being said, I thought deeper into what I wanted out of life, and what I needed to do to achieve this. In addition, I am now able to apply my knowledge of SMART goals, and identify my developmental level with each goal to reveal my motivation and competence (Blanchard, 2010). Applying this I am going to first explore my personal goal of spending more quality time with my eight year old daughter, discuss my educational goal of earning a 4.0 GPA in my graduate program, and my professional goal of becoming a University Development Manager for my company. As a single father, I’m continually noticing my quality time diminishing with my 8 year old daughter. Between my job that needs my attention in the day and night, being in Graduate school, cooking, cleaning, and helping her with her homework, I’m finding that there are not enough hours in the day to spend time with her on a personal level. I used to spend approximately 15 quality hours a week with her. Now I’m lucky to get 4 hours in a weeks’ time. She’s still a straight “A” student, but I can tell she is wanting more time with her daddy, and it hurts me not to have enough time to give...

...Scott Wilson 08/08/2015 MGT 605 Professor Carrie Noah HW 1A Going Public with Your Reasoning It is thought that a lot of topics these days are very upsetting or just down right frustrating. But, one still sticks in my mind, and that is “Why is the media allowed to be on the front lines in combat?” From personal experience of being in combat, it was very upsetting to see the media, and them already knowing what our missions are going to be, and where we are going. They were able to even know before us soldiers even knew because for some God awful reason, they were allowed to be in on the briefing given by our top leaders. What the media personnel would do with that information would go onto frustrate us military personnel even more; they’d air it on our tactics or locations on the news for the whole world to hear; even our enemies. The reason I take this personally is because one day that we were on a mission, and we were under attack, there was the media recording the whole thing, even when my team was hit by an IED; there they were recording our every move. This would even go back to the Vietnam War, when our troops were getting ready to clear out the field, and go back to the green zone, there were the media coming off of choppers, asking stupid questions like, “How many people did you kill”, or “How can you be killing these innocent children?” Not even asking if these soldiers were even alright or did they need...

...Running head: Emotional Intelligence Emotional Intelligence Grand Canyon University: MGT 605 March 26, 2012 Emotional Intelligence Emotional intelligence is the ability to control asses, and identify emotions of oneself or of a group. Some researchers suggest that emotional intelligence can be learned and strengthened, while other claim it is an inborn characteristic. (Cherry, 2012) I am one of those individuals who do believe that one does have the capability to grow and strengthen their emotional intelligence. As an individual matures just by mere life experiences be it family life or their interactions at work they can become better at handling situations by the frequency and patterns they experience on a day to day basis. After taking the emotional intelligence quiz the results came back stating that I had scored above average. After thinking back on some of the questions asked I can see why I did score better on the test then I would have expected. As an individual I have put forth more effort to pay much closer attention to people to understand how they are feeling and to myself as to how I react in situations. By being more cognizant of my reactions it has helped improve my relations with friends and co-workers tremendously. Sometimes you just have to realize that not everyone is going to be emotionally able to adapt to certain scenarios and by being the one that can help diffuse or relate to where someone is coming from can tremendously...

...Emotional Intelligence Jok Mabior Grand Canyon University: Mgt 605 October 30, 20013 Emotional Intelligence I after taking emotional intelligence quiz, I have learned a lot about my emotional intelligence descriptors such as, self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Given the results in those areas, I have a lot of work to do in term of emotional intelligence. I have scored 7/10 in self-awareness, social awareness, relationship management, and 5/10 in self-management. For me to know where I stand in these areas of emotional intelligence is very important, not only I can see my limitations clearly, but it will help me in finding the most appropriate ways to address my weaknesses. Having a high emotional intelligence would enhance my communication skills and be able to manage effectively. “the ability to perceive accurately, appraise, and express emotion; the ability to access and/or generate feelings when they facilitate thought; the ability to understand emotion and emotional knowledge; and the ability to regulate emotions to promote emotional and intellectual growth”, (as cited in Law, K.S., Wong, C., & Song, L. J. 2004, p. 2). Our life is full of stressful moments, and learning how to solve conflicts in a calm and self-confident manner will help me greatly as a manager. Knowing myself will help me to identify my own behaviors and how these behaviors affect others. “Much of what people do in every life, therefore, is to assert...

...MGT 605 Assignment 03 How effective was Ko in defining and framing a vision for Motorola Penang? In what ways were her efforts similar to and different from the example of Charles Schwab citied earlier? How did Ko resolve the dilemma of where visions come from? Where did she find her vision? S. K. Ko had a very aggressive and challenging vision for Motorola Penang. She struggled with the most effective way of making that vision a reality. Ideal vision is something that inspires and directs people. There is always a tension for a leader when it comes to giving and receiving a vision. She engaged many of her top team in discussions about the challenges of the future of the facility. She had many specific and concrete ideas but didn’t want to seem to be imposing them on the group. She wanted to get most involvement possible to ensure all relevant information was considered that would be tasked with making the vision a reality. Ko’s philosophy reflects a positive, familial, celebrate every accomplishment kind of work environment. She saw technology as a two sided coin that would eliminate low skill job at the same time that it brought new opportunities. She was committed to rapidly moving Motorola Penang to produce more complex systems products, creating an increased demand for technicians and engineers and potentially less demand for unskilled operators. Besides Charles Schawb anticipated a need in the middle class. His vision led him the unique path. It took his organization...

