...WEEK 1 DISCUSSION QUESTION 1-3 DQ1: What are some ways in which receivers of messages provide feedback when listening to or reading a message? What effect does this have on the message? Provide examples Receivers of message provides feedback through body language, eye contract, facial expression or verbal acknowledgment. This effects the sender and the message by either having a positive or negative effect and or determines either a favorable or negative respones, depending on the feedback given by the receiver on the content of the message which might effect the context of the message. For example, if a person rolls their eyes, it can be they are disinterested, dissatisfied or simply aren't listening to the sender. This has a negative effect on the message because it will likely get lost in translation. DQ2: Which step in the communication process do you consider to be the most important? Why do you think this? Which of these steps is the most uncomfortable for you? Why is this? How might you work to change this? I believe the most important step in the communication process is the MESSAGE. The message comprised of ideas, thoughts, feelings, or opinions to be communicated. Sometimes it can be short and concise or as complex as quantum physics. It all depends on what is needed to get across to the receiver and how it interpreted it. ENCODING would be uncomfortable/difficult part. It is uncomfortable/difficult because in my line of work I deal with new and inexperience...

...CountryWide Ban Needed In today's modern society, almost everyone owns a cell phone. Although the use of a cell phone may be a convenient way of communicating, they should not be used while operating an automobile. Cell phone use while driving has dramatically increased over the past years in the U.S., and studies show that the risk of having an accident significantly increases when a person is talking or texting on their phone. Due to this increased risk, I believe Florida, as well as the other forty-nine states, should ban cell phone use while driving. Using a cell phone while trying to drive is not only a major distraction, it can be extremely dangerous or even fatal. In a recent study done by Strayer and Johnson, they found that "cell phone conversations made drivers more likely to miss traffic signals and react more slowly to the signals that they did detect" (Strayer and Drews 128). The awareness of one's surroundings is vital in safe operation of an automobile. When a driver "disrupts performance by diverting attention from the external environment associated with the driving task to an engaging context associated with the cell phone conversation" (Strayer and Drews 129). The U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that the use of cell phones while driving is the number one cause of driving distraction leading to car crashes and accidents (Cramer, Mayer, and Ryan 181). Although many people believe...

GoMobile software will allow customers to receive important messages on all Smartphone’s including RIM, Palm, Android, Windows, iPhone, and Android devices. GoMobile’s values and intentions are in the improved efficiency of an enterprises communication and the enlarged manageability of numerous devices and the communication applications linked to these mobile devices. GoMobile’s software will concentrate on the necessity of enterprise employees to be in constant contact with their communication applications, even when they are not in the office building or even when the employee is away on vacation. GoMobile supplies users with an integrated access to their email, voicemail and other messaging applications on their mobile device. GoMobile’s contribution is mainly needed by an IT department that is required to sustain numerous devices while having the equivalent access to email, voice mail and instant message notifications. For example, Palm, Windows, Android, iPhone, and RIM devices operate on completely distinct configurations and work in different ways with major email packages like Microsoft Outlook and Lotus Notes. Without GoMobile, different devices and email packages need an IT Department to configure distinct software solution for each brand of device. Now GoMobile will be the universal platform connecting the user’s communication applications (email, voice mail, messaging) and the major mobile devices (Palm,...

...Psychological and Sociological Effects of Cell Phones Sean Myers Psychological and Sociological Effects of Cell Phones According the U.S Census Bureau in 2011, more than 70% of people in the world use mobile phones. The use of phones can be negative and positive. Mobile phones have been used for terrorist attacks and also used for donation campaigns. Mobile phones was created for a purpose, but has turned into something entirely different. Though it is a tool, it carries a psychological and sociological impact on society. Mobile phones have changed the meaning of multitasking in our personal and business life. You can conduct a three-way business call while cooking dinner. You can stay in constant contact with all your friends and family no matter where you are or what time it is. You can now monitor your children by use of GPS. These are certainly some positive impacts of the technology. The mobile device soon turned into a multipurpose device with the birth of the smartphones. Adults now even spend more media time on mobile than newspapers and magazines combined (TV, Mobile See Gains in Viewing Time, 2011). But like most technologies, this tool also comes with some drawbacks that may not be immediately obvious….This new enhanced smartphone is an invisible leash maybe even a bind on our personal space. A balance is needed to keep a healthy state of mind from busy human interaction and personal space. Having a mobile phone on you at all times gives away that...

