...As seen in Brer Rabbit’s character throughout Uncle Remus’ tales, the trickster is a small and weak animal, similar to the position blacks were in before the Civil War. However, the tricksters are always able to escape from larger animals, their oppressors, by outwitting them. For instance, in the short story “How Mr. Rabbit Was Too Sharp for Mr. Fox,” Brer Rabbit uses his cunning to trick Brer Fox, pleading, “skin me, snatch out my eyeballs, tear out my years by de roots, en cut off my legs, but do please, Brer Fox, don’t fling me in dat brier-patch” (Harris). Brer Fox cannot help himself but go against his plea and does just that. Yet, that was just as Brer Rabbit wanted, for in reality he was “bred en bawn in a brier-patch,” and was able to escape and outsmart his oppressor (Harris). These little folk tales are significant because they were based off of the...

...WRITING 101S, KADENA AFB 500 Hedgehog or Fox? Intellectual or the Artistic? Which is better? Fruitful Questions by James Sollisch emphasizes the importance of looking at things and problems more than one way in order to come up with a solution. This essay reminds me of a fable by Isiah Berlin told to me by an old professor of mine. In this fable the fox is a cunning creature, able to devise a myriad of complex strategies for sneak attacks upon the hedgehog. Day in and day out, the fox circles around the hedgehog’s den, waiting for the perfect moment to pounce. Fast, sleek, beautiful, and crafty—the fox looks like the sure winner. The hedgehog, on the other hand, is a dowdier creature, looking like a genetic mix-up between a porcupine and a small armadillo. He waddles along, going about his simple day, searching for lunch and taking care of his home. The fox waits in silence at the juncture in the trail. The hedgehog, minding his own business, wanders right into the path of the fox. The fox thinks he has the sure advantage now. He leaps out, bounding across the ground, lightning fast. The little hedgehog, sensing danger, looks up and thinks, “Here we go again. Will he ever learn?” Rolling up into a perfect little ball, the hedgehog becomes a sphere of sharp spikes, pointing outward in all directions. The fox, bounding toward his prey, sees the hedgehog defense and calls off the attack. Retreating back to the forest, the fox begins to calculate a new line of attack. Each...

...Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) Marissa N. Webb Biology 101 American Military University Mr. Daniel Pettus Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is the largest of the true foxes. “True foxes” is a nickname for the genus Vulpes. Red foxes are the most geographically spread member of the Carnivora. Red foxes live all around the world in many different diverse habitats including forests, grasslands, mountains, and deserts. They are located across the entire Northern Hemisphere from the Arctic Circle to North Africa, Central America and Asia. I currently live in Virginia Beach, Virginia and red foxes are located throughout the local area. The red fox is found in all areas of Virginia except for the extreme southeast corner. It prefers diverse habitat, in less populated areas, like farmland. You can distinguish a red fox from other similar animals by the following physical characteristics: they are the size of a small dog, a total of 39-41 inches and a weight of 9-12 pounds. They have prominent, erect ears, a pointed nose, and a long, bushy tail with white tip. Their fur is long and soft, with the upper part reddish-yellow, black-tipped on the shoulders. Red foxes are omnivorous. Most of their diet consists of rabbits and mice. They are also known to eat poultry, squirrels, muskrats, quail, small nongame birds, insects, nuts and fruits in smaller amounts. The life cycle of the red fox is as follows: young foxes must...

...deliver him to Atticus without being seen. That’s when a frightening thought hit me. Will I be charged with murder? No way, I thought. I was just protecting Scout and Jem. What if this story gets written in the paper? I can’t have my name in the paper. Maybe, I thought Atticus or the sheriff could help me. I carried Jem all the way into to the Finch’s house and set him where Mr. Finch told me to. The Finch’s house was the most beautiful house I had ever seen. Although I had not seen a ton of houses in my lifetime, I had seen some when I was little, but not any that seemed to be as elaborate as the Finch’s. Certainly, I thought, the Finch’s must be rich. I set Jem down in his bed and stood in the corner nervously. I watched as Mrs. Alexandra came in and examined Jem. I watched as Scout came back from out in the lot. She was worried that Jem might be dead. I was the most worried though. No longer for Jem or Scout because they were alright, but now I was worried for my anonymity. I did not want to have to do an interview for the paper about what happened; I didn’t even want people to know that I killed Mr. Ewell. If people found out, they might start new rumors about me saying, “That terrible Radley came out of his house for once and all he did was kill a man.” I needed someone to protect me, to say that I didn’t do it, that I never left my house and all was normal at the Radley residence....

