...How Social Media Negatively Affects Gender Stereotypes The stereotypes that are made today are that girls have been expected to act proper. They are told to do what they should do, and not say anything about it. Girls are constantly reminded by society that they should look, act, and present themselves in a certain manner. For boys, they are expected to be tough, to be strong, and to be a leader. But, why should we try and fit into society's norm? Social media does not help the problem of society's pressure towards teens. It dictates how someone should act, in order to be considered “normal.” Social media has only opened up more and more ways of others trying to change themselves because they aren’t good enough. Many different social media apps allow you to connect with others. Just from the year 2000, there were only 361 million users, compared to the 2.34 billion users now. Even though social media leads people to have more interaction and allows long-distance relationships to actually last, it has a lot of negative things that create many problems for many people. Many social media...

...Every era will have its own style and patterns of music that rouses that particular time on what to say, wear or act. Albert (2009) claims that music is something that everybody can associate with and as it keeps on evolving, so will society. Tune in into radio stations or surf into television channels and endless current mainstream music will be played, repeatedly. While some of the songs are catchy, the meanings behind some songs are extremely provocative. Rap music is known for its reputation for being misogynistic. These days, mainstream rap music contains offensive verses about ladies and features normally half-naked ladies with agendas of getting more viewers. Hip-hop music has convinced society that this is how women should be treated by men and how men can embrace the ‘gangster’ image. Studies have shown that the rate of young boys acting violently in public expanded after these sorts of thug life has been shown in rap music...

...Compliant Destruction Music artists and their lyrics have a very large impact on their adolescent listeners, and the negative influence surrounding today’s popular music is detrimentally affecting today’s youth. “In a study done in 2000, North et al found that a sample of 2465 adolescents in England reported listening to music for an average of 2.45 hours per day” (American Academy of Pediatrics 1). This means that teens are listening to lyrics that desensitize and glamorize the use of drugs, sex, alcohol, and discrimination for at least two hours a day. Then, in addition to listening to music, teens watch explicit music videos, read incriminating articles, and see scandalous stories on the news that further amplify this negative influence....

...they provide a quick glimpse into the mind of a very complex man. It has been written that “NO ONE more exactly personified America's 'slacker' generation than Kurt Cobain, Nirvana's leader and songwriter.” Kurt Cobain is one of the people who have had such an impact on the music of his era that it could be said that he changed music. Cobain wasn’t known for singing or for shredding up and down the fret board with his guitar. He was great because of his ability to make his listeners connect with his songs. Kurt Cobain, a music icon, is one of my favorite artists of all time. His unique personality and the mystery surrounding his death would make for an afternoon of interesting conversation. First I would like to write a song with Kurt Cobain. One of the obvious reasons for meeting him is that I would love to hear him sing and play. As an aspiring artist, I would also like to ask Cobain questions. I would like to talk with him about how he was able to convey his emotions so well through his songs. Cobain liked to include themes from society into his songs, and he used his music to expose problems that he saw and criticize the people responsible. In a line from Come as You Are, Cobain satirically comments on society’s gun control problem with his lyrics “And I swear that I don’t have a gun.” Cobain had an uncanny ability to write about real problems that people faced. The fact that he wasn’t one of those artists’s who just wrote songs to get radio play is another thing that...

...involved in political and social issues. However, Jay-Z disagrees with Belafonte and argues that he consistently uses his presence as a symbol of his social responsibility, thus justifying his definition of charity. Jay-Z’s opinion is rational. By using rap music and methods of technology, Jay-Z contributes to the society in customs that some women and men cannot appreciate. Jay-Z proves that Harry Belafonte’s criticism does not apply to him. In the course of the rally for Trayvon Martin’s justice, Jay-Z and Beyoncé make their appearance. However, at the function Jay-Z pronounces, “I’m not here to do interviews, thank you”. Strictly about his business, and the seriousness of the gathering, Jay-Z presents himself only to pay homage to the slain teen and not to epitomize himself for the paparazzi. President Barack Obama’s second inauguration is another period when Jay-Z shows social responsibility. Broadcasted on television is Jay-Z and Beyoncé sitting at the inauguration. However, the seats that the power couple is sitting in are not just any seats, they are front row seats. Yet again, Jay-Z is physically shown representing himself for the black community; but he portrays charity in other customs as well. Music can also be used as a form of social responsibility. Jay-Z does not have to be physically present in order to celebrate, grieve or appreciate a certain scenario. To address the topic even in a song lyric offers support and reassurance. In the song “Forever Young”...

