Guidelines for Candidates
• • Candidates must submit their completed Research Study to their school authorities by April 28, 2006. Give a full title and date parameters, where appropriate, for your Research Study. This will help you to organise your answer and it will help the examiner to assess your work. The subject and the dates of the research should be clearly and concisely stated in the title. Note that examiners will not award marks for material more recent than 1993 in the case of Ireland or more recent than 1992 in the case of Europe and the wider world. The Outline Plan should define and justify the proposed subject of study, identifying the aims, intended approach and sources to be consulted. Higher level candidates should cite three sources and Ordinary level candidates should cite two sources. The Evaluation of the Sources should indicate the relevance of the sources to the subject of the study and comment on their strengths and weaknesses. The Extended Essay should relate the results of the research in the form of a historical essay and review how the research process fulfilled the Outline Plan. The review of the research process may be integral to the essay or it may be included as a separate element. A maximum of ten marks will be awarded for this review. Candidates are reminded of the recommended range of length for the Extended Essay (Higher level: 1200-1500 words; Ordinary level: 600-800 words). By adhering to the suggested essay length, candidates demonstrate their editorial skills to the examiner. For example, candidates whose writing is normally around ten words to the line, need write no more than 4-5 pages at Higher level or 2-3 pages at Ordinary level. The Report presented for assessment must be your own individual work – authenticated by yourself and by your teacher. The Report must be completed under the supervision of a teacher. If the coursework is not completed under a teacher’s supervision, she/he will not be able to validate the work as being your own individual work when requested by the State Examinations Commission to do so. In instances where a report cannot be authenticated as a candidate’s own work, the State Examinations Commission will take appropriate action. This often results in the work presented being deemed invalid and marks awarded in respect of it being discounted when determining the overall examination result. Any incidence of suspected copying, improper assistance from another party, plagiarism or procurement of work prepared by another party will be thoroughly investigated. Candidates are liable to having penalties imposed as provided for in the Rules and Programme for Secondary Schools. The penalties include loss of the subject, loss of the entire examination in all subjects, or being debarred from the Certificate Examinations in subsequent years. There may be serious consequences for any other party involved in improperly assisting a candidate, as the Education Act 1998 provides for certain criminal offences in relation to the conduct of the examinations. Teachers and the authorities of schools are familiar with the detailed requirements to ensure that practical work is valid for examination purposes. Candidates should comply fully with all requests which are made and which are designed to enable authentication of their work. Remember: responsibility for complying with the examination requirements rests with you, the candidate. If the requirements are not followed, your teacher and the school authority will have no choice but to bring this to the attention of the State Examinations Commission.

Mrs. Tess Hutchinson stands out right from the start: she arrives at the lottery late. She explains to Mr. Summers that she was doing her dishes and forgot what day it was. The town treats her lateness lightly, but several people comment on it, “in voices just loud enough to be heard across the crowd, ‘Here comes your Missus, Hutchinson,’ and ‘ Bill, she made it after all.’” (Jackson 501). It is ironic that she is the one who wins the lottery, and is fated to be stoned. So Tess Hutchinson has already been noticed by people as one who is not entirely part of the group. Before the drawing she is friendly with the other women, pretending to be pleased to be present. The very moment that she sees is her family that draws the black dot, though, her egotism is evident. “You didn’t give him time enough to take any paper he wanted. I saw you. It wasn’t fair!” (Jackson 504). She continues to scream about the unfairness of the ritual up until her stoning. Mrs. Hutchinson knew the lottery was wrong, but she never did anything about it. She pretends as much as she could to enjoy it, when she truly hated it all along. Maybe Jackson is suggesting that the more hypocritical one is, the more of a target they are. We have appointment times, SP times, formation times and many other start times that dictate we will be there. If a Convoy has an SP time of fifteen hundred hours and the Soldiers decide to show up late because they did not feel like getting ready on time people could die. If they rolled out on time, they may have avoided the ambush or avoided the Vbid that hit them in the bottleneck. It sounds extreme but time management plays a critical role in the Army. When you make an appointment that spot has been reserved for you. That means if you have been given the last slot someone else is going to have to wait for another one to open up. This could be one day or one month. And because you missed it someone else is still going to have to wait when they could have had that spot and been there. If you are going to miss the appointment or cannot make it due to mission they do allow us to cancel the appointment with in twenty four hours. The Army allows us to make appointments for whatever we need. Be it for a medical appointment, house goods, CIF, Smoking Sensation or whatever we need these recourses are available to us.
