...To singularly define my identity, culture and family in three items is extremely difficult. How do I encapsulate my entire essence with three tangible materials to complete strangers? After much thought, conversation, and pure chance the three things I would have to explain my background would be a football, Gummibärchen, and a pair of pink baby booties. The three things I have selected encompass my family identity, link to my German and American heritage, and pay ode to myself and culture. Football may seem like a typical American nod to our culture, but in my circumstance it is atypical. For as long as I can remember, football has been one of the only things to bring my family together. In 2006, I remember living on the military base, Camp Lejuene, and my mum burning her Pittsburg Steelers candle while the Steelers...

...For different cultures and ways of life that I have been presented to in my life, I am certainly open to new values and cultures. I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t open to different cultures and different ways of life. I grew up in a small town in northern Ontario, in which there wasn’t a lot of different cultures. So, when I moved around and moved to Montreal, I fully embraced all cultures and all different ethnicities. I think that I am this way because of my background (I’m Aboriginal) and I would hope that the outside world and society don’t stereotype me or judge me just based on looks and my culture. That’s why I’ve never had a ‘culture shock’ or judged people’s culture that I’ve never seen or met before. I go through the stages of culture shock quite quickly and adjust to different locations or cultures rapidly. For self-disclosure, I feel that there is very few people that I can trust in my life. There are different situations that I disclose to different people. I am very close to my family, especially my mother. I disclose more to her than others in my family. For my friend’s, There are very few friend’s that I disclose personal information too. There are my best friends that I am very close to and...

...My Reaction Paper On The Interrelationship Of Language and Culture What is Language? What is Culture? How are language and culture interrelated? Language as one element of culture has a very important role in human life. Language allows a person communicating with others in meeting their needs. Thus, it can be said is the main function of language as a communication tool. This does not mean that the language has only one function. Another function is as a tool to express self-expression, a tool to make integration and social adaptation, as well as a tool to hold social control. (Keraf, 1980: 3) Culture is the whole communication system that binds and allows operation of a set of people called the public. Thus culture can be defined as a "system of rules of communication and interaction that allows a society occurs, preserved, and preserved" Culture that gives meaning to all business and human movements. (Nababan, 1984: 49) The verbal expression of culture is language as culture is the idea, custom and beliefs of a community with a distinct language that includes semantics which is everything that the speakers in a certain community can think about and every way they do things. In other words, every community with different culture has a different language. Although language and culture are not inseparable basically, it is easy to understand language has a specific culture's method of expressing ideas. Verbal language which can also be via signs and symbols or via hand...

...The author of the story, Richard Rodriguez, is of Hispanic origin. However, he does not consider himself as belonging to only one ethnicity. Rather, he claims “I am my culture” (729). This claim comes from his blending of the many ethnicities he has lived amongst while growing up in a diverse America. Richard’s idea has not been accepted by everyone, and he has many critics. Some of them classify him as a “self-hating ethnic” (728). While the author acknowledges our own individual ancestry could include many backgrounds, he points out that pieces of different ethnicities could affect us as well (734). One particular memory Richard shares is a trip to Dublin, in which he makes personal connections of his upbringing amongst Irish Americans to...

...-Narrative Papers: How it felt to be an outsider in my own home. As an islander of Pohnpei, which is an island located in the middle of the Pacific, you are expected to know so many cultural norms. Some of the norms include knowing how to plant a Sakau, or knowing how to prepare a Sakau, or even knowing how to speak Maing, which is a higher form of my language. My father made it his number one priority to make sure that my brothers and I were well versed in our cultural ways. However, he noticed that one of his sons was very different and was really peculiar, and that son was me. I spent most of my life trying to make sure that my cultural life had an influence on my normal everyday life but it was a really difficult task to do. A lot of people would say that their culture makes up who they are as a person, however, I would say that culture only makes up a part of who I am today. My culture teaches everyone on my island how they should act, talk, and basically what their whole life should be like. I was never one to follow rules. I’m not saying that I didn’t agree with our cultural laws but I only followed those that would make me a better person and not only a model citizen of what islanders should look like. I would always act differently not because I was being rebellious but because I wanted to be more open to things so I open up myself to other lifestyles. My parents wanted my sibling and me to be well versed in Pohnpeian, the main name for our language, but they wanted...

...person is focusing on something different, thinking of something different, and noticing something different. That is why every person has a story to tell, and it is why we can learn from every single person. And this essay is about my short autobiography, which can give you an indication of my personal story. I came into this world on the windy morning of October 15, 1990. I was born in Cua Viet, a small town in Vietnam. I am the 5th child among the 5 children of my parent. I grew up and spent almost my whole life in my country. Now, I am the second year student in Business Accounting- the 2 year program. I have been through many life-changing situations in past 3 years. These situations have had both positive and negative impacts to me. My goals from 5 years ago compare to my current goals are totally different. After finishing 12th grade, I just wanted to become a Mathematics teacher, so I went to Hue University and tried my best to achieve the goal. However, when I was the 2nd year student of the Hue University, I found that I was no longer interested in becoming a teacher. Hence, I dropped the school and wanted to get a better education in Canada and seek opportunities in accounting. Since then, my life has changed. On one hand, starting my new life in a strange country is so hard. When I just came, I faced many difficulties, such as the language, the weather and the life style. Firstly, language was a big matter when I first came. Speaking was one of the linguistic problems...

