...ANNEXURE ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Case Study 1: Technology changing the face of education ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Technology is changing rapidly with new innovations and discoveries being made across the world. The change has touched our lives, directly and indirectly. One of the core aspects of an individual’s life is education and today, technology through the availability of expansive data and information is bringing about a revolution in this world. Technological advances like e-learning, internet; educational cds, digital classrooms, etc. are being embraced by several educational institutions to provide the students with large amounts of relevant information. The institutions today can have classes with lecturers from across the world or even virtual classrooms where skills and learning can be put to practical use to the extent unimaginable a few years back. Also, the delivery of the information through these mediums is in a much more interactive and creative manner than textbooks, resulting in there being a shift in the culture of learning from ‘memorizing’ to ‘understanding’. The usage of technology has already become an integral part of higher education and has been rapidly trickling down to touch the students at the beginner level. Recently, a school in Mumbai informed all the students from medium school onwards to purchase...

...really interested in something, I get bored and lazy and start to procrastinate and not give it my all. School is a prime example. It’s tedious and I loathe it. I achieve the minimum just to get by. With this job, there are so many avenues to explore and discover. I’m also a busy body and love to stick my nose in other peoples’ business. This is why this is the perfect job for me. According to the CASA case study there are a lot of formal networks being utilized. Since CASA is a non-profit agency, let’s take a look at the top of the list for the formal networks. The agency has to get its funding from somewhere. So where should we turn to for that? There is state or federal funding, and then charity as in donations, fund-raising, also grants from other organizations. Then we take a look at the facility itself. Office managers are the ones that make sure the building is up and running like it should be. They make sure that the residents have a clean and safe environment to temporarily call home. Also employed are four case managers and a case manager supervisor. “Case management focuses on access to...

...University started off without a student portal and they didn’t have a single sign on. The students have had a hard time trying to find the information and services they needed and trying to remember which user ID and password to use to access the systems. Each student had separate accounts for email, the VLE and for access to their student record. University of West London wanted to create a platform that would allow students to interact with each other in a safe, secure and academically driven environment.” (UCISA, 2012). Rather than develop a basic gateway for students to access the institution’s services, the University decided to build a personalized, interactive, social platform allowing students to combine social learning with academic study. The staff was established to explore options for collaborative working. There were three different approaches that were being considered: an in house developed bespoke solution; an off the shelf on premise solution and a solution hosted entirely in the Cloud. The in-house bespoke solution was ruled out because of the high development, support and infrastructure costs. It would also take too long to implement as the University had set a go live target date of the last week of August 2012, to coincide with the start of enrolment. The off the shelf solution hosted was ruled about because of the high infrastructure, support and maintenance costs. Most of the off the shelf solutions also lacked the modern messaging and collaboration tools that...

...This past week, I read three social media case studies on Lady Gaga, the Ford Fiesta Movement, and the Greenpeace protests against Nestle` in the palm oil controversy. After reading “Lady Gaga: Born this way?” I was impressed by her utilization of social media to successfully interact with her fans. Her passion for her time-consuming work and building a following on social media took over many aspects of her personal life, prohibiting her from being able to own a home or even have a boyfriend. Growing up, Lady Gaga took full advantage of her privileged upbringing by receiving the best education and seizing opportunities that supported her musical talents. Once she was discovered, she actively built her image as an artist through the Internet and social media. Her success was attributable to connecting and interacting with her fans through websites such as You Tube, Facebook, and Twitter. She was able to build a bond with her fans that has not been matched by any other musician or artist. I was intrigued by her success outside of the music industry that seemed directly related to the social footprint that she built for herself. The case study talks about the “360 deal,” where music companies now share a portion of revenues from all aspects of an artist’s business. While I believe this to be a great business model for the music industry, and Lady Gaga has been tremendously successful in this model, I think it is premature to imply that her reinvigoration of outside brands...

...BCO1102 Information Systems for Business 2014 Semester 1 Prepared by Paul Darbyshire Prepared by Paul Darbyshire Welcome Welcome to BCO1102 Information Systems for Business for Semester 1, 2014. For the vast majority of you it will be a compulsory unit of study as it is part of the Business Core in all undergraduate Bachelor of Business degrees. The major focus of this unit is on how computer- based information systems can support decision making in organizations and businesses. Those decisions often need to be made by professionals who come from discipline areas you are studying such as accounting, management, information systems or marketing. One of the most important elements of an information system is people, so all of us need to know what role we can play and what role information and communication technologies (ICT) can play in supporting decisions. This unit will look at the theoretical side of information systems as well as personal productivity tools such as spread sheets and databases. In addition we will look at global trends in information systems and in particular the emerging use of Cloud Computing and Social Networking, which is sometimes called Web 2.0. The unit of study requires the textbook Introduction to Information Systems by Rainer, Prince and Cegielski 5th Edition. The textbook is used for the theory and some of the practical work in tutorials. All reading for this subject during the semester is assigned from this textbook. Feedback from previous...

