Extending New Institutional Theory: Regulation and ActivityBased Costing in Portuguese Telecommunications ABSTRACT This paper investigates why a Portuguese telecommunications firm adopted activity-based costing (ABC). Theoretically it draws from New Institutional Sociology. An intensive, holistic case study revealed that ABC was implemented to improve competitiveness and efficiency. However, it was also an isomorphic response to pressures from a chain of institutions, especially its parent company, management consultants, national and European Union regulatory agencies, financial markets, and consumer associations. This private, profit-seeking firm faced institutional and economic pressures simultaneously, consistent with developments in new institutional theory. However, the nature of efficiency, its economic expression, and the impact of regulatory pressures upon departments varied according to their tasks and domains....

...Global Warming I believe that Global Warming has been here since we first started using machines, which used steam engines or combustion engines. The first type of wheeling automobile was made in 1769 that is about 250 years ago. So since the first type of ‘car’ was invented so much time ago, then we can assume that there has been carbon dioxide, smoke and steam in the atmosphere. When this happens the atmosphere breaks into little holes, through those holes the rays of the sun pass through the atmosphere, and therefore global warming is created. This is how global warming is produced, it has been present since a long time ago, and what I just went through is the process of it. “People tend to focus on the here and now. The problem is that, once global warming is something that most people can feel in the course of their daily lives, it will be too late to prevent much larger, potentially catastrophic changes.” Elizabeth Kolbert, The New Yorker, Apr 25, 2005. Kolbert, is a very successful writer, and she might not be known world wide, but she is very wise, because she wrote something seven years ago, which by now is becoming true. I feel that Global Warming is getting to a point that the whole world is about to meet him, because now only educated people know about it, and we must all know that global warming is real. As a matter of a fact one can see many reasons or facts to why Global Warming is real, and it is not only real, but also it is starting to get worse, with the...

...We need to stop and think before we open the bottle and drink. Plastic water bottles and plastic in general, is destroying our environment. Here are some simple facts to help you see my point. In 2012 32 million tons of plastic waste was generated in the U.S., and that represents close to 13 percent of the total MSW (municipal solid waste) (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2014). Out of the 32 million tons of plastic waste that was created in 2012 only 9% was recycled (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2014). Every year, about 100 billion tons of plastic are produced all over the world, less than 9% is recycled (REUSEIT, 2014). Plastic water bottles are lightweight, this makes them preferred over glass or aluminum bottles. Although, the weight difference may be only a couple of grams, it makes them easier to carry (PlasticsEurope, 2014). Because of the weight difference between plastic and glass or aluminum, plastic bottles are less expensive to transport. This saves us some natural resources and cuts down on gas emissions from the transporting vehicle (PlasticsEurope, 2014). Another benefit that manufactures’ get from using plastic bottle is clarity. The bottle is clear and this allows the end user to see any impurities that might be in the water and this acts as an assurance that the water is uncontaminated, even if it is (PlasticsEurope, 2014). Unlike glass bottles, plastic water bottles won’t shatter and this makes them safer to use because they won’t produce...

...I was born in April. Which was a surprise to my mother because I was expected to be born mid June. Being almost two months early, I was very premature. My lungs were underdeveloped and I couldn’t breathe properly. The doctors had me on all sorts of medication, hooked up to machines, but I wasn’t responding to anything. Eventually they told my parents that if I didn’t improve, I would be put on a waitlist for a lung transplant. Thankfully, my condition improved, and it wasn’t necessary. But I was *this* close, and had I not recovered, the only way I would be alive right now is if somebody had donated their lungs. We’ve heard stories like this before, but it is difficult to grasp the reality of how serious situations like this are. That is, until we realize it could actually happen to anybody. Your mom, your dad, your brother, your sister, even you. It almost happened to me. That’s why today, my central concern is organ donation; or more specifically, the lack thereof. The lack of organ donors has become a significant problem, and more people need to be taking action to put an end to it. There are so many people that could potentially be alive today if they had received organs in time. According to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network, over 121,000 in the U.S. are still waiting (optn.transplant.hrsa.gov). Instead of letting that number increase, we have the power to diminish it. To do this we need to understand the problem. We will do this by looking at what causes...

