English Comprehension II: Arguing About Literature has opened a completely new door on my writing performance. There were times that I thought I knew how to do a research essay but was proven wrong. This class has improved my performance in writing in many ways. Through class assignments to in class discussions, it has continually improved my thinking skills. This class taught me how to select appropriate sources for college research; it has improved my skills as a critical thinker and writers and brought to light skills that I still need to work on.
This class has taught me how to use and find appropriate and varied sources for a college research. I never knew that there were sites that could help me with finding trustworthy sources for my assignments. Using the student library at TCC, I am able to use EBSCOhost, Gale, Arman, and many more to meet the criteria of my essay while using credible sources. Mrs. Mustapha also taught me how to quote and propyl cites and insert these sources so they can flow smoothly with the other sentences. …show more content…
These assignments challenge me to look deeper into the meaning of not only the book but as to why the author put it in the book. This skill has author developed my critical thinking skills and I can now read a book and point out literature elements, such as foreshadowing, character development, and dialogue between characters. Through critical thinking my critical writing has also improved through the Weekly Reflections that were due once a week. These reflections were about a story that we read and then I have to put my input on it. The next day we would discuss the assignment in class and I began to learn how everyone saw the story in a different light. While some things may be similar in their reasons, almost everyone had something different to contribute which made me eager to combine my critical thinking with my critical

Fortunately, cognitive and educational psychologists have been developing and evaluating easy-to-use learning techniques that could help students achieve their learning goals. In this monograph, we discuss 10 learning techniques in detail and offer recommendations about their relative utility. We selected techniques that were expected to be relatively easy to use and hence could be adopted by many students. Also, some techniques (e.g., highlighting and rereading) were selected because students report relying heavily on them, which makes it especially important to examine how well they work. The techniques include elaborative interrogation, self-explanation, summarization, highlighting (or underlining), the keyword mnemonic, imagery use for text learning, rereading, practice testing, distributed practice, and interleaved practice.   To offer recommendations about the relative utility of these techniques, we evaluated whether their benefits generalize across four categories of variables: learning conditions, student characteristics, materials, and criterion tasks. Focusing on Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games series (2008, 2009, 2010), the author addresses how elements of the trilogy relate to violent acts in our world, helping student understand that violence and brutality toward children is not fiction, but very real, and that they can play a role in its abolishment, just like Katniss, through social action projects. Issues such as hunger, forced labor, child soldiers, and the sex trade that appear in both the fictional series and our world are discussed, encouraging students to assess their world and advocate for change. Archival data from 838 cases (12% of which were ELL cases) within five mid-Atlantic public school districts implementing IC Teams were analyzed for outcomes using logistic regression. Results included statistically significant differences in ELL versus non-ELL student initial team referral (IC or other prereferral intervention team) and ultimate IEP Team referrals. Initial referral concerns also differed significantly between ELL and non-ELL students. IC Teams were found to be more effective than existing prereferral intervention teams in decreasing the special education referrals of ELL and non-ELL students. The results of the present study serve as a foundation for future research in the areas of at-risk ELL students and their referrals to prereferral intervention teams and special education.
