A data link allows for both communication and data transfer between the UAS and the controlling ground station. UAS utilize 3 types of communication data links which are Line of Sight (LOS), Beyond line of Sight (BLOS), and the Technical Data Communication link. The LOS link can operate on different frequency bands, but it also needs two units, the UAS and the ground station. Each of these units also need to have directional antennas that are compatible with point to point high speed communication systems. LOS link’s biggest set back is it’s range which isn’t very far compared to the other two, but it can be extended depending upon the antennas used and the environmental conditions (hills, weather, other UAS used etc). BLOS is different in that it uses satellites to …show more content…
It should also be noted that this type operates at a lower bandwidth than the others. It is because of this lower bandwidth that technical data communication link’s ranges are further than LOS, but they are shorter than BLOS. Communication data links are not a zero defect technology and do fare some challenge. These issues include power attenuation, Dopper effect on their spectral efficiency, as well as signal loss due to specific channel characteristics. The type of communications data link incorporated into a UAS will be dependent upon what the UAS will be used for. While a recreational hobbyist may opt for a LOS link as his/her best choice, the same cannot be said for that of a military UAS which will require longer and more reliable signals. For my UAS, I have elected to use the SkyHopper One data link. It’s key features include a 2 kilometer LOS range, non-line of sight capability, broadcase, multicast, and unicast transmission modes, data encryption, broadband link with real-time full HD 1080P video, light weight construction and a plug-and-play
