Booker Lee and the County Fair (Booker Lee, for short) is a local Gettysburg, Pennsylvania band that plays music described as alternative country. The band consists of two sets of siblings. Josh is the lead singer and also plays guitar, while his brother Dan plays the bass guitar. Kirsten plays the keyboard and also sings backup vocals, while her brother Jack plays the drums. Dan is the lead guitarist, while oddly enough, his sister Anne is tending the bar. The venue, The Garryowen Irish Pub (The GO, for short), is popular amongst locals and tourists alike. They serve authentic Irish food and beverages, and the atmosphere makes it feel as if you are experiencing a little slice of Ireland, right here in Pennsylvania. Ilsa, who has been a good friend of mine since Middle School, has been a patron of The Garryowen since she turned 21 in 2006. She now helps the bar's owner Kevin with his paperwork as well as waitressing and bar tending. Ilsa says the band's guitarist Dan often joins his friend Ali playing cover songs upstairs, at what they call “The GO too”. The atmosphere upstairs at the Garryowen is more relaxed and homely. Couches, benches and coffee tables occupy the space next to the small bar. Dan and Ali sit in old arm chairs next to one another, while patrons make themselves comfortable in any available space, including the floor. Josh explained that Booker Lee & the county fair has a very strong local following. The band stopped playing shows when one of the members was having legal troubles, but they still gather now and then to join their fans and have a good time. He says the Garryowen is the only venue the band still plays shows at. This is because it is within walking distance of all the members, who are often found relaxing there on the weekends. Josh is also the head cook at the Garryowen, so playing the random show here and there is quite simple for him to set up. While Booker Lee is playing, their local fans are sipping Guinness or Irish whiskey, and singing along to all their songs. Josh and Dan's parents are in the crowd, gleaming with pride for their sons. They danced, sang, and drank with the rest of us who range in age from 21 to early 50's. The fan base is a melting pot of people who dress in all different styles from grungy/punky to preppy, and listen to music of many different genres. Ilsa explained that the employees and friends of the Garryowen, as well as the locals (or regulars) are a very tightly knit group. And this group are lovers of many different types of music. “We love all music, anything we can get our hands on!” she says. When bands perform at The Garryowen, the music often starts around 10pm and there is usually only one band in the line up. On this Saturday night in late March 2014 (3/22/14), the set-up was the same. While I would describe the music Booker Lee played as alternative rock and not alternative country, there was definitely a noticable country tone. Not to mention, many of their songs are about love and loss, something you hear a lot of in country music. After their set, Josh, Dan, Dan, Jack, and Kirsten mingled amongst the bars patrons, as we all praised them for a job well done, on an intoxicating show (pun intended!).

Education Reform And Poverty

...Education reform has a major impact on teaching children of poverty. For decades, education reform has been a leading topic on the national political agenda. It is an epidemic issue which has led to various legislations to include: the Elementary and Secondary Act of 1965 (ESEA), No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) and the most recent, Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Few Americans realize that the U.S. educational system is one of the most unequal in the industrial world, and students routinely receive dramatically different learning opportunities based in their social status (Jensen, 2010). If policymakers continue to ignore the correlation between poverty and education reform, many students will be left behind and unable to succeed in the...

Video Games and Gaming Systems

...Video Games and Gaming Systems Video games and gaming systems have increased in popularity since the first video game; Tennis for Two was created by William Higinbotham in 1958. Just about everyone is playing some kind of video game, on TV, cell phones, and gaming systems (XBox, PS, etc.), but the most popular game types are currently being played online. The majority of the gaming population is playing games for entertainment instead of the traditional media (TV, movies, and music). With the specific audience (let’s call them, Gamers), they are loyal customers and will continue to purchase video games and gaming systems. Since development only takes a few months, the economy will be impacted. According to Xia (2013), “video games is expected to grow from $67 billion to over $82 billion by 2017.” As soon as one video game or gaming system is introduced to the public, there is another one being developed with better graphics and offering more programing complexities to keep their audience wanting more. The environment is impacted largely due to quick development. Every time a video game or gaming system becomes obsolete, consumers rush out to buy the next best thing. Typically, the old video games and gaming systems won't be powerful enough to play the newest games because of processing power, video rendering, and memory needs. The old video games and gaming systems usually end up on a shelf, forgotten, donated, or in a landfills. Gamers prefer to spend...

