The Michaux State Forest is debating adding a shooting range section to the forest. It is next to Caledonia State Park which is where the local residents get their water supply from. As park manager at Caledonia I am in support of the shooting because it provides some health benefits, proper rules are in place and no environmental effects. First, a shooting range can have health benefits to those who use it. It gets people outside instead of just playing a virtual shooting game as well as improving fine motor skills such as hand eye coordination. Another benefit is increasing your ability to focus. Shooting takes a lot of concentration on hitting a target and learning how to drown out outside noises, which is a good skill to have in your everyday. On a personality level, it increases a person's confidence and courage because not only do they no longer fear guns, but the have the potential to become experts in using them. The more comfortable they get with a gun, the less the are afraid of it and therefore become a better, more accurate shooter which then boosts their confidence. Also, shooting guns causes a release of adrenaline which provides you with more energy. That energy in return makes you more awake and alert.(“Going to a Shooting Range”). …show more content…
Anyone who uses the range must register and buy a permit and can only use the range during certain hours. Along with that, only those who have a gun permit or a hunting licence are permitted to get a permit. Children under the age of 15 must be supervised by an adult and no children under the age of 10 are permitted. A ranger must be present if there are more than 3 shooters present and they have a limit on how many live rounds can be in the firearm at one time (3 rounds for rifle).