...Eyes On The Road Is it possible to read a book and drive at the same time? Absolutely not, so why should we think it is ok to use our cell phones and drive at the same time. When drivers decide to send or receive text message on their cell phones, while driving they are putting their life and another person life in jeopardy. This issue is now a national problem and one source has claimed 1.6 million accidents a year, results of 6,000 deaths and a half million injuries (The Department of Transportation). The one thing that all drivers should consider is “ vision.” The use of cell phones while operating a vehicle can cause accidents, fatalities, and road rage. Initially, more and more accidents are occurring, since all kinds of drivers are now using their cell phones to text message, dial phone number and checking their e-mails, while they are driving on the road. Vehicle manufacturers are making the vehicles equipped with a Bluetooth hands free device, so drivers would be more attentive when they are driving on the road. However, another source showed drivers making a phone call were four times as likely to cause an accident as other drivers; hands-free devices were not significantly safer; if you text and drive, it's twice as risky as just talking on the phone (“PBS NewsHour”). Furthermore, the only way to assure safety and a decline in statics is to stop using the cell phone while driving So far, cellular phones and road rage are a bad combination and In today’s society...

...Graduation was in 2003 for my school year and was happy to be out and explore the world. Getting home after graduation I sat down at the computer and checked my email. I could not believe was I was reading about a mobile phone with a camera. I could never imagine that a mobile phone could have a camera. I had a 35mm camera and was just so amazed at how good of a picture came out of that camera. I had never had a cell phone only my older brother and sister had mobile phones. I played with their phones all the time and was just so amazed at how many games it had. The games totaled 5 and was like whoa just blew my mind. I had my camera phone for about three years and was taking pictures at every event until my memory was full and could take no more. I had uploaded my pictures to my computer and then I was off again taking more pictures. I had a decent job and was making little money and had saved up enough money to buy me a RIM Blackberry smart phone which was another whole level from the phone I had. I could sync my email, play games ten times better than on my previous phone. It had a full qwerty keyboard and I was a typing machine and was texting people so fast it wasn’t even funny. I had my RIM Blackberry for about 1 year when I heard news that Google had acquired Android and was going to develop a Google mobile phone. I could not believe what I was reading on Google news, I always follow the RSS feeds from Google News...

...215 Professor Erica Ellsworth 18 May, 2012 Driven to Distraction by Cell Phones Countless numbers of people are dying every day. These deaths are not limited to certain areas but are occurring nationally. They are pointless deaths because something could be done to prevent it from happening. Imagine if stopping one simple act could save countless lives. That simple act would be to stop being distracted by our cell phones when driving. Are we still willing to listen or do we discount or tune out the speaker and continue on about our business? The fact is that all states should have standardized laws banning cell phone use while driving because talking, texting, and reading texts distract drivers and lead to accidents and death. A brief history of the cell phone shows that “between 1998 and 2001, more than 100 million cell phones were sold. By the end of the 90's, more than 70 million users existed. At the end of 2000, there were over 100 million subscribers, so the 2000’s are the decade that cell phones became common” (Strayer and Cooper, 2009). It is also the decade that lives started to be lost due to cell phone use while driving. Today almost everyone has a cell phone. It is hard to imagine a time when we did not have cell phones available to us. Most people can barely remember having to use pay phones to make calls. Cell phones are helpful and convenient. The problem comes when people are so...

...Clivio 1 Thomas Clivio Professor Marie Salamone College Writing I October 17, 2012 Dangers of Texting With the advent of the cell phone came a new means of social media and communication called texting. But with all the benefits an emerging technology can offer, we can’t always predict what the impact will be on our society. This new form of communicating brought with it its own dialogue as well as its own dangers. We’ve seen an increase in accidents caused by distracted teen drivers who were texting, a new medium of bullying in our schools, and the newest trend that’s become popular with teens and young adults known as “sexting”. As cell phones become more popular, and the age of cell phone users gets younger and younger, so will the person who will be exposed to sexting. As our younger generation gets ever more influenced by the proliferation of sexually explicit images in the media and scantily dressed celebrities, the more difficult the job of a parent will become. How many more teens need to die from texting while driving or from committing suicide after sexting provocative images before we recognize this growing problem? With the introduction of texting to our youth and the impact it has on our society, we have been presented with a whole new set of concerns and it is clear that these concerns need to be addressed. The first forewarning of the dangers this new form of communication presented, came in the increase of distracted driver fatalities. The...