In 1967 Nokia merged with the Finnish Cable Networks and the Finnish Rubber, becoming a company dedicated to telecommunications, and was the first company to lunch a mobile phone in a car in 1982. ...Analyzing Ava ta r: A Rev iew Essa y Nekeisha Alexis-Baker By the time I decided to see James Cameron’s Avatar, I had already heard enough about the film to be unsure whether it would be worth the time, effort and petroleum to see it. People’s comments about the film ranged from praise for its groundbreaking 3D animation; to criticism of its racist portrayal of the indigenous; to disappointment with the overly predictable storytelling; to appreciation for its critique of colonization and civilization. I even heard complaints from fellow peace church Mennonites about its overwhelming use of redemptive violence. After seeing the film through my Christian anti-civilization (anti-civ) anarchist vegan antiracist woman of color lenses, my sense is that Avatar is more complex than many of its detractors or advocates acknowledge. Set on the planet Pandora, Avatar is a sci-fi story of a mercenary-backed corporation’s attempt to confiscate and mine the land inhabited by humanoid aliens known as the Na’vi. Enter Jake Sully, the paraplegic U.S. marine protagonist who joins the science and anthropology wing of the operation as a substitute navigator for his deceased twin brother’s avatar. Early in the film, we discover that the avatar is an expensive high-tech clone that allows its user to temporarily experience and subsequently infiltrate the Na’vi community. After a series of unexpected events during his first avatar excursion, Jake finds himself living amongst the Na’vi clan known as...

Taj Mahal

...Taj Mahal – A Hindu Shiva Temple-Palace TEJO MAHAL[pic] Islamic dacoits have looted and raped many countries, but no country can tell a bloodier tale of muslim oppression than India! The muslim dacoits started their rule over India in 712 A.D. with the invasion of Mohammed Qasem and looking at the present situation of our country it still continues on today! During their rule they looted and destroyed hundereds of thousands of Hindu temples. Aurangzeb himself destroyed 10,000 Hindu temples during his reign! Some of the larger temples were converted into mosques or other Islamic structures. Ram Janmbhoomi(at Ayodhya) and Krishna Temple(at Mathura) are just two examples. Many others exist! The most evident of such structures is Taj Mahal–a structure supposedly devoted to carnal love by the “great” moghul king Shah Jahan to his favorite wife Mumtaz Mahal. Please keep in my mind that this is the same Shah Jahan who had a harem of 5,000 women and the same Shah Jahan who had a incestuous relationship with his daughter justifing it by saying, ‘a gardner has every right to taste the fruit he has planted’! Is such a person even capable of imagning such a wondrous structure as the Taj Mahal let alone be the architect of it? The answer is no. It cannot be. And it isn’t as has been proven. The Taj Mahal is as much a Islamic structure as is mathematics a muslim discovery! The famous historian Shri P.N. Oak has proven that Taj Mahal is actually Tejo Mahalaya– a shiv temple-palace. His work...

Communication

...EFFECTS OF TELEVISION ON SOCIETY | | | EFFECTS OF TELEVISION ON SOCIETY Television broadcast has broad effects on the society all around the world. The strong verbal and non verbal combination and the facility to highlight different subject matters created one of the most important impressions in mass media. There are so many angles to see as to what extent TV has brought about changes in daily life of people and the nations as well. Here we will see some of the key changes affected by TV transmissions in general. Seeing is believing The authenticity of news and other informative material has never been more acceptable to people through other means of communication than the one available on TV. People already informed about an event still like to see the news along with footage on TV. For instance, the winning run scored by your favorite team in an exciting match is something people would like to see again and again although they know the outcome of the match. So is about visuals on accidents and unusual events like hanging of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussain etc. Changes in timings Most people have tuned their daily timings in accordance with their popular programs. Students tend to finish their homework before their favorite show. Housewives would make their cooking schedule as not to miss the soap tonight. Men would get ready for relaxing by watching programs of their interest. Much noticeable change is in bed-timings. Early to bed... dictum seems to have...