...revolves around two brothers and their relationship with one another. The narrator, Sonny’s older brother, and Sonny argue over how Sonny chooses to live his life. Sonny is an aspiring musician who engages in drugs to help manage his internal pain. The narrator feels responsible for Sonny and his troubles, but he doesn’t truly understand Sonny or the demons Sonny keeps hidden. Sonny and his brother finally bond when Sonny’s brother hears him play the piano. Sonny releases all of his pain and inner troubles through his passion, which is music. The character, Sonny, prompts me to evaluate the way that different people handle problems by releasing their stress through diverse outlets. The reaction of Sonny’s inner darkness with his light brings about a beautiful creation in his music. This challenges me to believe that no matter the struggle, I can ease my pain by putting my whole self into what I love to do, like Sonny puts all of him into his music. Sonny’s Blues clarifies that no one really recognizes what someone else could be going through and why they would cope the way they...

...To Share or not to Share Peter Todd Shawshank University To Share or not to Share Have you ever taped music off your favorite radio station? That's the old way you would do it if you can't afford the albums. Today people are not only downloading music off the internet but also pictures, movies, games, software and any other kind of computer files that could be beneficial. Each week there are more than one billion downloads of music files alone. Participation in file sharing has also grown. Over 60 million Americans above the age of twelve have downloaded music (Ipsos-Reid, 2002b). File sharing is heavily linked to youth. While a majority of Americans under 18 years old have downloaded and half of those are heavy users, only a fifth of those aged 35-44 have downloaded files (Edison Media Research, 2003). Among U.S. adults at least 18 years old, the number of downloaders has about doubled since 2000 (Pew Internet Project, 2000 and 2003). Because physical distance is largely irrelevant in file sharing, individuals from virtually every country in the world participate. When peers download, they don't all download from one place. Millions of peers around the world are connected and they download files off of each other's computer. Popular networks are Kazaa, WinMX, Limewire, Morpheus, Frostwire and many more. Downloading files is free, but many people are confused that it would be stealing. The RIAA (Record Industry Association of America) had announced that it is stealing...

...“Walk This Way” to “The Show Goes On”: The Progression of Rap Compared to other genres of music, rap is considered to be pretty new. Rap, or hip-hop, is constantly evolving, as do other types of music. Rap is simply described as, “talking in rhyme to the rhythm of a beat” (Hip Hop). When rap was getting started, it only consisted of DJs mixing some beats together along with beat boxing and sampling other songs. As the years went on, people decided to rap over the beats and create a perfect rap song. Some rappers are lyrical geniuses, while others make music purely for a good party song. The radio does not do a good job of playing a variety of rap, now a days mainstream rap that is only good for dancing is being played on the radio. Mainstream rap, to some, would not be considered good music purely because the lyrics are extremely basic. Artists like Run-DMC first started the phenomena, Tupac and Biggie Smalls made rap extremely popular, and present day rappers like Lupe Fiasco keep advancing the music. Run-DMC was not the first rapper to start, but he is a big reason why rap is so popular today. Run-DMC was a hip-hop group located in Queens, New York, and is widely known to be the most influential acts in the history of the hip-hop culture. They were the first group in the genre to have a gold album, and to be nominated to the Grammy Awards. In 1982, Run-DMC released “Sucker MCs” which was a huge hit. Allison Smith illustrates, “This blast of rhythmic minimalism...

...fine art or refined intellectual taste or any socially praised behavior. But in sociological term culture includes all elements and ideas of a society. A group of people who cultivates soil by hand has just as much culture as the group of people who relies on computer operated machinery has. But their cultures are different from each other. A particular society has a particular culture. The major theoretical perspectives on culture and society: Sociologists view culture and society from different perspectives. They are given below - • If we analyze culture and society from the functionalist perspective “Culture reflects a society’s strong central values”. • If we analyze culture and society from the conflict perspective “Culture reflects a society’s dominant ideology”. • If we analyze culture and society from the interactionist perspective “A society’s core culture is perpetuated through daily social interactions”. Classification: Culture can be classified into two categories: material culture and nonmaterial culture. Sociologist William F. Ogburn (1922) made a useful distinction between the elements of material and nonmaterial culture. Material culture refers to the physical or technological aspects of our daily lives,...

