ABSTRACT: This report, talks describes a lab that was focused on carrying out a method for the synthesis of secondary alcohols. It used nucleophilic Grignard reagent 1-methylbutylmagnesium Bromide, and the electrophilic carbonyl carbon of an aldehyde propanal to create 4-methyl-3-heptanol.

Introduction/ Purpose
In this lab we took it the addition of nucleophilic Grignard reagent 1-methylbutylmagnesium Bromide, to the electrophillic carbonyl carbon of an aldehyde propanal is described. 4-methyl-3-heptanol is produced, which was a 2 degree alcohol. Both primary alcohols and secondary alcohols can be obtained through this process in different ways. To produce a Primary alcohol the aldehyde that has to be used is formaldehyde. Secondary …show more content…
Then place 0.36 g of magnesium (small pieces) in a 3.0 mL conical vial and add a crystal of iodine and 100 mL of anhydrous ether to the vial. Add a magnetic spin into the vial. Then take a separate vial and put 125 mL of 2-Bromopentane and 300 mL of anhydrous ether in it. Dropwise (6-8) using a syringe place the 2-bromopentane and anhydrous ether solution into the vial with the iodine, magnesium and anhydrous ether through a pasteur pipet with sodium sulfate and glass wool every five minutes while on heat and stir. Put 100 mL of anhydrous ether into a 300 mL vial and put it in the vial that is on heat once the liquid is out of the syringe. Then heat for 15 more minutes. Put 50 mL of propanol into a 300 mL conical vial along with 100 mL of anhydrous in the solution. Stir for 5 minutes then allow to cool. Add 2 go 3 drops of distilled water and stir. Add 1 drop of 3 M HCl and allow to stand at room temperature for 5 minutes. Test with litmus paper to test that it is slightly acidic. Remove the magnetic spine and set aside. With a pasteur pipet, transfer the aqueous layer to a new vial then wash the layer with three 0.5 mL portions of diethyl ether three different times. Wash off the magnetic spin with the first portion. Once this is all done, dry the ether solution but putting it through a filter pasteur pipet with sodium sulfate and glass

...Pentachlorophenol (PCP) in wood treatment 1.Introduction Wood is a hard, fibrous structural tissue found in the stems and roots of trees and other woody plants. It has been used for thousands of years for both fuel and as a construction material. It is an organic material, a natural composite of cellulose fibers (which are strong in tension) embedded in a matrix of lignin which resists compression. Wood is sometimes defined as only the secondary xylem in the stems of trees or it is defined more broadly to include the same type of tissue elsewhere such as in the roots of trees or shrubs. In a living tree it performs a support function, enabling woody plants to grow large or to stand up by themselves. It also mediates the transfer of water and nutrients to the leaves and other growing tissues. Wood may also refer to other plant materials with comparable properties, and to material engineered from wood, or wood chips or fiber. The Earth contains about one trillion tonnes of wood, which grows at a rate of 10 billion tonnes per year. As an abundant, carbon-neutral renewable resource, woody materials have been of intense interest as a source of renewable energy. In 1991, approximately 3.5 billion cubic meters of wood were harvested. Dominant uses were for furniture and building construction. The wood-preserving industry treats lumber with various chemicals to protect against insect damage and decay. Chemically preserved wood is used in products for outdoor use such as railway ties...
