Michael Shermer's The Moral Arc

Michael Shermer is an intelligent, thoughtful, and well spoken orator. He begins with the discussion about his book The Moral Arc. The Moral Arc was named after Martin Luther King at his march from Selma to Montgomery. Michael Shermer renounces one of Theodore Parker’s quotes, “I do not pretend to understand the moral universe; the arc is a long one, my eye reaches but little ways; I cannot calculate the curve and complete the figure by the experience of sight; I can divine by conscience. And from what I see I am sure it bends towards justice”. Justice is what you make of it, five months after this quote was said, the Votings Rights Act was passed in 1965 in which it allowed every gender, every race, and who are a US citizen to vote. Shermer uses graphs, historical events and figures to back up his ideas. Shermer illustrates major historical events that have impacted in the past years that have impacted us now. In reference to the Voting Rights Act, we wouldn't be allowed to vote if Martin Luther King hadn't made it possible. Shermer also informs us of people's belief, and he does this by talking about homosexuals, and heterosexuals. In reference to religions, many religions may not allow someone to be homosexual because they may believe that it is a sin and it’s wrong. However, many people may think that iking the same sex is a sin, and many people also have no problem with it simply because it doesn't affect them. The twenty first century is getting better at respecting people and their sexuality, but we still need to work on it a bit.
