...My Secret Place Guides1Questions1orSubmit my paper for analysis What is your attitude towards loneliness? Do you think it is a curse, when you are isolated from the rest of the world, left face-to-face with yourself? Or do you, on the contrary, seek it, appreciating each moment of silence you can snatch from the surrounding world? These small breaks can help you replenish your energy and reorganize your thoughts, so that you can start each day as a new one—not as an extension of a previous one. As for me, I am more of the second kind of person; solitude for me is a gift, which is valued less by people than it should be accorded. In my child and teen years, I had a perfect place to go to when I felt like being on my own. In a small town in the center of America, where I lived back then, we had a steep hill on the outskirts. On its top, an old warehouse stood. No one, even older people, seemed to know who had built that warehouse in such an inconvenient place, and what for. Some said that smugglers used it during World War II for their purposes; others told stories about local slaveholders, who lived in our town a long time ago—those people were thought to have kept slaves in the old warehouse. For us children, that old wooden shack was a haunted place with a grim, bloody story of love and treason. None of the townsmen had ever visited the old warehouse. Children were scared and adults just did not feel like climbing up the steep slope for no reason. For most of a year...

David Bartholomae, and Anthony Petrosky. Boston: Bedford/ St. Martin’s, 2011. 712-713.Print. Crystal Lee “The Effects of Parental Alienation on Children” Belanger 1 In Susan Griffin’s essay, “Our Secret,’’ she talks about her secrets and she gives detailed insights into her life and ones of those that suffered through the Holocaust. The three biggest parts that she talks about is her own feelings, secrets and fears, her own experiences, the life of Heinrich Himmler, Leo, Helene, and Chief of the Nazi SS. The way that she organized her essay was very confusing and it would jump around a lot so you never really understood how everything would come together in the end. Griffin’s says “The DNA molecule is made of long, fine paired stands. These strands are helically coiled” (Griffin 379). Griffin’s tells what happens to the nucleus, and how the inner-workings of the nucleus develop into a cell which gives rise to many cells, which will eventually become an embryo. So the cell is how someone was made with and your development can be affecting you as you growing up. Baby is born with no secrets, innocent with arms wide open and then she is implying that at that point in a person’s life is the only point where...

...issues with family, friends and work. If someone told you a secret, for instance, would you promise to keep it safe, even if it meant endangering their life? Should we go against our own belief in our career and keep someone alive at all costs, no matter what their physical or mental condition is? I remember being a kid and running around telling secrets and when it got back to me it was blown way out of proportion. Those were the good days. We have grown up and things have changed but what hasn’t changed is we still have secrets in our life. There are so many reasons why we keep and pass around our secrets. Secrets can and usually do cause pain and suffering – that is why they are called secrets. One person most likely doesn’t want the secret out for one reason or another and then they allow someone close to them into their “trust field” and that person becomes vulnerable. Can you keep a secret? I will tell you the truth, I can’t. I am tell-a-phone, tell-a-graph, tell-a-Trina. If you want something to stay private … Do Not Tell Me! With my new leadership role, I had to learn to be more private. I already had several friends in the department and stepping into management was hard. I learned so much about many of my co-workers. Honoring trust didn’t require the whole truth. Little white lies had to be established. Keeping my big mouth shut was hard. I was once in the awkward position...

...动物化与自然回归 ——对《百种神秘感觉》的生态解读 Animalization and Return to Nature An Ecological Reading of The Hundred Secret Senses By QIN Yuanyuan A Thesis Submitted to the School of English and International Studies Beijing Foreign Studies University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Chinese American Literature Course Supervised by Professor Pan Zhiming June 2014 Animalization and Return to Nature A Ecological Reading of The Hundred Secret Senses I Introduction Amy Tan, born in 1952, is acclaimed for her lyrically written tales of sensibility and conflicts in Chinese-American mother-daughter relationship, in which generational and cultural divergence is highlighted. Themes of loss and reconciliation, hope and failure, friendship and familial conflict, added with mystic oriental flavor and healing power, have made Tan’s writing emblematic and well-received. Following the publication of The Joy Luck Club (1989), The Kitchen God's Wife (1991), Amy Tan’s third novel The Hundred Secret Senses (1995) again enjoys a high popularity and evokes strong responses from both readers and critics. Despite the fact that The Hundred Secret Senses still exhibits Tan’s trademarks of “a strong sense of place, a many-layered narrative, family secrets, generational conflict, Chinese lore and history”, unlike the previous two that are generally praised, this novel gets mixed opinions. Most reviewers receive the...