...sleeping the whole day and I got so many thoughts playing on my mind so I choose to rise get the laptop and type. 1. Second to my final destination ( … Well this is not a horror film; this destination I’m talking about is the force or factor that makes me go and face every life’s circumstances I am facing. My ultimate dream is to become a flight attendant, cabin crew, flight crew or whatever they call this. Yes, I’ve been dreaming to become one someday and I am trying to give my very best for this not to become an unclear vision. I want this to manifest, I want this to happen in my life in every good ways or means I can. As I’ve said on my recent posts, I love to go somewhere, I love to experience different culture, and I want to meet new and different people. There are some times in my life when I face mirror, stand classically and gracefully and try to imitate flight attendants posture and speaking. I used to act like there are passengers and I am orienting them with safety procedures inside the plane. To train to become a flight attendant costs so much, that’s why my parents wasn’t able to send me to those schools practicing this course. But I’ve got this what they called life’s principle. I believe with all my heart that nothing is definitely impossible that my future has been planned and decided. I just love the thought that God is faithful, with His words, His promises and plans. I trust Him with this. This is my heart’s very secret petition to heaven and to Jesus. His...

...Kimberly Tucker, Chris Salt, Ashley Solomon Case 7: Mattel: Overcoming Marketing and Manufacturing Challenges 11/01/2010 Marketing Management 6800 Section 004 The Problem: The problem surrounding Mattel Inc., one of the world’s largest toy companies, is their mismanagement of international subcontractors and vendors and the production of certain toys (the manufacturing process), as well as their inability to adapt their marketing strategy or product to the constantly changing “demographic and socioeconomic trends” (Ferrell, et. all 466). This is supported by Mattel’s legal battle with Carter Bryant and MGA, their forced recall of certain toys that were manufactured overseas, and the increasing rate at which traditional toys are becoming less appealing to today’s young audience. Essentially, Mattel’s mismanagement and oversight lead to violations in terms of ethical and social responsibilities and safety standards. Issues Relevant to the Problem: Mattel’s problem of mismanagement can be divided into several issues that need to be considered: legal issues, international supply chain issues, and an increase in technology-based toys. In regards to legal issues, Mattel has been involved in prolonged litigation with Carter Bryant and MGA over a breach of an employment contract and copyright infringement. Due to Mattel’s poor management of its overseas manufacturers, in which unauthorized subcontractors and third-party suppliers were hired and unsafe materials used, several...

...Why would an author of a book influence me so much? It is because Daniel Quinn has written "My Ishmael" in such a beautiful way that what he's thinking comes across to you like as though you're having a conversation in person with him. He uses a talking Gorilla as a means to convey his points of view on how the world is in a degenerative mode and though I felt this strange at first, it became clear later as to why he used a Gorilla in the first place. The Gorilla here represents nature's voice and is a reminder that we need to look for ways to communicate with nature, first hand. This was the first eye opening aspect from the author. The second was the author's penchant for coming up with brilliant stories to derive and communicate his point to the reader. Instead of driving in his philosophies by pure theory would have been boring and heavy, but the author uses wonderful and thought provoking stories to do the same, so effectively. The first was the simple concept of food kept under lock and key. This is a practice that comes so naturally to us, but he brings out why this is a very unnatural way of things. For early man, what grew in the world belonged to everyone in the society, and to put it under lock and key is to basically create a working class who will do tasks, useful or useless, in order to earn their bread. Ishmael's (the name of the gorilla) teachings turn toward the subject of formal education, which he argues is merely a way to keep children out of the work...

...My effort to fit in American culture My idea of what American culture has changed greatly since I have emigrated from my home land of Mongolia. As an undergraduate student, I participated in American studies and English as a secondary language. This did not prepare me for the cultural shock and social obstacles that I would have to overcome. My goals of establishing a new life and fitting into the melting pot of the American culture were highly understated and unrealistic. It was a dark and rainy day when I first arrived at O’Hare International Airport. When I arrived in America, I had a student visa, a partial scholarship, and five hundred dollars in my purse. I had confidence that I could pay the remainder of my tuition, living expenses, and book fees with a part time job. I was quick to learn that my visa did not open the doors to my expectations. The bureaucratic cultural restrictions were about to make a lasting impression on all my expectations and plans. According to the homeland security regulations, a foreign student must have a work permission document to earn any kind of supplemental income. If I was given a waiver, I would then be restricted to work no more than twenty hours a week. The college I was planning to attend had a strict policy that did not allow international students to be employed, even on a part time basis. I then learned that any student who did not have a proper documentation could not obtain a social security card. I found myself in...
