...Rebekah Andreasen Community Service I did my community service at East Texas Dream Center and the YMCA. Community service was a blast, as usual! Every time I do community service it makes me smile because I know I’m giving back to the community and I’m helping others. East Texas Dream Center is a woman’s center for the homeless or those who need rehabilitation. It’s honestly an amazing place to volunteer and do community service hours. While at East Texas Dream Center I helped watch the children while bible study and classes were going on. These children hugely impacted my life! They made me think back to the struggles I went through as a child. Seeing these children smile and laugh no matter what happened made me realize that I should never let anything bring me down because there’s always many reasons to smile. I chose this place because these ladies and there children need help, and being apart of those changing the lives of others is one of the greatest feelings in the world. The other place I took care of some hours was the YMCA with my JROTC group. There we painted the barn and made it look awesome! A new painted barn is always a great thing. I volunteered to do community service here because I know how many kids like to go and take ridding lessons or go to look at the horses and giving those kids something new is a blessing. Giving back to the community and center that has given me so much as a child. While volunteering here I learned that hard work...

...most, but to an extent, I have also always felt the urge to help others. Coming from a Hispanic family and being able to go back to my parents’ country of origin has allowed me to view poverty in its most raw form. Growing up, I have always been aware that I am “lucky” and “blessed” as my parents say, to live in the United States and that I have never had to suffer through starvation or dehydration as many have. Since I had the opportunity of visiting my family in the Dominican Republic from a very early age, I was also able to create consciousness of the real problems faced by my fellow Dominicans. My mom had always taught me that donating was a great way to help others. And I could always recall my dad telling me stories about how if a beggar came to my grandmother’s door asking for clothes she would always give up the best she had because not only did she feel sympathy for these poor souls, she also felt that they needed to be respected. I agree with my grandmother because when one donates something it should be of high quality, something that one would wear without a problem, not the most broken and useless item of clothing one can find. My roots in charitable actions came from the compassion that was demonstrated amongst my own family. I had great examples of how one could help others and ever since I was a child, I had always felt that it was my duty, as someone who was fortunate enough to have everything she...

...901-496-2467 Mmoore17@comast.net “Community Service” Community service is when someone performs a duty that benefits his or her community. Community service is sometimes associated with punishment. However, community service is a vital part of many small communities. Numerous organizations around the world support community services activities. These services is performed by volunteers who are not paid for their time. From past experiences, community service may be done for a variety of reasons; to meet the requirements of a class, high community work and a religious reason for serving. First, I serve to meet requirements of a class. While in middle school at Kirby Middle School. I volunteered with a group called Kirby Kings. This group was made up of a group of young men that were taught the traits of becoming intelligent men. At least one Saturday out of the month, we had to volunteer by helping others to clean the streets of Memphis, TN. Doing this time, we picked up trash and clean up parks. The experience was alarming. This really made me want to change my ways by not throwing trash on the ground but into a trash bin. I did not enjoy the movement of cleaning after others. But I am more pleased to say I pick up behind myself and others. This experience has taught me to be responsible for my actions and to take encourage others to do the same. Next, another reason for community service is high school community work. As a current student at East High...

...Kyle Zickefoose Antonette Navarro Community Service 305 Dec. 4, 2014 Final Integration Paper Over the course of this semester I have learned so much in this Community Service 305 class. In this paper I will discuss my new understanding of active citizenship, community engagement, and social responsibility. I will also share some of my personal accounts during my time doing community service, how this has been much more than a one-way relationship, and some of the social issues facing the mental health population. The last thing I will be discussing is how this experience has transformed who I am as a person and how I will integrate what I have learned into my personal life. Before I started this class, I was not looking really looking forward to it. I always assumed that community service was done by retired people or celebrities looking for good publicity, but I was definitely wrong. This class has changed the way I look at community service and I now see it as a crucial part of any thriving community. Multiple videos were shown to us in class about single individuals starting large movements by cutting there own path and not being afraid of deviating from the rest of the crowd. The one video that I remember vividly was one of young boy trying to move a huge log that had fallen in the middle of the road and was blocking traffic. The boy had no chance of moving the log by himself, but he never gave up and eventually people began to start pushing the log with him...

...LET’S MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!! Participating in community service projects is a great way to give back to your community. In some cases, working on these types of projects can involve activities that require you to raise money, but not always. Some of these types of projects like community clean up simply require time and a commitment to sharing your effort and abilities to improve the community where you live or to make life better for someone who is less fortunate than you are. I believe that community service and volunteerism are very important. The best thing a person can donate is their time. It makes me feel worth of myself because I see that I am useful, especially in my community I feel it’s every individual’s responsibility to help others in their community and beyond. There are many ways that I feel I would benefit from community service. Volunteer to help clean up an area within the community that needs attention, is what we do. We inquire first and then ask permission to the barangay captain if is it okay to have our community service in their barangay. Fortunately the barangay captain gave his permission. By being civic minded and understanding the importance of volunteerism, everyone has the ability to make a difference. Participating in community service projects individually or with group of friends, peers, or colleagues can a powerful way to have a positive impact on the community and on the lives of many people who are in need of assistance. One, it would...

