...Most Common Old Testament Interpretive Mistakes According to Fee and Stuart’s description, a narrative is a story that retells historical events meant to give both direction and meaning to present life. Narratives consist of three parts, character’s, plot, and plot resolution (Fee & Stuart, 2003). Biblical narratives are different from all others in that they are divinely inspired. They are in essence, the story of God. With such lofty material it is not surprising that most people put a lot of thought and effort into reading, interpreting, and understanding these stories. It is this consorted effort that seems to get them into trouble. One of the most common issues is a matter of decontextualizing or ignoring the context in which the narrative is written. Taking passages and phrases out of context, as we see often in stories reported present day, can dull or even obliterate the meaning of what is being said all together. By doing this, the reader can use any part of the scripture to mean almost anything he or she wishes, and in turn misses out on the true meaning of the text. Selectivity, another common mistake, also plays a part in this misinterpretation. Readers pick through selecting only certain phrases or sections to concentrate on while ignoring the broad scope of the narrative. By doing this, the big picture is lost amongst the details and a larger message can be missed (Fee & Stuart, 2003). Moralizing is another one of the most common errors, and I must say one that...

...reality in some way. Some literary critics state that “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” was a “magnificent failure” because it lacked “dramatic force” (Evans, 601). Others do not believe that the story’s material action and symbolism are properly matched (Evans, 601). Oliver Evans does not agree. “‘The Snows’ is not, primarily, a story of action at all: its interest lies in the situation, and in the conflict between idealism and materialism that takes place within the protagonist” (Evans, 602). Evans discovered symbolism in almost every aspect of the story. Evans noted the despair in Harry’s life because of the conflicting views he held, and because of the deadness he felt. According to Evans, Harry was partly idealistic, as shown by his despair; however, he was also materialistic and mechanistic. Harry did not fear death; however, he hated the thought of leaving so much unaccomplished. He hated knowing that he had ruined his own life and that he could not re-claim his integrity while maintaining his materialistic lifestyle (Evans, 602). Oliver Evans also noted the symbolism of Helen, Harry’s wife. Harry made the choice to marry Helen for her money, which resulted in his moral and integral downfall because he no longer was required to exercise his morality, integrity, or talents. He did not really love his wife; their relationship was based upon a “lie”. Helen...

...Hanging of the Mouse “Hanging of the Mouse” is one of the most touching stories I have ever read. It talks about how in the old days, to teach moral lessons, they hung the prisoner(s). People would watch them publicly, and the people would enjoy them. The people saw it as a source of entertainment. They believed that by watching them, it would teach people that if you do something wrong you would be punished. Something more like a moral lesson. Bishop would not agree to this. I believe that she does not believe in public executions. Just seeing the fake mouse hanging over the chair made her feel unpleasant. Just imagining the little feet curling up when the mouse finally passed, just got to her. Actually witnessing an execution, I believe, would make her not feel like it was a moral lesson learned. It would only make her feel uncomfortable inside. “Who hangs one corrects a thousand.” I believe Bishop would not agree with this either. Again I think it makes her feel very uneasy. Also I think she believes in a fair fight. Whoever did wrong should be able to maybe get out on parole or good behavior. Sometimes when you make mistakes it may not be on purpose. Some people act on impulse. Another reason that she may not believe is because even though people have watched these executions, they still commit crimes. So this just proves that even though you are trying to show a “moral lesson” people do not take it that way. It is just like they used this source of punishment as...

