The double bottom line refers to two bottom lines, one is the ability of a nonprofit organization to be able to pursue its mission and its success be measured in its ability to achieve that mission, and second is the financial bottom line which is to maximize profit in order to increase the organizations value. Nonprofit managers often have to deal with the organizational trade-offs between mission, and the acquisition of resources. The success of nonprofit managers must be measured by both lines because nonprofit organizations rely on both bottom lines. Nonprofit organizations are born from a need that people are seeking to remedy, for most nonprofits this need tends to become its mission, their very reason for existing. Nonprofits are defined

...1. How do the proposed Social Impact Bonds work? Social Impact Bonds are developed as a risk-free way for government to pursue social programs. The process involves five participants: governments, intermediaries, investors, service providers and independent evaluators. Firstly, governments define problems that they want to address. In order to show the feasibility of the decision, governments need to clarify several issues, such as the target population and their need. Also, they are required to analyze the budget and identify an appropriate outcome. After that, governments need to enter a contractual agreement with an intermediary. The intermediary will find outside investors such as banks and individuals to invest in the program. It also needs to hire a non-profit service provider to conduct the program. Then, the independent evaluator will judge whether the outcome meets the standard or not. If the outcome of the program is satisfying and reach the standard of the appropriate outcome that has been set by governments before, governments will repay investors with required return as the result of the successful program (Pettus, 2013). 2. How should Social Finance structure the financial instrument: as a bond? As equity? As some hybrid? In my opinion, the way that Social Finance structures the financial instrument depends on the aims of investors that are attracted. There are three types of investors of Social Impact Bonds. ...environment and our economy; it is a choice between prosperity and decline” (“Sustainable Development Strategies”, 2009). Sustainability means the balance of three things which are steady business, society and friendly environment. In other words, businesses must show crucial responsibility in terms of environmental impacts and social responsibilities. Consequently, businesses must utilize natural resources carefully, and the economic growth and employment rate of businesses must be increased (“Understanding Sustainability”, n.d.). Therefore, sustainability is an aim of businesses. The Triple Bottom Line or TBL is a significant tool advocating sustainability goals. The concept of TBL emphasizes three things, which are healthy communities (people), clean environment (planet) and stable profitability (profit) (“Slaper & Hall”, n.d.). In contrast with the past, many businesses, nonprofit organizations and government entities tend to follow this guideline. Home Depot is one of the best examples of companies which are following the TBL standard. Home Depot is the world biggest home improvement retailer (“Did You Know”, n.d.). The company was established by Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank in 1978. The first two stores opened on June 22, 1979, in Atlanta, Georgia. Today, Home Depot has approximately 2,200 branches around the United States. There are 40,000 diverse kinds of home improvement products, appliances, garden supplies and building materials (“Stores, Products, and Services”...

Talent Management

...(1)Nonprofit organizations deliver critical services, and it is important to devote maximum resources to supporting your cause. That is why it makes sense to ensure your staff and volunteer resources are operating with maximum efficiency. In the nonprofit sector, creating a competitive compensation and benefits strategy is important to attract talent, but developing a total rewards package may be more important. “Employees nowadays are looking at the whole package: ‘What’s my base salary, do I have incentives, what are my benefits, can I telecommute, can I have flex time, can I have a relaxed dress code and is it family-friendly?’” Glantz said. “[If] a not-for-profit can offer what’s considered an attractive total rewards package, [it’s] going to help that company.” The argument now is that these intangibles need to be measured and monitored, and subsequently tied to the bottom line. Re-defining the bottom to include intangibles such as leadership practices, organizational capabilities, and the ability to attract talented people is necessary. In addition, as organizations continue to automate business processes using technology, in order to remain competitive against others that are doing the same, they must now focus on their talent. Additionally, though talent can be cultivated and developed, it can also leave the organization, become sick, de-motivated, and perhaps influence others to behave in ways unfavorable for the organization. Worst of all, talent can deliver the “double-whammy”...

The social enterprises seem blur the boundary between for-profit and not-for-profit in the objects, while they don’t break though the distinction between for-profit organization and not-for-profit organization, and the rules applied respectively. However the social enterprises can enjoy some special treatment, not base on the form of organization, but on the social benefit of their mission. Bren&Jerry Case Study

...social enterprise and social entrepreneurship.3 It was a for-profit corporation that seemingly did not put profits first. Rather, it pursued, in the parlance, a “double bottom” line, seeking to advance progressive social goals, while still yielding an acceptable financial return for investors. It advanced its social mission in many ways, such as by committing 7.5% of its profits to a charitable foundation; conducting in-store voter registration; and buying ingredients from suppliers who employed disadvantaged populations.4 Ben & Jerry’s founders, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, held out their double bottom line approach (they called it the “double-dip”) as a model for others who wished to “Lead With [their] Values and Make Money, Too.”5 * Professor of Law at Indiana University School of Law—Indianapolis. ** Professor of Law at Indiana University School of Law—Indianapolis and Professor of Philanthropic Studies at the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy. † Thanks to the organizers of the symposium “Corporate Creativity: The Vermont L3C & Other Developments in Social Entrepreneurship,” and the editors of this Article: Merrill Bent, Emily Montgomery and Sofia Yazykova at the Vermont Law Review. Modeling the Adoption and Use of Social Media by Nonprofit Organization

...New Media & Society, forthcoming Modeling the adoption and use of social media by nonprofit organizations Seungah Nah; Gregory D. Saxton Seungahn Nah and Gregory D. Saxton. (forthcoming). Modeling the adoption and use of social media by nonprofit organizations. New Media & Society, forthcoming. Abstract: This study examines what drives organizational adoption and use of social media through a model built around four key factors – strategy, capacity, governance, and environment. Using Twitter, Facebook, and other data on 100 large US nonprofit organizations, the model is employed to examine the determinants of three key facets of social media utilization: 1) adoption, 2) frequency of use, and 3) dialogue. We find that organizational strategies, capacities, governance features, and external pressures all play a part in these social media adoption and utilization outcomes. Through its integrated, multidisciplinary theoretical perspective, this study thus helps foster understanding of which types of organizations are able and willing to adopt and juggle multiple social media accounts, to use those accounts to communicate more frequently with their external publics, and to build relationships with those publics through the sending of dialogic messages. Keywords: social media, new media, nonprofit organizations, Facebook, Twitter, technology adoption and use, diffusion of innovation, dialogue, organization-public relations Modeling the Adoption and Use of Social Media 2 ...

Empowering Women in Business - the Glass Ceiling

...economies successfully evolve, and cycles of scarcity are broken (Coleman 13). However, the challenges are still strikingly large. In the Middle East, sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, particularly, persistent gender gaps keep females from being really productive members of society (Coleman 13). Entrenched sex prejudice remains a leading feature of life for the majority of the world’s bottom two billion people, helping sustain the gulf between the most deprived and everyone else on the planet (Coleman 13). Narrowing that gulf requires the involvement of the international major organizations. Not simply does the global private sector have more money than some governments organizations, but it can use crucial leverage with its popular labels and by expanding promises of investment and employment. Some organizations already promote initiatives focused on women as part of their corporate programs (Coleman 13). But the really transformative shift - for global businesses and for females internationally – will happen when the organizations recognize that empowering women positively influences their bottom lines (Coleman 13). The Glass Ceiling The impassable obstacles between female employees and the executive suite were reported in the report issued by the Glass Ceiling Commission in 1995 (Johns). The glass ceiling is a concept, which was initially introduced in the 1980s (Johns). In fact, it is a metaphor for the artificial obstacles, which prevent females and minorities from climbing...