Select one side of the argument as described and provide convincing points either in favor or against the proposal that an investment in text message collection and mining should be made even if no clear positive ROI (return on investment) from better execution can be determined in advance. A healthy customer relationship plays a crucial part in the success of a business. In today's competitive marketplace, every organization wants to know whether its customers are satisfied with the company services or not and their views about the products and services. These all things can be done with a customer survey. Companies can get many benefits by surveying their customers. It is really an inexpensive way to get customer feedback which can help the company to improve customer retention, and customers' suggestion or their creative ideas can help to improve company's product or may help to launch a new product. A company can survey its customers by several ways including text messaging,web-based feedback forms, social media, e-mail messages, call center notes and receipt-based surveys. Nowadays scenario has been changed. People are always on move, you are not able to see them sitting all the time in front of the computer. But most of all the people keep their mobile with them 24 hours a day. So when the company sends its customers survey questions through text message, the text message is arrived instantaneously...

...Progress is to advance or develop toward a better, more complete or more modern condition. This world is definitely progressing and at an alarming rate too. The world is moving faster than ever in terms of technology. Every year kids are getting cell phones at a younger age. Computers continue to become smaller, smarter and faster. The iPhone has become a world renowned pocket computer. It continues to progress every day to the point where the phone becomes secondary to its many other features. We can communicate through text message at a rate that 30 years ago would have been unimaginable. Technological progress is something that continues to develop with the world. From the steamboat, to the printing press, to the first computer, technology is progress. However, it may not be the progress that this world needs. The world needs more leaders, people who can stand up for what’s right. Yet as technology progresses all we get is more gamers, social media addicts, and people over-involved in a texting conversation. Although this country seems to be making steps towards progress we continue to digress. Because of technology people are getting dumber, not smarter as a result. People no longer need to read the newspaper to find out the news, all they have to do is check their “news feed.” The world is moving alarmingly fast and all we can do is change with it. People do not realize that if we do not stop to take a look around, we are going to miss the world. The world is moving...

...Drunk driving and devising ways to prevent it have been a long standing issue in our society, and rightfully so. However, there are individuals far worse dangerous to have behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. As reported in the American Journal of Public Health, a journal dedicated to the publication of original work in research, research methods, and program evaluation in the field of public health, Dr. Fernando Wilson and Jim Stimpson, in collaboration with the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), affirm that a person that is texting while driving is 23 times more likely to be involved in a car crash than a drunk driver (2010). Between 2005 and 2008, distracted driving fatalities increased more than 28% nationwide (Stimpson & Watson, 2010). Driving while texting has become an undeniable danger as these figures support. It is for this reason, as reported in the Dallas Morning News, that Texas lawmakers recently passed a bill, 124-16, to ban texting while driving (Hoppe, 2011). This bill has now gone on to seek much needed approval from the governor, Rick Perry. With so much support coming from the Texas House, it is expected for the bill to pass. However, one must keep in mind that Governor Perry has a penchant for vetoing bills, as was evident back in 2000 when he vetoed a record 83 bills in one day (CBSDFW.com, 2011). As of right now the state of Texas currently has a no-texting policy for licensed drivers under the age of 18 and anyone driving in a school zone (Hoppe...

...rarely stop and see if I am being efficient. One of the hardest things for me to do is evaluate myself. The task of plotting out the day using planned versus actual events helped me realize how little time I actually have in a day. I was the most surprised, however, with how little the planned events differed from the actual events. I very seldom found myself needing to update or create changes in my plan. I did notice that when I sit down to work on schoolwork, I suddenly become the most popular man in the building. Between phone calls, text messages, needy kids and wife questions, I sometimes felt a little pressed for time. I have made an effort to deal with these distractions by letting everybody know how important my study time is to me. Letting the kids know that, like them, daddy now has homework as well. Also setting my cell phone to auto answer calls and to respond to texts with a “ busy doing homework. I’ll get back to you” text should really help. I also plan use headphones when I work to block out unavoidable noise distractions. This should help me feel a little more comfortable with my schoolwork part of the schedule. I think that what this project has shown me the most is that I kind of have a routine that works. My time management skills are a work in progress. For the most part, I feel like the day-to-day activities in my life are very well organized. My biggest struggle was figuring out when I was going to do schoolwork. There never really is a great time...
