Critical Thinking Assignment 1

Part One:
The Question of Origin
The Quran states that "Allah created the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, in six days" (7:54). While on the surface this might seem similar to the account related in the Bible, there are some important distinctions.
After completing the Creation, the Quran describes that Allah "settled Himself upon the Throne" (57:4) to oversee His work. A distinct point is made to counter the Biblical idea of a day of rest: "We created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them in six days, nor did any sense of weariness touch Us" (50:38).
Allah is never "done" with His work, because the process of creation is ongoing. Each new child who is born, every seed that sprouts into a sapling, every new species that appears on earth, is part of the ongoing process of Allah's creation. "He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six days then established Himself on the Throne. He knows what enters within the heart of the earth, and what comes forth out of it, what comes down from heaven, and what mounts up to it. And He is with you wherever you may be. Allah sees well all that you do" (57:4). Retrieved September 20, 2012 from http://islam.about.com/od/creation/a/creation.htm
The Question of Identity
The Quran describes how Allah created Adam: “We created man from sounding clay, from mud molded into shape…” (15:26). “He began the creation of man from clay, and made his progeny from a quintessence of fluid: (32:7-8). Thus, human beings have a fundamental attachment to the earth. While the creation of Eve is not described in detail, the Quran does make it clear that a “mate” was created with Adam, from the same nature and soul. Retrieved

...succeed both in my studies and in the career I have chosen. I have learned how to manage my time and decrease my stress. I learned how to use critical thinking to solve problems effectively. These class discussions have brought up many ideas that will help me manage my time and in doing this I am managing my stress too. I have learned not to wait to the last minute to start my assignments. Doing this allows me time to review my work and correct what I might have overlooked. I can use this skill professionally as well. If I do not wait to complete my duties until the last minute then I will allow myself time in case something unexpected happens. ...Smarthinking's Tutor Response Form (Your marked-up essay is below this form.) HOW THIS WORKS: Your tutor has written overview comments about your essay in the form below. Your tutor has also embedded comments [in bold and in brackets] throughout your essay. Thank you for choosing Smarthinking's OWL; best wishes with revising your paper! Hi Denise! My name is Keren H., and I will be reviewing your submission today. Thank you for an interesting piece of research on Background Checks. In today’s review, we will revise sentence structure, word choice, and documentation. Strengths of the essay: Denise, “References” is the correct name for the heading of your page of sources. Good job! Sentence Structure: One or two of your sentences are “run-ons”. This means that two ideas “run on” into each other with no punctuation or links to separate them. Let’s see an example, and discuss how to correct the run-on:  A background check is a must in today’s business world. You never know what you may find on the applicant. What two ideas do you see here? “A background check is a must in today’s business world” is one; the rest makes up another idea. The easiest way to separate two ideas (two main clauses) is to put each in a sentence of its own. What punctuation (such as a capital letter and period) will you add, so that you have TWO sentences instead of the run-on? Visit Run-ons and Comma Splices to find more ways to revise run-ons. Word Choice: Denise, I notice that you use...

Week9 Powerpoint

...Week 9 Assignment It is amazing that after nine weeks of a critical thinking class, I have not only understood what critical thinking means but I can apply it to my everyday life. Based on responses from my week one assignment, I can easily see that my responses were based on common sense responses versus having actual knowledge on critical thinking. I see now that critical thinking is disciplined intellectual criticism that combines research, knowledge of historical context, and balanced judgment. Critical thinking involves applied thinking to its problem or issue. Throughout the nine weeks of class there have been several things I have learned about critical thinking. A lot of the critical thinking techniques have been good ways for me to actively use my critical thinking skills. In addition, there are some that stuck with me, like in week three I learned how to be a critical reader, listener, and viewer. In week five, I also learned the difference between Issues and problems. I tackled that in a two part Learnscape exercise that helped me understand the difference when dealing with a problem with teenagers using drugs. In week seven, I also learned the role of criticism which taught me why critical thinking is necessary and an overview of how critical thinking is applied to problems and issues in everyday life. The way I think critically since the start of this course has changed dramatically because I no longer just look at a problem and let it be or just apply simple...

Critical Thinking

...Critical Thinking is the ability to combine information from internal and external sources, analyze that information, and evaluate it to determine how it relates to the situation at hand. We also use our experiences and moral beliefs to guide us through the critical thinking process. One of the elements of critical thinking is being able to reasonably and objectively evaluate multiple and sometimes conflicting sets of information and beliefs. Once armed with the available facts or details, the information is then used to make a decision about the matter. The ability to objectively evaluate sets of information and apply it to any situation at hand, whether it be morally ambiguous or as simple as deciding what brand of milk to buy, is a valuable trait to possess because it ensures that every decision you make will have the maximum benefit and minimum cost for each person involved. There are many reasons to be a critical thinker. I will give just a couple of concrete examples, although I am sure there are many more that others will expound upon. Critical thinking makes it harder for one to be deceived or swindled – think about a time when you received a phone call from someone claiming that you have won a trip or a prize. Now, the first thing to ask oneself is “did you put your name in a drawing for said prize?” If the answer is no, then you can be certain the call is a prelude to phishing. If you allow the scenario to play itself out, the perpetrator is sure...
