Phobias

In 2014 there were more than 400 recognised phobias by psychologists.
Good morning ladies and gentlemen today i am going to talk to you about phobias.

So what is a phobia? A phobia is an extreme fear of or to something. A phobia is learned through heaps of fear resulting in a phobia that lasts for a long time.
Where did the word phobia came from? It came from the latin word phobos which meant fear and a lot of fear and a tad more fear.
There are three main types of fears: specific phobias, social phobia and agoraphobia.Specific phobias are ones that are phobias with living creatures, for example spiders, bats, snakes and flying.These are some of the phobias under specific phobias. Social phobias, these phobias are phobias that come in when you are with friends or even at school.
Agoraphobia, this is a type of phobia that makes you scared of yourself in situations where there is no escape, it may include traveling in buses, cars, planes, large shopping malls.This may cause panic disorder.
Some phobias originate from traumatic childhood experiences whilst others we are not sure about.

How can you get rid of your phobia?
Well you can have exposure therapy which is the most effective way, but you can also have hypnosis treatment, but that is not the best because people have been know to do the opposite and be so confident it nearly kills them!
Here are a few facts to show you that phobias are not always bad they can be good also.

Nearly 17% of people with social phobias develop depression. The majority of people use medications, but around 30% use illegal drugs or alcohol.
Approximately 4 to 5 percent of the U.S. population has one or more clinically significant phobias in a given year.
3.Specific phobias occur in people of all ages. The average age of onset for social phobia is between 15 and 20 years of age, although it can often begin in childhood.
4.If specific phobias exist in adolescence, they have a greater chance of persisting in early adulthood.

Alektorophobia- Fear of chickens.
Bibliophobia- Fear of books.
Caligynephobia- Fear of beautiful women.
Didaskaleinophobia- Fear of going to school.
Entomophobia- Fear of insects.
Frigophobia- Fear of cold or cold things.
Gerontophobia- Fear of old people or of growing old.
Hypsiphobia- Fear of height.
Ichthyophobia- Fear of fish.
Japanophobia- Fear of Japanese.
Kakorrhaphiophobia- Fear of failure or defeat.
Lachanophobia- Fear of vegetables.
Mageirocophobia- Fear of cooking.
Noctiphobia- Fear of the night.
Papaphobia- Fear of the Pope.

Tachophobia- Fear of speed.
Urophobia- Fear of urine or urinating.
Vitricophobia- Fear of step-father.
Wiccaphobia: Fear of witches and witchcraft.

Zemmiphobia- Fear of the great mole rat. The reason I missed out Y and Q is because there is no phobias starting with Y or Q.
Why do people develop phobias?
According to the scientific american.com, they state that people develop phobias because people have a natural reaction, but when you have a phobia you have less of that reaction timing so that makes you scared of whatever is around you.

Nearly 21% of us humans have a specific phobia whether flying or heights.
Just imagine if we all had a serious phobia the world would be absolute chaos!

Phobias are a type of fear that can cause death, brain damage and much much more .