...Our Elders Pay the Price Shelly Brewster HLTH 481-905 April 2, 2014 Our Elders Pay the Price The current healthcare system is problematic in America, and the elderly population is suffering the most financially. Prescription costs are sky-rocketing and since insurance and social security do not cover all the costs, the elderly are paying out of pocket for their medications. Employees in the medical field should prescribe drugs that treat multiple symptoms, suggest substituting brand names for generic names, and navigate patients to cost effective programs. Healthcare administrators need to create a policy for medical staff that will require them to monitor and provide more financially suitable healthcare options for elderly consumers in addition to recommending lifestyle changes which will result in a decrease of medication costs. Healthcare providers need to educate consumers on the fact that prescription drugs can often times be substituted for lifestyle changes. Doctors almost always suggest a pharmaceutical solution, often times without even considering alternatives. If healthcare administrators implement the need for doctors to go beyond the “quick fix” of drugs and encourage them to prescribe lifestyle changes instead, medication costs would be nonexistent. For example, high cholesterol is an issue in our country and if left untreated it can develop into secondary problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure (or hypertension) and several other complications. More...

...issues of global warming. Some people think global warming might be just a myth while others think that global warming is happening and humans are the cause of it. One side believes that humans cause global warming, yet the other side thinks that global warming is a complete fallacy. I. Global warming is an environmental issue that is concerning a lot of people. Global warming has been an issue for many years. One area of this issue that is taking over right now is whether global warming is due to human actions or if global warming is due to natural cause there is a big argument over it. Some people believe global warming is due to human actions of pollutants such as burning fossil fuel, coal, and oil, human finger prints, and deforestation; while other people believe it is a natural cause and global warming is just a theory and nothing else. A. According to some people and scientists there is a huge impact of this environmental issue on the world and something needs to be done right now in order to try and stop or slow down global warming. On the other hand, some people and scientists believe that humans do not cause global warming; instead it is a part of history and would occur with or without the help of humans. B. Everyone agrees, from scientists to nonscientists that the Earth is definitely getting warmer. It is a matter of opinion of the cause and the effects in the future. One myth states that it is warming because of humans, while the truth is that it...

...the death of the patients. Therefore, people should not become organ donors. One of the main claims that supporters for organ donors give, is that donors will be saving lives. However, it is not fair to put one life at risk just to save another one. There are many myths that clearly state that doctors will not do their best they can to save a life in order to obtain patients organs. And let me tell you, this myths are true. There is a particular case of a patient named Colleen Burns who was not dead, however she was falsely pronounced dead by doctors claiming that she had suffered “cardiopulmonary arrest” and “irreversible brain damage”. This gave doctors the okay to start slicing away even when the woman’s heart was still beating, According to Sydney Lupkin in the article “Patient Wakes Up as Doctors Get Ready to Remove Organs” published by ABC News, “doctors had inaccurately diagnosed Burns with irreversible brain damage and ignored nurses who'd noticed signs that Burns was improving: She curled her toes when touched, flared her nostrils and moved her mouth and tongue. She was also breathing on her own even though she was on a respirator.” Like Colleen, there are many other reported victims who have been about to get killed by the same person who is supposed to save their...

...Asmita Patel Organic Chem 211 Professor Stoneking Acai Berry Research Paper 06/07/13 Organic Acai Berries: Are They Really Just a Fruit? Acai berries have been around for many generations. They recently became popular a few years back because many people were using them as a weight loss supplements. There were many ads and commercials going around talking about how these berries are a great way to loose weight. Because of this particular media, I became interested in them. I was looking for something to help me loose weight that I had gained over the years, and a friend pointed out these new supplements that were trending for weight loss (McHugh). At first when I heard about them I didn’t think it was going to work, especially since supplements for weight loss don’t really work that well. While doing my general research I found out that not only was it used for weight loss but many other uses as well. The main use for it in the states was for weight loss and it was a hit or miss type of deal. Learning about the acai berry because of weight loss intrigued me and finding out it was an organic compound worked out perfectly for the organic chemistry research paper. The acai berry was first discovered in the Amazon Rainforest in South America by a tribe that lived in the rainforest. The people of the Amazon used the berry as a main food source in their diet because they soon realized how much of an impact the nutrients and antioxidants in the berry affected their health...

...Aida P. Yap WG101 4.22.12 Assignment 3 Women In The Pacific During my investigation for this assignment, I visited the ABC Store and the Dollar Discount Store at the mall. I thought about going to a place that was common and popular for many of the tourists that come to Guam, these two stores seem to fit the bill perfectly. As I began my searching’s for representations of Pacific Island women, I was caught slightly off guard by the things that I found. I never really paid much attention before but I was surprised at how difficult it was to actually find products that had representations of Pacific Island Women. I couldn’t help but think it was strange that a tourist store on Guam didn’t have many products that actually showcased the island. I searched for representations of different Pacific women from Fiji, Chuuk, and even Chamorro women but, in reality, there were actually very few things. Majority of the products only portrayed the Hawaiian culture. When I did find some representations of “Guam Women”, it was on this little bag of banana chips and on the front of the bag was a small cartoon rendition of what I assume the manufacturer tried to pass off as an Island Woman of Guam. She wore a coconut bra and a grass skirt. All I could remember thinking was, “What part of this is Chamorro? What part of this is even Guam? All I see are Hawaiian representations. “ Instead of serving to “Polenesianize” the diverse women of the South Pacific, as Berno and Jones stated , I...