...Prison has long been the traditional punishment for people who commit crimes. Some people believe, however, that community service orders are more appropriate in some cases. When do you think that it is right to order people to work in the community to pay for their crimes? It has never been straightforward to know how to decide to punish criminals for their actions. It does seem clear, though, in this day and age that work in the community is a viable alternative to custodial sentences for minor offences and, perhaps, in cases where there are mitigating factors. In this essay, I attempt to explain when I believe these community service orders should be made. The first set of circumstances when community work is the appropriate sanction is for less serious offences when the offender shows remorse for his actions. Part of the reason for this is that it may be wrong to take away someone’s livelihood by sending them to prison, simply because they have written graffiti on a wall. Likewise, there is a significant danger that these minor offenders would become hardened criminals if they spent time with career criminals in prison. I would emphasise, however, that it should be a condition that the criminal regrets his actions and it is only appropriate for first time offenders. The other major instance when there is a strong argument to order people to work in the community is when their crimes are unlikely to be repeated. For example, someone who has caused an accident and been caught...

...NSBE I went to a NSBE meeting on October 18th for my networking assignment. NSBE stands for the National Society of Black Engineers. It was founded in 1975 at Purdue University, and is one of the largest student-run organizations in the United States. I was interested in going because a lot of the teacher assistants in my Intro to Engineering class are apart of the NSBE student organization and they always say how much they love it. I was also interested in their mission, I heard that they wanted to get more African American students interested in becoming engineering majors and helping them through school. I am an African American male and I wanted to see how they operated and get a better feel for what they are all about. NSBE is centered on improving the recruitment and retention of African-American engineering students, and making an interest and a deep love for the career students are pursuing. NSBE’s mission is “to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.” They encourage members to seek advanced degrees in engineering or related fields and to obtain professional engineering registrations. Promote public awareness of engineering and the opportunities for Blacks and other minorities in that profession. They also function as a representative body on issues and developments that affect the careers of Black Engineers. New and innovative project ideas are generated...

Nowadays, many people have to learn as many skills as they can, so that they can get the jobs that they are interested in. The government requires students to perform minimum of 40 hours community service to graduate from. Many high school students do not know how to have well communication and organization skills, so I think that students have to complete community service hours to graduate, so that they will become responsible members of our society in the future. Community service assignments can teach students to be on time for a service they are providing for. The place that they are doing the service at may be able to teach them a lesson so that they can use it in the future as experiences they have obtained on the job. You should do the services from your heart and do not give up easily. ...American were greatly involved within their community. However, since Americans started to pull away from one another and their community, the “community vitality” weakened. Putnam uses bowling as an illustration for his claim. By using statistics and charts, Putnam compares the participation of individuals in bowling to those who actually are in league bowling; the percentage declining by 40% while bowlers themselves increased by 10. The concept of “bowling alone” is not a literal term but comparatively speaking they are bowling along because informal groups, which are typical in most cases, can not replenish social capitol. Still Bowling Alone happened to fall under the original Bowling Alone 15th Anniversary and it revisits some civic disengagement as well as touches on the after 9/11 generation and compares their involvement in politics compared to their elders when they were their age. The newer generation was revived as far as its involvement in their community after tragedy struck the mainland as well as some presidency mile stones. Putnam discusses a threat to America due to the a growing gap between the youth which involved their self-esteem, family support, social trust civic and religious engagement; all of which threaten social mobility and cohesion. Within my community I am a servant for the people. I attend neighborhood churches, which I am often asked for to speak to the youth. I have always been involved in community service projects which have included picking...

...As the Prison system is overburdened, judges are giving Community Service Sentences instead of imprisonment for Minor Non-Violent Crimes. Will this be good for the society in the long run? Offences that are defined as Minor Non-Violent Offences are those that are against the law but are not usually viewed as serious enough to be taken to the court if done once or twice (Notton, 2010). An example of non violent offence is burglary or motor vehicle theft. Community Service is an alternative of imprisonment imposed by the Court for minor non violent crimes. Community service is an unpaid work for the criminal so that he can repay the debt to the society for committing the offense (An tSeirbhis Phromhaidh The Probation Service, n.d.). Community service can also be a job for which any particular individual can volunteer for. An example of a community service is cleaning up the environment. Giving community service sentences instead of imprisonment for minor non-violent crimes would be good for the society in the long run because the criminal will get a second chance in life, it will reduce the burden on the prison system and society will benefit from community service. However individuals may take advantage of the system by taking too long to complete their community service work, although people might try to take advantage, if the work is done slowly then the criminals will be severely punished. Everybody makes mistakes, while others don’t bother to make it right, some people...
