...Critical Analysis of the 1978 Michael Winner version of The Big Sleep * Discuss the film as an adaption of Chandler’s novel * Is the film successful and why? * Compare and contrast it to Hawk’s version of The Big Sleep Specs: 5-6 pages Double space 12 point common font like Times New Roman, Arial, Courier, etc. Number your pages Proofread and make corrections in pen or pencil before submitting. 1939 Chandler’s original novel * Marlowe functions as a peacekeeper and is more likely to negotiate rather than incite them to violence * Police corruption is examined as closely as the crime scene itself (creates social tensions * He exposes social inequities that Hollywood glossed over at the time * Masculine loyalty and private eye skepticism * Vivian’s presence declines in the novel and Chandler does not develop a romance plot between her and Marlowe, as Hawks does 1946 Hawk’s adaptation * The narrative was shaped according to perceived mainstream moral values (men over women, etc.) * Marlowe and Vivian are romantic and have sexually loaded exchanges * Marlowe flirts with many women in the film * Marlowe is much like James Bond, making girls instantly fall for him (flirting with the girl in the Acme Book Shop, and the taxi driver) * Motivated by feelings for Vivian * Film noir style * Although Hawks’s stoic masculine ethos representation promises to reflect the introspective ethos of Chandler’s...

...Raymond Chandler’s book “The Big Sleep” is a complex murder mystery with numerous characters, each of whom story intersects with the other in some way. There are several women characters; however, all of their stories rely on men. Nonetheless, Chandler make it so that each women has her own individual personality and each female character is treated uniquely throughout the text. The names of these characters are Vivian Sternwood, Carmen Sternwood, Agnes and Mona Grant. In discussing Chander’s treatment of these characters, I will discuss the overall similarities and differences, then I will compare the two Sternwoods and lastly compare them to Agnes and Mona. From this book, it appears that Chandler has two distinct ways in which he depicts women and this will be demonstrated throughout this discussion. There is one primary overall similarity in the depiction of the female characters, and this similarity links their stories. They all are depicted as to have an attraction to men with either power, confidence, a dangerous lifestyle or money. Vivian was married to a man named Terrence Regan—a rough bootlegger from Ireland that once commanded a whole brigade. Carmen was attracted to pretty much any man that was masculine. Agnes was the girlfriend of Joe Brody and then of Harry Jones, both men were criminals with tough personalities. Lastly, Mona was the wife of Eddie Mars, a man that stood against everything the protagonist Marlowe stood for so he was the bad guy. Moreover, he...

...when, these events happen. For the most part all the music in the film is lower pitched and mysterious. The cynical aspect adds to the mystery of the movie, and the dark subject of murders. The sarcasm compliments the cynical tone, but also lightens the tone at the same time. An example of Marlowe’s sarcasm is when General Sternwood asks him how he likes his brandy and Marlowe replies “in a glass”. We see many more scenes where Marlowe chooses to use sarcasm throughout the movie. This is part of his personality, but also sets the tone for the movie. We know that even in serious times Marlowe will still crack a joke. We see this when Marlowe makes a joke while talking about getting injured. “You know what he'll do when he comes back? Beat my teeth out, then kick me in the stomach for mumbling.” I think the tone is what would normally be expected in a hard-boiled detective fiction, as the tone seems to go hand in hand in with the private investigators. Part of this is because it’s from the point of view of the investigator so we are able to get to know and understand them better, which reflects the tone of the films. In classic era stories we don’t know much about the detective. In hard-boiled we get to see more of their personality. In the classic era we don’t know much about the detectives love life while in The Big Sleep we see Marlowe flirt continuously. An example of this is when he playfully replied to Carmen after she said he was cute. He replied, “I'm getting cuter...

...ne would think that it would be quite easy to adapt a novel to a screenplay; after all, what is there to do but turn the dialogue into lines and description into set design? However, common sense, aided by the horrifying number of absolutely awful adaptations, dictates that it simply is not that easy. When moviegoers have problems with a film adaptation of a book, their complaints tend to lie in the tendency of the creators of the film to change elements of the story: plot, character, and the like. It would seem, then, that the best way to make a successful adaptation of a novel would be to just stay as true as possible to every detail mentioned in the book. However, staying as true as possible to plot points, character type, and the like may be the best way to a horrendous adaptation. In moving from the printed page to the silver screen, moviemakers must be aware that they are not simply reproducing a narrative&emdash;they are changing the medium by which the narrative is presented. Oddly enough, cinema lends itself easily to some of the tenets of writing well: namely, the command of, "show, don't tell." In cinema, there is no option, really, of telling, "the details are not asserted as such by a narrator but simply presented." (Chatman 406). The use of a voiceover, of course, is an option, but even the voice of an omniscient narrator cannot stop the viewer from seeing the images and interpreting what he sees. In movies, the viewer does his own telling. The...