...Power of Fates: An analysis of Foreknowledge in Das Nibelungenlied Among several mystical components that characterize medieval literature, foreknowledge is the feature that takes a great deal of consideration in practice. Particularly, authors have to determine all kinds of questions as to how, where and what to incorporate in foreknowledge scenes. No matter what decisions being made, they do not go far away from the text’s objectives. Similarly, the thirteenth-century Austrian text Das Nibelungenlied’s author aesthetically integrates foreknowledge into the historical story of the Burgundians in such a creative manner that facilitates its purpose of being a “profoundly moral poem” (Raffel 338). By focusing on the narrative’s two main characters, analyzing how foreknowledge effects their characterizations presents an understanding as to how this supernatural element facilitates the conveyance of moral messages. In form of Krimhild’s dream, foreknowledge appears comparatively early in the narrative. During her protected childhood, this princess has the dream that reveals a heartbreakingly metaphorical incident. On the surface, it unrelatedly displays the image of an ill-fated falcon being killed by two eagles: Living surrounded by splendor Krimhild dreamed a dream: she had a trained falcon, glorious, strong-winged, fierce, and wild, and a pair of eagles tore it apart in front of her eyes. No pain, no sorrows in all the world could be worse than what she’d seen...

...Aladdin is one of the tales in the book One Thousand and One Arabian Nights. There are several moral lessons in the story. The main moral lesson on Aladdin is that its best to be yourself. Greatness and strength comes from within, not from without. Its not whats on the outside that' count; what is important is what's on the inside. The moral of the original Middle-Eastern tale 'Arabian Nights' is that greatness and strength comes from within, not from without. This is demonstrated by Aladdin's bravery and intelligence despite his humble upbringing. In Disney's animated musical version of the story, the writers updated this theme to a single phrase, calling Aladdin a 'diamond in the rough'. There are many differences between the movie and the original tale of Aladdin, because the filmmakers believed that the original had an inappropriate moral message. And I have to agree with this for at least two reasons. First, Aladdin never tells the princess who he really is; he becomes a prince thanks to the jinni, but he never considers telling his wife about who he was before that. The original story doesn’t even mention this. Lying and pretending to be someone else is, indeed, something that should not be promoted in a children’s movie. Then, in the original story I really couldn’t stand the princess, Badr al-Budur. She is naïve, has no personality and no opinion, she does what she is told to, and never asks questions. She is so easily tricked, that she almost gets Aladdin killed...

...The Dangers of Technology Major advancements in technology, specifically dealing with health, are a dangerous thing. Whether it be augmentations, medicine, or reanimation there are serious consequences for advancing technology both on an individual, moral level and for society as a whole. When someone decides to make advancements in science it typically comes at the cost of human relationships. New technology drives people away from each other. New technology is always hotly debated in the news. In the end a society has to decide whether or not a new technology is moral or not. Advancing technology also advances power, which is the most dangerous thing of all. The novel Frankenstein and the video game Deus Ex: Human Revolution explore these dangers. Technology is a dangerous tool to society because it has the ability to destroy human relationships, it can be morally wrong, and it can allow certain groups and individuals to gain scary amounts of power. In the beginning of Frankenstein, Victor was social and communicated with his friends and family often. After Victor created the Creature, he ran into Henry who took notice of the effects of the creation on Victor. Henry said, “I did not before remark how very ill you appear; so thin and pale; you look as though you have been watching for several nights.” (Shelley 45). Victor worked tirelessly on making advancements to science and it made him sick. He did not talk or see his friends or family for a long time. The Creature is...

...Critical Thinking Scenario ETH/316 November 30, 2015 Ryan Busch The scenario that I choose was the, “To Drill or Not to Drill.” The basis of the story is based on the Rocky Mountain range and if the energy companies should be allowed to drill for gas at the expense of endangering the natural wildlife that live in the ecosystem there. The story was put together by Nightline on July nineteen, two thousand and four. * What is the moral responsibility of all participants? The moral responsibility of all the participants are to decide if it is morally right to drill for gas in a natural reserve. The government should look at what the land is set aside for, not what they can acquire form the natural reserve. The Bureau of Land Management, and the BLM Field Manager is also responsible because they are the ones that process the applications to drill. The gas companies that wish to drill are responsible for drill in a safe and way that the land and animals are not affected by the drilling. * What are the stakeholders' moral failings? The failing of the US government is that they want the energy companies to be able to drill for gas to benefit from the energy and monetary value that this will provide the country. The BLM has the failing in that they rarely deny an application to drill. “How many of those applications have you rejected? Actually, percentage wise very few but I have changed many.” (The BLM Field Manager in Pinedale, 2004). The failing of the energy...