...In the 1980s the Fairness Doctrine put an end to radio and television broadcasts. This was done to prevent showing the news on just history. The news didn't gain any profit from this change. Wilson recited from Canon, "In the 1950s, the three major networks (ABC, NBC, and CBS) only allowed 30 minutes of news broadcasts, and these broadcasts were presented from a moderate perspective, in order to appeal to more Americans" (210). The Fairness Doctrine was abolished in late 1987 (History). Wilson also states from Canon that, "technology has created cable news and the Internet, and many media outlets find their markets at the ideological extremes" (210). Polarization is extremely relevant in the media of America. Cannon stated, "A political "battle" between conservative talk radio (Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, among others) and the liberal National Public Radio" (211). The media will stop at nothing to get the public attention. Wilson referenced Canon mass media quote, "Once the media...

...animated movie for next summer; he loved the story but complained that some jokes were stale. Today he's holding a four-hour brainstorming session about Mickey Mouse, looking for ways to keep the 71-year-old rodent relevant. (One idea: a skateboarding Mickey.) Later, he'll watch Peter Jennings' newscast on Disney-owned ABC and surf the Internet to see how the company's Websites stack up. Is this any way to run the world's most troubled entertainment giant? After all, as Eisner sweats the details, earnings are dropping, top executives are defecting, and Disney stock is plunging like a ride down Splash Mountain. "Maybe I'm crazy," Eisner says, "but I don't consider this a crisis. I don't think our problems are in the fabric of our company. And I don't have my head in the sand." Sitting down for a two-hour interview, he admits mistakes. He says, for instance, that he should have settled former studio chief Jeffrey Katzenberg's suit against the company earlier to avoid a "parade of horrors" (see box). And he concedes that the company has sustained real damage: "It's like a train wreck, only nobody got killed." But Eisner denies that he has lost his touch. "The criticisms of me and Disney today," says the 57-year-old chief executive, "are as shortsighted as were the praises of me and Disney in the high economic times." Sunday nights on ABC, Michael Eisner--celebrated CEO, business magazine cover boy, and author of his own life story--still hosts The Wonderful World of Disney. The rest...

...British influence on the Australian culture British settlers arrived in Australia in 1788 and the extent of the British influence is still evident today. The British Union Jack features predominantly on our national flag and the Queen is Australia's Head of State. British models also form the basis of Australia's legal and political systems, as well providing our national language. Up until World War II, Britain remained the dominating cultural influence in Australia. Britons also dominated the make-up of Australian society - most of Australia's citizens were either born in Britain, or had British descendants. In the years following the war, British subjects were encouraged to migrate to Australia under an 'assisted package' scheme, which helped with the cost of migrating to Australia and provided housing and employment options upon arrival. Between 1945 and 1972, over one million British migrants settled in Australia. Before 1945, many people, including Australians themselves, considered Australia to be nothing more than a British colony; a nation whose national identity was relatively indistinct from the British. During this period of Australia's history, our modes of entertainment, food, fashion, sporting culture and our social values and attitudes were largely dictated by British culture. American influence on the Australian culture One of the most significant changes to have taken place in Australian society since the end of WWII, however, has been its drift towards...

...In today’s society suicide is still a topic of taboo. According to John Brogden this is because suicide is an extraordinarily difficult issue to talk about - even in a modern, liberal society like Australia, and it's even harder to understand. “It is, and will always be, hard to understand why a 17-year-old with everything to live for takes her own life. Or why a father of two children thinks the only way forward is to kill himself. Or why a grandparent, who has enjoyed a rich and full life and still has so much yet to experience, commits suicide.”(Brogden, 2010). However David Webb, an Australian suicide survivor turned suicidology scholar states that ‘the taboo around suicide creates the silence... it's toxic because I don't know of any public health issue that has been resolved by not talking about it.” There comes a time in everyone’s life were they will have to deal with a horrific experience, whether this is as a direct result of their own actions or as the result of someone else’s choices. The most important outcome from these experiences is how someone deals with the consequences. There are many avenues for people to gain professional help. One such avenue is a local GP, a GP will be able to refer you to a local counsellor or psychiatrist that is often free through Medicare. All dealings with a GP and or the counsellor is confidential with the exception of the threat of self-harm issues. However, if help is needed outside of hours there are twenty four hour hotlines...
