...Returning to School Alicia M. McGee ENG121: English Composition I (ABC1201G) Instructor: Allorah Wyman January 24, 2012 Returning to School There are so many reasons on why I returned to school that I don’t even know where to being. Or could it be the fact that I had a hard time when it came to graduating from high school and maybe I’m here to prove my family wrong. Maybe it my kids and wanting a better life for them then I had for myself. Or it could be the fact that I just want to be here. There are many reasons why I should be here. Returning to school was something that took a while for me to decide to do. Mainly because I said that after all I went through to leave high school that I wasn’t going back to school. I had to do night school, summer school, American school that’s where they mail you the work and you mail it back. And even went back to do a half semester the following year. So once I went through all that I said I was done with school. I was happy I did it, but it was all just a little much to be going through for a simple piece of paper. But after years of doing nothing and having a child I knew that I wanted to be something if not for me for her. Growing up I was looking for a role model and for some reason I just couldn’t find it. And then it felt like no time ever seem to be the right time and there was always a reason to put it off until the next time. Then having another child just made me come up with every other reason why I should do it...

...School Days School Days When looking over my life as a child, I wanted to reflect on my childhood and teenage years. I grew up without both of my parents, therefore this was the most important part of my life. The reason these two experiences meant so much to me, because my sister made the decision to raise me. I can reflect back on these two situations that made me the woman I am today. I didn’t allow my life to stop me from receiving my education. My sister was my role model that I looked up too. Even though, my sister is no longer here I am still striving to achieve my education. I learned at an early age the importance of an education. My goal is to instill in my daughter the importance of an education. Microsystem My support came from my sister and this allowed me to go beyond the crying. I can remember in elementary school, I would cry all the time, because I didn’t like going. As a child growing up school was one of my less favorite places. I was a spoiled child by my father, therefore the only person I wanted to be with was him. I did not understand how important school was back then. It was so hard for me to adjust to other children at my school. I did not think about how staying home would affect my learning. Of course, my father tried to persuade me to go to school, but it still took time for me to realize how important getting my education. My father brought me hamburgers and all the food I love eating. One day when I got home from school, my...

...signify the beginning of the end of one’s high school career and transition into college life/ adulthood. When I thought about what to put on my class ring I thought about what meant the most to me in high school. I also thought about classes and groups of interest that helped me get to where I was at that point in school. When it was my turn to create my ring I chose three main things that meant the most to me; the first being the cross in the center of my stone. Believing in God helped me make it through school. When I was transitioning from junior high to high school I felt scared because I did not know what to expect. Coming from a small school into a huge high school was very over whelming I had not been in a school with so many people; I didn’t know and I did not know how to open a locker. Mid-way into my junior year my Grandpa was diagnosed with cancer and my grades began to drop tremendously. I ended up failing chemistry and had to take it again in credit recovery. By the grace of God, I passed chemistry with a C. Unfortunately my Grandpa lost his battle with cancer and passed away two months into my senior year. It took a lot of faith and a lot of prayer just to get me though the rest of my senior year. I just thank God that with him, I pulled though it all and I graduated. The second thing I chose is a symbol for friendship. I didn’t think I would have ever met so many people my age from my community if I had...

...The Withdrawal Military School, those words send chills down my spine. I often wondered what I did to deserve such a punishment, but then again I guess I should have seen it coming. In Nigeria, my country, it is impossible for a person to hold an office in the government without having served in the military. My father, who is presently in the government, wanted me to follow in his footsteps. It was my dream at that time, to go into the government like my dad but I never fully realized what I would have to pass through in order to fulfill my goal. My father wanted to send me to military school when I became of age; he wanted me to get an early taste of life in the military as he felt it would be to my advantage as opposed to direct enrollment in the military, like he did. But as a father, he was wary and apprehensive. Unknowingly, I made his job a lot easier with my unruly behavior in my middle school. I was very ill mannered and I had violent tendencies. The straw that broke the camel's back was when I got into a fight at school and severely beat my opponent to a bloody pulp. That was the day my father made up his mind to send me to a military school at the start of the next school year. In my first year of high school I ended up in military school. All my friends went to regular high schools but I had an entirely different life ahead of me. It was absolutely terrifying. In my new school, they were very particular about academics but they didn’t stop there. They broke you...