..." TER 1 Wat Is Morality. I \\·e are discussing nd-sm~ll matter, but how we ought to live. SOCRATES, AS REPORTED BY PLATO IN THE REPUBliC (CA. 390 B.C.) 1.1. The Problem of Definition Moral philosophy is the attempt to achieve a systematic under standing of the nature of morality and what it requires of us in Socrates's words, of "how we ought to live,r and why. :It would be helpful, therefore, if we could begin with a simple, uncon !roversial defiuition of what lIJ,Qrality is. But that tums out to be impossible. There are many rival theories, each expounding a different conception of what it means to live morally, and any definition that goes beyoud Socrates's simple formulation is bound to offend one or another of them. This should make us cautious, but it need not paralyze us. In this chapter I will describe what I call the "minimum con ception" of morality. As the name suggests, the minimum con ception is a core that every moral theory should accept, at least as a starting point. We will begin by examining some recent moral controversies. The features of the minimum conception will emerge from our consideration of these examples. 1.2. ...The film tells the classic American story of an underdog triumphing over a powerful nemesis. In this case, Terry brings down Johnny Friendly and ends his corrupt reign over the union. Terry’s takedown of Friendly was possible by his agreement to testify in court about Friendly’s involvement in the death of Joey. Kazan paints Terry’s actions as a difficult decision to go against his former “friends,” but a morally sound decision. Throughout the film viewers see Terry’s inner struggle between his loyalty to his brother and the union, and his conscience and guilt for his involvement in Joey’s death. Terry’s decision to testify displayed the importance of morality and one’s conscience. That sometimes doing what is right is difficult, but it is ultimately the correct...

...official. It is what is expected of these officials to perform the highest level of integrity in their everyday work. Integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. In the Code of Conduct: Article 2: it's states, " In the performance of their duty, law enforcement officials shall respect and protect human dignity and maintain and uphold the human rights of all persons." With that being said; I can't fathom why so many law enforcement officials get away with so much brutality daily. Everyone has morals and ethics, no matter if they are good or bad, you still have them. Law enforcement officials bit only are trained to do the right things, step by step in the line of duty, but whether theory choose to follow their training is entirely up to then. Graham was in his grandmothers bathroom at her home, reportedly flushing marijuana down the toilet. Officer Richard Haste, chased Graham into the house even though the officer didn't have a warrant. Graham was unarmed when Haste shot and killed him. A grand jury charged the officer with manslaughter. However, a judge later the indictment out, which allowed Haste to get away with murder.

...Moral codes are reviewed from occasionally; however, they are of top priority for a number of causes in companies. Companies have to ensure they go after the top tier of moral principles in all of their actions. Moral principles are also significant with respect to business investigation. Throughout this paper, the discourse shall be lodged with regard to a case in which corrupt business analysis methods were executed by the company. My intent is to talk about this case and a range of main clauses concerning this particular case. Presently, in this peculiar case, some moral subjects are to be taken into reflection. In terms of immoral investigation performance, this particular company was certainly engrossed in immoral research performance. The company was a pharmaceutical corporation that worked together with a professor who beforehand supplied the required research linked to the medication of flu (Dominick & Wimmer, 2010). Throughout the course of their accord, he was inquired to remain the research information secret and not to unveil the same to any other party. The corporation which was working on his investigation work was planning to hold back the study work. Consequently, it was judged to be immoral on the side of the pharmaceutical corporation. The pharmaceutical corporation desired to make sure that it collected a high bulk of earnings, in spite of whether the investigation work was complete at the price of collective interests.
