Mythic heros are a little different than the caped protectors in spandex we think of today. In Joseph Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces he outlines the steps a character takes to becoming a hero. The question is whether or not Joseph Campbell’s depiction can be applied to the epic Beowulf. The answer to that question is no. The heroic character of Beowulf does not undergo the proper stages set forth by Campbell to be considered a hero coined by Campbell’s terms. Specifically, the stage Beowulf skipped that Campbell used was “Meeting the Goddess.” Campbell described meeting the goddess as the stage of the story where the hero finds someone who distracts them.