Instead I chose to go to a prep school, not because I was a bad kid or did not love my family. But I can't forget going to school in the city and the experiences that i’ve had. These two experiences have made me who I am and still help me to this day. ...was a little girl, my parents gave me all the things I need to make me have the mentally that we weren’t poor. Choices around me weren’t for me to say. I was too young to make decisions for myself. And some I just had no choice but to accept. I didn’t have an issue listening to my parents because I enjoy having things handed to me and besides I was too clueless to know what the right decisions were. Being young was the greatest time of my life. Everyday my mom would pick out my outfits before I sleep and after I wake up. Food was made and I was ready to eat. There was no such thing as chores until I got to the age of 10. I couldn’t be 5 for the rest of my life, and time made me know what I didn’t want to understand. Unfortunately, I was bullied but it wasn’t physically. I was made fun of because of my appearance and my race, which was what I had to accept. The boys in my class would constantly say how I’m tomboy and how I look nothing like a girl. I couldn’t stand how they would make fun of my day by day, so I took action. At the age of 14 was when I started to curse. I decided let them bully me and not rebel back; they would think I’m weak. I couldn’t take this and I knew it wasn’t the right thing to do. I was aggressive with my words and tackle their weak areas. I had to forcefully do what did from being hurt menially. The next thing was race, which was the hardest part to accept. Just because I was Asian, kids from outside the school would call me “Chink” or they would...

...from birth. As a child my mind wondered many things. How did parents become parents? Did children stay young forever? Can you think back when you where a child and all the questions that you asked your parents? Some of adults today may say that your child is a reflection of you when you where younger. Everything we did growing can be related to our thought process now. The decisions we made during the times when we understood also has a reflection of the person you are today. I was very young when I started pre-school. The school was made for little children so that you could start to learn the basic fundamental. Sharing, coloring, and learning the alphabetic symbols with other kids to seemed fun. I didn’t understand that I was also learning to tight my shoes along with other fundamentals that made the school fun. My sister and first cousin also attended the school with me. Whenever we all were together we had so much fun. Sometimes I think about those days such as right now. Entering my first grade seemed a little strange to me. I attended a catholic school which had mass on certain days? This church was different from the Baptist church I regularly attended on Sundays. I didn’t understand the reason why other kids did not have churches in schools either. However once I graduated to the second grade my mother transferred my to a public school that was closer to our apartment. Riley Elementary School was the first public school I had ever experienced...

...entertained” My interview with my father taught me so many things that I think I could use for my teaching career. The interview showed me insight into how education has evolved over the years. This showed me how to treat teaching. I found that my dad is a lot like me. I like to make relationships with my teachers, and my dad did that in school. My dad went to South Weymouth Public Schools in South Weymouth, MA. He grew up in a Christian home where everything they had and still have is Jesus-related. There are pictures of Jesus and verses from the Bible. Both of them are avid church-goers, involved in the church worship team on Keyboard and Drums. I used to regularly attend their church in Brockton of about 2 years. It was one of the most exciting times of my life. Anyway, during my dad’s time in school, he explained that he made platonic relationships with his teachers, which I have realized is key for one to learn in a classroom setting. Here is that interview: Q#1: Describe your school experiences. Were they positive, negative, neutral, etc.? “My school experiences were pretty good. As far as positive, in fifth grade, I used to go down to the principal’s office and play chess during our open time. As far as negative, I was picked on in school and got in fights.” Q#2: How did your school experiences prepare you to become a productive citizen? “It helped me get along with some folks and try to resolve conflicts.” Q#3How were you treated during your school experiences...