...Organizational Structure Michael Thompson Grand Canyon University: MGT - 605 April 23, 2014 Organizational Structure Key components of organization’s survival and success are leadership and communication. Most of the organizations that merge, restructure, or fail are primarily due to lack of leadership and communication. Hax, A. & Majluf, N. (1981, p. 445), described several common symptoms that leads to organizational structure inadequacy. Couple of common symptoms is: 1) Failure to integrate mechanisms due to lack of coordination among divisions, and 2) Repetitive and excessive duplication of process between different units of organization due to lack of clarity and defined roles (Hax and Majluf, 1981, p. 445). Two common variables that consistently contribute to inadequate organizational structure mentioned by Hax & Majluf (1981, p.445) are leadership and communication. Leadership provides vision and direction for the organization, whereas, communication helps to define divisional and employee roles and functions, minimize ambiguity, and potential conflicts. Blanchard, K. (2010) states that it is leadership’s responsibility to provide and define the direction of the organization and communicate division’s roles and responsibilities. Furthermore, by providing direction, divisions are able to work efficiently through mutual coordination and collaborative efforts to reduce duplication of processes...

...Leadership Point of View MGT-605 6.4.2013 Leadership Point of View Growing up I had a few key people who helped shaped who I am today. The first was my mother. Her kind and loving spirit showed me that a gentle spirit is conducive to a serving attitude and living God’s kingdom here on earth. A servant attitude is imperative to becoming a strong leader. The second key influencer in my life was my youth pastor Ryan. He was always there for me during my first 2 years of high school. If I ever needed someone to talk to or to hang out with he was always available. He led our youth group by being relatable. He showed me how to lead through relationships. If you can affect a person’s life by showing them your own, your ability to lead them increases dramatically. I have proven this concept to be successful through building relationships at church camps throughout the years. I have been able to effectively lead youth by building relationships with them first before trying to lead them. I grew up with a younger brother and sister. Their age difference is only 1.5 years which puts them relatively at the same maturity level growing up. They fought constantly, always bickering with each other and causing my parents’ parenting job to become increasingly stressful. I saw this situation as an opportunity to lead my brother and sister so that my parents could alleviate some of their stress. I learned how to create peace between two conflicting entities and found ways to make sure both...

...SMART Goals Organization and Leadership MGT - 605 May 28, 2014 SMART Goals A person needs motivation to achieve goals. It is a desire from within us that needs to be satisfied. Maslow (1943) stated that people are motivated to achieve certain needs. When one need is fulfilled a person seeks to fulfill the next one. Attaining goals is gratifying to our souls. Motivation is power that keeps us trying one more time, when everything around us says give up. It is the driving force for all types of success. Personal Goal One of my personal goals is to slow down the process of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) in my health. I have a very strong family history and background of DM. Diabetes is a disease in which a person has a high blood sugar. Diabetes is due to pancreas not producing enough insulin or the body does not respond properly to the insulin produced. Controlling the progression of diabetes in my health will prolong my life expectancy. Prevention involves modification in diet, physical exercise, and avoiding the use of tobacco or smoking. A yearly physical examination and regular monitoring of blood sugar as well as laboratory work for diagnosis of diabetes are routinely done by my primary doctor. All these measures aid me in regulating my blood sugar and achieving my goal to delay the progression of diabetes in my system and prolonging my lifespan. My only challenge that I face for not reaching my goal is when my motivation fades and declines because of changes in my attitudes...

...Submitted to, Adjunct Professor Stanley Stain Course Instructor MGT 605: Organizational Management and Leadership Week One Homework Assignment 1A Topic : Going Public with your Reasoning Submitted by: Ariful Haque Shovon ID: 023433821 Going Public With Your Reasoning Question 1: Think of a topic or issue or situation that you find very upsetting or frustrating. Do a little “ranting” on that issue. That is, write some very strong and emotional statements about this issue or situation. You might begin with “One thing that makes me furious is __________.” Try to write four or five sentences. One thing which makes me furious is the amount of double standards that you have to see nowadays. Originality has become a rare quality to be seen amongst people. I believe when we were young about 7-8 years old, we used to be so original in that age. We stood up for what we wanted, what we did not like and those who would commit any sort of wrongdoing. However, as I have grown, I have realized people around me become double standard. Actions speak louder than words, what’s worse than silence are the ones speak the wise words but do not act like it. People are busier creating an image for themselves with words, but not actions. Along with time, voice has grown louder, but we can only find a few people doing wise with their actions. Those we see are acting rightly as they speak, usually they have a motive behind it. Large institutions are campaigning for a better environment...