Overall greeting card sales had been contracting in the U.S. for some years and negative growth was expected in the next five years to 2015 (Exhibit 4). Hallmark was the largest card company in the U.S. that was privately owned by the Hall family with $4 billion of revenues. The organization had expanded its operations in more than hundred nations and thus it was well-diversified geographically. Overall, the U.S. card industry was contracting with 9% reduction in last six years and the trend was expected to continue with a minimum of 4% decline over next 4 years and 16% in a worst case scenario. Major cause and diver of this decline in demand was changing social interaction norms and advent of alternative forms of communications through social networking and digital imaging. Increase in use of these alternatives by the populace to express their love and keep in touch with their close ones was reducing the need to send paper based...

...Krystal Bante Case Study Chapter 2 1. In the beginning, Pandora tried to get music subscribers by giving people 10 free hours, then asking them to pay $36 a month after that for the service. Of course no-one was willing to pay so much for a service that they could get for free by switching on an FM radio. After that model failed they tried several other options until they decided to use the “freemium” model they are using today. With a freemium service the basic service is available for everyone for free, but with strict limitations in bandwidth and ads between songs which results in a lower quality listening experience. The premium service is priced at just $36 a year, 1/12 of their previous asking price. Three dollars a month is much easier for a consumer to justify. The premium service offers higher bandwidth songs and no advertising. 2. What Pandora does for its customers is provide access to music through the “Music Genome Project.” This project was started by the founders of Pandora and offers a way to classify music so that similar music by different artists will group together into what they call a personalized radio station. The music is evaluated by professional musicians for genre, and then within each genre 200-500 different data points are set for each song by the music professional. A function is used to identify the distance between songs so that similar songs can be included in a customer's playlist. A user can apply additional weights to promote or demote...

...Impact of advertisement on consumers purchasing behaviour – Case study of Black Berry phone advertisement "They are the Black Berry boys" Index 1. Impact of advertisement on consumers purchasing behaviour 2. Case study of Black Berry phone advertisement "They are the Black Berry boys" 3. Conclusion 1. Impact of advertisement on consumers purchasing behaviour Every organization, or rather, Brand, invests a lot of capital on marketing, a major chunk of which is spent on making ads and this creates an influence on the consumer. Getting an iconic celeb like Amitabh Bachchan to speak about a product like Navratna Hair Oil, it seems like a piece of cake nowadays. But, to how much extent does these ads actually affect the consumers? Do they actually buy a product just because their favourite film-star is endorsing it? Is it possible that a product can change its image on the consumers overnight, just because of the flashy ads they just released? As being incorporated or associated with the Marketing process, advertising finds its position in every organization. Advertising can be defined as another strategy as an approach towards competitive advantage. Various advertising concepts are in the stream of the media and papers but still there is a little evidence that advertising can significantly help the organization boosts its performance. In terms of sales, it is true that the application of the marketing...

Class discussion About the Case: The case is about a person named Randy Mott. He is known as a rock star in IT business. He not only understood information technology systems but knew how to use them to improve business. He believed and showed it was possible that IT should not only support the business, but help to improve its efficiency and boost the bottom line. He started his career at Wal-mart and introduced the data ware house concept at Wal-Mart with which they were able to analyze buying trends. Wal-Mart was a pioneer in this as no other company had this capability. He became CIO at Dell where helped he group 100 separate systems into a single data warehouse system. Mott started at HP in order to turn HP from the bloated leviathan it had become into a lean, mean, agile organization. He took several initiatives at HP. We are going to explore the initiatives taken at HP through the questions that we are answering for this case study. Questions we are trying to answer: 1. In what ways is Randy Mott trying to change HP’s structure and the way it works? 2. In what ways has he been trying to change HP’s culture? 3. Go to the internet and find some articles on HP recent performance. How have the changes he made affected HP’s competitive advantage and performance? 1. In what ways is...

...Case Study: Facebook 1) In my country of origin, Morocco, Facebook is used primarily by people from 15 to 35 years old. The social network played a big part in the outburst of social revolts referred to as “Arab Spring”, since it was one of the only mediums for the people to keep their freedom of speech in times of tyranny. But it also has a couple drawbacks, in my opinion, the major one being the lack of control of users over their own personal data. This can represent a big inconvenience in some situations such as applying for a job. Nowadays, with employers making sure to search deeper and deeper into their recruits’ past and present social networking activities, any mistake a person might have made, even a long time ago, could come back and haunt him for the rest of his life. I think that the social network, by promoting freedom of speech and allowing people to keep in touch with their loved ones, even though in today’s globalized world it’s easier than ever to be far from them, is a great tool for the people of a developing country like Morocco. However in years to come, the emphasis should be on the challenge that is personal data encryption and protection, as well as user awareness on theses issues. 2) Faced with the need to define their approach to global expansion, Facebook chose to remain loyal to its values, in order to keep their international credibility as well as to justify their extraordinary IPO ambitions. The company is looking for market with a...
