OxyContin was supposed to be a wonder drug, able to manage pain to the point of increased movement and productivity in those who took it as prescribed. The problem, as we all know, is that the level of misuse was off the charts. The time released version of OxyContin was designed to deliver a slow, consistent dose of pain medication to the user over a 12 hour period. However, for those misusing the drug for a high, this just presented an opportunity to crush up the pills and ‘snort’ them, thereby delivering a super dose of the opioid. What once was a problem predominantly in the southern counties of Maine started to climb farther and farther north as the paper mills and the towns they supported rolled up the sidewalks and shut their doors for good. Suddenly, the mill workers, lobstermen, and construction workers were out of a job. The loss of employment led to the loss of affordable insurance. The lack of insurance made previously affordable medications more expensive, sometimes by quite a margin. The loss of programs and activities for youth due to hard economic times contributed to the rise of drug abuse among the younger, school-aged generation. It examines a cross section of markets, determining whether behavior is nonmonotonic in market size. Under some conditions, investment levels will be monotone in market size if firms do not invest to deter entry. Strategic investments to deter entry, however, may result in nonmonotonic investment because they are unnecessary in small markets, and impossible in large ones. Consistent with an entry-deterrence motivation is the finding that incumbents in medium-sized markets advertise less prior to patent expiration.