...Impact of Globalization on Cultural Practices Shelley Gutierrez, RNC Student ID: 391502 Sgutie6@wgu.edu 02-08-2015 Impact of Globalization on Cultural Practices Globalization has had different impacts on communities, but the most impact has been felt on countries’ cultures. The advent of technology has seen globalization spread to the furthest end of the earth and has even affected the most indigenous of communities today (Mishra, 2008). For the purpose of achieving the objective of this paper, the three native non-western cultures that have been impacted by globalization are Zimbabweans culture, Chinese culture and the Indians culture. They represent the extent that globalization is likely to go on transforming the lives of people. In the Zimbabwean culture, women have been the ones involved in agricultural roles. However, with trade liberalization has seen the act of, not helping women in their agricultural endeavors, and food security has been threatened in the country. The effect of this has been that women in Zimbabwe have resorted to cross-border trade by that leaving fathers behind with the children. To this extent, children do not sit around the fires to listen to stories from their grandparents that are meant to promote love, peace, and respect as they culturally used to engage. Fathers, on the other hand, take part in extramarital affairs by that eroding the moral fabric of these communities culture. The conventional Chinese is characterized by the...

...advertised female subordination. The relative research involves a semiotic analysis of two sources, coupled with a survey of 40 candidates of varying ages. Furthermore, theoretical mechanisms of media framing and cultivation have been deconstructed throughout this article to uncover the impact of magnified female subordination on the domestic expectations of children and young adults. Through the collection of data, it was able to be conclusively recognized the impact of objectification on social attitudes. Results had shown the many conceptions concerning the female purpose, these include; a woman’s role as a domestic and sexual slave to her male partner. Through the convergence of data, semiotic analysis and academic theory, it may be meticulously understood how female objectification in the mass media is a social complication in the construction of an egalitarian future. ‘Women’s bodies are predominantly valued for its use to others’ Fredrickson & Roberts 1997 During the past decade, society has witnessed the progression of information technology, and has been a part of a global communication network that surpasses domestic and moral boundaries. This network has fabricated a sharp impact on national discourse, political policy, and the social attitudes of society, particularly children and young adults. As our society becomes more commercial,...

...Lastly, Cole closed the show with “4 Your Eyez Only” which sums up the entire album. In the track Cole’s friend serves as a metaphor for death within the black communities. He addresses the effects of mass incarceration on children, which made a lot of fans see it as an affirmation. It’s hard for people to make it out of these communities when they are expected to grow up aspiring and expecting nothing greater than climbing the ladder of “hood politics” of drug and territory. He sends out a powerful message to the audience towards the end and speaks on the influence of Rap and Hip-Hop in these colored communities, and how every audience builds up different perceptions. If you listen to violent music then you will have that mentality which is...

...Media and its Influence on Teens Benjamin Morgan COM/172 September 12, 2012 Judith Arent-Morency Media and its Influence on Teens The media surrounds society in a major way. Most people within society are influenced by television, movies, and music whether they realize it or not. The violence in these forms of media can have a heavy impact on a child’s learning process which can carry on into adulthood. Children view cartoons which contain high levels of violence that then teach the children violent behavior without consequence, because parents often do not explain what fantasy is and what is real. All forms of media can have a substantially negative effect on society especially teens. Parents are the key to preventing such major influence by talking with children and teens and help them understand what is right and wrong. As society has grown so has technology. Before television times were more easy going; people were happy to help others, and they had a sense of safety in the community. TV, movies, and music have all changed this. More people break laws and are dishonest, most of society does not feel safe as it is evident by locking of doors and constant upgrades of security measures. TV has greatly influenced these changes. Television promotes alcohol, drug use, sex and violence on a daily basis. Violence has become more prevalent in primetime television; the average child will see thousands of simulated murders before they...

...What Other Cultures Can Teach Us about Sexuality By Zach Daly Professor D Human Sexuality Final Paper Sexuality is an interesting concept, and when examined clearly has a relationship to cultural rules and norms. What is considered acceptable and appropriate sexual behavior varies significantly according to cultural rules, though some sexual taboos and norms seem to cross cultural lines. The fact that cultural norms impact what sexual behaviors are considered appropriate or inappropriate is significant, because many people argue that certain variants of sexuality are either natural or unnatural. However, if some sexual behavior was inherently unnatural, one would not expect to find sexual behavior that is considered aberrant in some cultures as a normative behavior in other cultures. In fact, it is this diversity of “normal” sexual behavior that is the most informative aspect of learning about sexual behavior in other cultures, because it helps explain that what is considered deviant in some cultures is considered normal in other cultures. Of course, examining diverse cultural sexual norms does not mean that all abnormal sexual practices should be embraced as elements of cultural diversity. The fact that a behavior might be considered normative and may be adapted to further cultural norms does not mean that the behavior is necessarily positively adaptive. For example, child brides are the norm in many cultures. The practice of permitting child brides serves...