...Earlier this year I decided it was time to get my dog, Ninja, a playmate. Ninja is my mutt that I had gotten from the Humane Society a few years ago; however, I decided I wanted to try something different. I have never had a purebred dog, and I have been wanting a certain one in particular for quite some time. The thought of having a dachshund running around in my house filled me with pure joy. Dachshund had always caught my attention when it came to deciding what pet I wanted. Their irregular shaped bodies, or as Henry Mencken would say, “Dachshunds: A half-a-dog high, and a dog-and-a-half long,” made me fall in love with them even more. Since I have had Buster, I have never really taken to the time to learn where they originated or what his breed was used for. The only knowledge I have of dachshunds are what they look like, their coat and color varieties, the different sizes, and the common health issues associated with them. Though, I guess now I do not really have an excuse as to why I cannot get to know more about my little Buster. The dachshund can be found in historical accounts dating back to the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, when illustrations reflected badgers being hunted with dogs with elongated bodies, short legs and hound-type ears. The dogs of medieval Europe were noted to have the tracking ability of hounds and the proportions and temperament of terriers, much needed to pursue their main quarry of badgers. Dachshund is the German name for “badger dog.” The...

...A Fox’s Tale (Tail) One day a fox was out on a walk, following the same trail that she had once followed when she was just a pup. While walking through the dense woods, it became more and more difficult for her to see where she was stepping. All of a sudden she heard a snap, followed by her own whimpering. Her beautiful tail had been caught in a bear trap. It was only after a tough struggle that she was freed. Although she was no longer trapped, she was still filled with sorrow. Her tail had been cut off and left in the trap. “Oh, how ugly I do indeed look!” Cried the fox, “won’t the other foxes laugh at me?” After racking her brain for quite some time, the fox constructed a plan to prevent being laughed at. Soon after that she called a meeting among her friends and said, “Friends! Have you ever wondered why, after all of the trouble it causes us, we carry these long bushy tails? Let us get rid of them and be free from their nuisance.” To the grief of the fox who was missing her tail, her friends had noticed just that, she was already missing her tail. They laughed aloud and replied, “You used to say that tails looked just fine when your own was okay- and still intact. Now that you’ve lost yours, you want us to lose ours too.” Just as this fox’s friends did, you should always evaluate people's intentions; they may wish to drag you down in order to make themselves feel...

...cold, as it was always this time of year. Autumn's refreshing draft of cool air filled the valley, kissing the river in front of the Husky. The shades of orange, red, and brown around him were typical of course, but there was no harm in hoping these colors would not accompany the fall season this year. The feeling of vibrant energy with dull decay had always struck a chord in his chest. "Is this really necessary Jack?" he shouted further down the river bank, glaring down a red fox pawing softly at the river's current. "Calm down pup, this'll only take a minute if I can just lay a paw on a single fish," Jack shot back quickly with obvious frustration stemming from his voice. His fur was already drenched at his previous attempts, but this did not stray him from his persistence. The Husky had already begun lying down on the bank's shore, paying little attention to Jack's assurance of success. He let out a sigh and licked his front paws. He'll never learn, why does my closest friend have to be the only fox around who can't even catch the smallest of fish? The sound of a splash rang out down the bank. He rolled his eyes knowing this couldn't possibly be the sound of a fish having been caught, but the sound of Jack slipping into the stream. Frustrated at the sound of Jack's obvious failure, he stood to his paws once again, bitter his rest was interrupted so soon. The pack had ordered them to bring back dinner, or risk their own hides in he case of failure. The sun had begun to...

...G is the letter C with an L-shaped end stop. It’s the shape of a device welded onto many bridges to keep the girders from falling and breaking into pieces of concrete and twisted steel. Something shook inside my heart when I saw the handless vet. He crossed the stumps of his arms and cried, “Help me! I’m a vet.” He shivered as the clerks ushered him out of Starbucks on that December night. Then, a man wearing an Airborne cap led him back into the store. He bought the vet coffee and a sandwich. He gave him an old sweat-shirt. As the man in the hat stood guard, a woman approached them. She held her pumpkin latte topped with whipped cream and a drizzle of caramel. “It’s hopeless,” she told the kind man. She’s worked as a social worker in east...

The governess begins her story with her first day at Bly, the country home, where she meets Flora and a maid named Mrs. Grose. The governess is nervous but feels relieved by Flora’s beauty and charm. The next day she receives a letter from her employer, which contains a letter from Miles’s headmaster saying that Miles cannot return to school. The letter does not specify what Miles has done to deserve expulsion, and, alarmed, the governess questions Mrs. Grose about it. Mrs. Grose admits that Miles has on occasion been bad, but only in the ways boys ought to be. The governess is reassured as she drives to meet Miles. One evening, as the governess strolls around the grounds, she sees a strange man in a tower of the house and exchanges an intense stare with him. She says nothing to Mrs. Grose. Later, she catches the same man glaring into the dining-room window, and she rushes outside to investigate. The man is gone, and the governess looks into the window from outside. Her image in the window frightens Mrs. Grose, who has just walked into the room....