...when I feel so smart and productive until I’m exhausted, dehydrated overextended, overwhelmed, or otherwise ready to snap. There are still days when my instinct is to push myself to the limits for reasons I may or may not fully understand in the moment. Even though my body, mind, and spirit can take so much, I try to learn from these days as I go. Since I haven’t yet discovered the secret formula for complete balance, I’ve come up with a few simple ways to give my self a break when I’ve been pushing myself too hard. Since I like to run, I go to the gym, or I participate in some type of aerobics. By staying motivated, I can pace my self and not take on too much at one time. I allow myself a little extra sleep when I’m off of work. In order for me to recharge my self, I take long hot baths. It’s awfully hard to stress and over-think when you’re engaged in something fun and expressive. Even if it takes just five minutes, I take time to meditate throughout the day. I surround myself with positive and supportive people. Everything that I have accomplished in my life makes me feel good because I know I have worked hard to get where I am today, and I am very proud of my achievements. I have learned many things about myself through feed back from my friends, peers, and co- workers. I keep my emotions under control and I listen to what is being said. I am always open for change and this is how I have grown over the years. When working for ...

...Nicholette Marbley November 1 2013 Professor Whetstone Essay 2 Using humorous figures for an anti-bullying campaign wont work because no one will take it seriously At one point in our lives we have had our disagreements with friends. It might have gone as far as getting kicked out of a group. Its not fun being left out. Any form of bullying is not fun. Bullying has been around for ages. As longs as its been around you would have thought there would be a cure for it. If no one likes mean people, why are people so mean? Do we only pretend not to like mean people? This problem has escalated over the years, and has become more prevalent with todays technology. An example of this is seen in the scene of the movie Carrie. Carrie was a religious girl who was sheltered from wordly things. She did not know what her period was. She was taking a shower in the schools locker room when it happned. She ran over to the other girls screaming and crying. They then began to throw tampons at her. The leader of the group then began to record it and put it on youtube. The video was labled Bloody Mary. This resulted in the girl being banned from prom. On prom night she swiched the ballots so it looked liked Carrie and another boy were king and queen. When Carrie took her position on stage they poured pigs blood on her from a bucket hanging above her. They then started to play the video. Carrie took out her embarrassment and anger through her telekinesis. She then killed most of...

...WR 121 Essay 1: Diagnostic Words: 778 Truthful Lies: America’s Imbalance In the real world, statements are made, without regard for consequences. Is it possible to “unsay” something? To take it back? Rudyard Kipling said it best, “Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind.” As a child, I played a game called gossip. It was usually at a slumber party and required all the participants to sit in a circle. The first person would whisper a secret to the person beside them. That person then whispered the secret to the person beside them, but told it in their own words. The last person in the circle was to announce the secret, as they heard it. I was always astonished, not only by how much the story had changed, but by how excited the participants were to tell it. My grandmother used to say, “Be careful what you say, because once the words are out, you can’t take them back.” Although she was nobody famous, she had a firm grasp on the impact words could have on a person’s life. When I think of a drug, I think of something that changes a person, either physically, mentally, or both. Think about how you feel when you hear, or read something about another person. Your reaction is based on many things. Suppose you are a person, with little means, who struggles every day. One day you hear that someone who is not only famous, but wealthy has lost all their money. You don’t even know this person, but those words have somehow made you feel better...

...THE SECRET OF SUCCESS Be aware and apply the Seven (7) habits of effective people • Be Proactive Take initiative in life by realizing that your decisions (and how they align with life's principles) are the primary determining factor for effectiveness in your life. Take responsibility for your choices and the consequences that follow. Begin with the End in Mind Self-discover and clarify your deeply important character values and life goals. Envision the ideal characteristics for each of your various roles and relationships in life. Put First Things First A manager must manage his own person. Personally. And managers should implement activities that aim to reach the second habit. Covey says that rule two is the mental creation; rule three is the physical creation. Think Win-Win Genuinely strive for mutually beneficial solutions or agreements in your relationships. Value and respect people by understanding a "win" for all is ultimately a better long-term resolution than if only one person in the situation had got his way. Synergize Combine the strengths of people through positive teamwork, so as to achieve goals no one person could have done alone. Sharpen the Saw Balance and renew your resources, energy, and health to create a sustainable, long-term, effective lifestyle. It primarily emphasizes exercise for physical renewal, prayer (meditation, yoga, etc.) and good reading for mental renewal. It also mentions service to society for spiritual renewal. • • • • • ...