With a smile like that you can not help but feel the love run through your veins right down to your soul. We get out to strongly embrace each other as we always do. Immediately your nose is filled with the mix between bursts of fresh mountain air and the burning of bug spray that they had practically bathed in before venturing into the beautiful mosquito heaven! As the evening wears on we have the usual family dinner, shower, long talks filled with laughter, then finally bed. The next morning my Paw Paw, Meemaw, and I wave a farewell to my parents as they pull out on their journey back to North Carolina. Now we will start our own journey as we stroll through the amazing gardens that fill every square foot of his beautiful estate. He has a garden for every mood, a vegetable garden, a sculpture garden, a moss garden, a zen garden, a garden surrounding the coy pond, a japanese garden, and the list goes on and on as you tour his property that spans approximately 40 acres. The first couple of days are always nice, we walk, we talk, we swim, we do anything we please as I settle into my yearly summer escape! Then following my relaxing days comes the days of work. ...THE NEO-NOIR '90S Contents 1. Ten Best Noir Rentals Listen Pause Loading | Download MP3 Help | | | Section: THE ARTS 'L.A. Confidential' is one sign that this is a decade of danger, at least in our fantasies. It's stylish to be sultry and shady. AFTER WORLD WAR II French critics became aware of a new mood gloomy, doomy and dangerous--in Hollywood movies, They coined a term, film noir, to describe these crime-infested, shadow-draped, black-and-white movies. What they couldn't have foreseen was how a fatalistic cinematic style would turn, in the pre-millennium '90, into a lifestyle. Noir is decidedly back--in the clothes we wear, the music we hear, the ads we read and in the most critically acclaimed movie of the year, "L.A. Confidential." Pottery Barn is offering a black "Dial for Murder" rotary phone. The new lounge-lizard culture, flaunting such retro poisons as martinis and cigarettes, invites us to glamorously rebel against an age of abstinence and political correctness. The folks at Camel advertise their beleaguered product with an image of a femme fatale beckoning us to danger. Tom Ford's new Gucci collection is noir-inspired down to its '40s-era monkey-fur jacket--and even Ralph Lauren is unleashing metal spike heels this season. Not coincidentally, Carly Simon has come out with a CD called "Film Noir," following k.d. lang's torchy, nicotine-infused "Drag." And once disreputable pulp fictions have been canonized by the Library of America series, which...

...new outfit instead of that filthy dress that I have been wearing. All black again, of course. Black pants, black boots, and a black shirt. I walked around in my new boots, “It’s been awhile since I’ve worn shoes. I’m glad we finally made it here. I thought back to the time when we were first introduced here. àFlashback (1 month ago) ß It was the day after the full moon when I met her. Kat is what Reno called her. Cloud seemed to know her too, though I could tell they haven’t met in a long while. “Kat…?” I said, staring at her. She nodded, her face set. Something told me this girl’s been through a lot. She swallowed. Reno spoke up, “I’ve known the girl for a good 10 years. She doesn’t talk much at all. I’ve only heard one sound from her-” He shut his mouth quickly, “Me and my big mouth. Anyways, she’s never spoken. And I’m sure she won’t talk unless she feels the need to-” “I think we get the point, Reno.” I stated, “So your Kat, huh?” I smiled a little at her, “It’s a pleasure to meet you.” She shook my hand, I felt a jolt of energy pass through us. I blinked in shock, she quickly pulled her hand back. I sighed, then I heard Vincent spoke up, “Now that introductions are over, where should we head next? We need a safe place to be and stock up on supplies.” We stared at Cid’s map of the world. I scratched my cheek, “Well…” I saw a finger point at Costa Del Sol. It was Kat. “Costa Del Sol?” Reno asked, “Isn’t that where that lady you were living with moved too?” ...

...blabbering stuff about algebra and irrational numbers. I don't really have anything against Math, except that I have low grades in it. The only subject I'm ever good at is Physical Education. Even so, I am still beaten at it by the ever so perfect “Allen Walker”. What's with him, really? He's good at everything, even in Cooking Class. Although he can't par with me in cooking commoner's food, he always cooks exquisite viands. People adore him to the very core of Earth. He's like some Buddha in school. He's like the Super Star that never existed. Anyway, I feel that it won't be good if I fill the whole first paragraph of the first chapter with every crap about him. Let’s go to me first. My name is”Haruka Azumi Yukihara”. I am a most typical female student of Hakuo Academy. My forte is Physical Education and my Achilles' heel is just about anything except Physical Education. Yes, I know that's a lot that's why I'm not enumerating it. Today is June 13, 2011 and everything is just about how everything shouldn't be. Ah, of course it's the fault of mankind, as always. At least it's not the fault of Allen-kun. Either way, I'm stuck in this school and an addiction to Death Note. Now what is Death Note? It's a story about this cool guy who kills all criminals with a pen and a notebook. Now don't go imagining him hitting the criminals with the notebook and finishes it off by piercing the pen to the criminal's throat. That's disgusting, although he can actually do that. That would put more gore...
