...From Number Crunching to Nursing Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements in the course 401: Career Pathway Assessment in the School of Nursing Old Dominion University NORFOLK, VIRGINIA Fall, 2012 From Number Crunching to Nursing Introduction As a child, I had often thought about what it would be like to be a nurse. However, life led me down a different path as I obtained my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (B.S.B.A) in Accounting from Appalachian State University in 1996. After years of struggling to find contentment with my career path, I finally settled into a career as a real estate broker. In this position, I found I really had a passion for helping people. While the real estate market was slowly turning into a desolate wasteland, my desire for becoming a nurse was starting to rekindle. In the meantime, I had become pregnant. Going into the hospital for my fourth standard induction, I felt scared as any mother would but confident in how things would go. After all, it wasn’t my first go around. When the induction started at midnight, I anticipated getting a good night’s rest and then welcoming my new bundle of joy in the am. However, just one hour later, I was rushed in for an emergency c-section. The next morning, holding my beautiful son, the physician made this statement “If it wasn’t for your nurse going above and beyond what she needed to do with her watching the monitors for 10 minutes longer than our protocol...

...1 Running header: CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS CRUNCHING NUMBERS Abstract The public sector faces complex challenges when allocating financial resources in the most productive way in accordance with government policies. The capital budget process in the public sector explores a variety of objectives to determine the best financial impact for the federal, state, and local government entities. The process chooses capital projects from a number of potential options based on several factors such as payback periods, internal rate of return, and the net present value for each project. Each factor should work together effectively to ensure the greatest return in the least amount of time. This paper will focus on determining the best financial outcome for a capital budget using these methods and calculations. To gain an understanding of the capital budget process, Project A and B will be analyzed to determine which project is best for a city council. The calculations will also help to justify each project and if both can be used simultaneously. 2 CRUNCHING NUMBERS Payback Period (Project A and B) The period for payback is the technique which is used measure the length of time that a project recoups the initial investment of the firm. Following the technique, the profits before depreciation (cash flow) is the amount of time required to repay an investment, while accumulating investment returns (Morrell, 2007). The shorter payback period is preferred because the investment costs...

...on management accounting. According to this article the business role that management accountants play will be significantly different in the future. While this change is inevitable it is unclear how many of today's accountants will be able or willing to adjust to the change and conform to what is being called "New Accounting." Accountants in the future will have to play a much larger role in their organization. Becoming a change agent, someone who can help accelerate change in an organization. This is a problem for most accountants who are used to doing the same job year after year with little to no change. Since the introduction of the computer management has recognized that the PC can perform in much less time many of the tedious number crunching activities accountants spend hours doing. As a result of this accountants are being asked to do more and become analytical and proactive, looking into the future and joining with management in making and taking responsibility for all those tough decisions. Management expects the accounting department in addition to its role...

...accidental variations of Napier's original logarithms. Their real significance was not recognized until later. The earliest natural logarithms occur in 1618. It can’t be said too often: a logarithm is nothing more than an exponent. The basic concept of logarithms can be expressed as a shortcut…….. Multiplication is a shortcut for Addition: 3 x 5 means 5 + 5 + 5 Exponents are a shortcut for Multiplication: 4^3 means 4 x 4 x 4 Logarithms are a shortcut for Exponents: 10^2 = 100. The present definition of the logarithm is the exponent or power to which a stated number, called the base, is raised to yield a specific number. The logarithm of 100 to the base 10 is 2. This is written: log10 (100) = 2. Before pocket calculators — only three decades ago, but in “student years” that’s the age of dinosaurs — the answer was simple. You needed logs to compute most powers and roots with fair accuracy; even multiplying and dividing most numbers were easier with logs. Every decent algebra books had pages and pages of log tables at the back. The invention of logs in the early 1600s fueled the scientific revolution. Back...

... he said to himself. However, once he started walking he heard it again. It sounded like somebody was walking over leaves. The crunching was getting closer. It was getting louder. It was getting faster. He started to walk faster. Then, he started running. The crunching was getting louder and louder every step he took. He heard a growling noise behind him. It sounded like it was a dog, but he couldn’t tell. Then, when the beast stepped into the moonlight he realized it was his dog, Bear. He realized that Bear had followed him from his house. Bear was a black lab with a white spot on its left paw, and a white spot on its right ear. Bear was just over three years old. James had gotten him about two years ago. He told Bear to go home. Bear whimpered, but then started walking back into the shadows. After a minute or two, James heard a whimper, and then a squeal. There was silence. “Bear”, James called. He heard nothing. He started walking to where he heard Bear last. He saw a red substance on the ground in front of him. He touched it, and the red substance was slimy and stuck to his finger. That’s when James realized it was blood. He was not yet sure whose blood it was. Then he saw Bear. Bear lied there like a rotten tree stump. He ran next to Bear and realized he had stab wounds in his stomach and neck. A tear ran down James’ face. Then he heard crunching behind him, and then everything went black. When James awoke, he wasn’t sure where he was. James was a criminal. He was...

...which is required for the system. The analyst makes a brief survey of the requirements and tries to analyze the performance of the system which is to be developed. The system of design The analyst actually makes number of designs of the system on paper or on the computer and sees to it that the rough image made of the system comprises of all the requirements or not. System coding is the analyst translates the code or the programs in such a way that they become in machine readable form. Once the system is done with the coding stage it tests the systems and sees to it that it is working as per the expectations or not. System implantation is one of the most vital phases as in this phase the analyst actually gives the system to the customer and expects for a positive feedback. Finally, the system maintenance is that the analyst needs to maintain the system and see to it that it working within the standards set. He needs to maintain the system by removing the defects of flaws occurred. I think this relates to database development because in 1960 the developers, Elliott and Strachan and Radford developed large scale functional business systems in an age of large scale business conglomerates. Information systems activities revolved around heavy data processing and number crunching routines. The database is also a design lie...

...this career, and my strengths and weaknesses. I’m interested in this career because of the creativity, “number-crunching”, and the environment. From previous accounting classes I know that accountants produce financial statements, budgets, and control inventories. I went to Northwood for a day and observed the actions of Denise and the other accountants in the department. I found that accountant involves many management aspects such as strategic planning and problem solving. I realized that accountant managers receive great pay, benefits, and work in a focused environment. On the other hand, it was very obvious that accounting can be quite boring and difficult to deal with individuals who are very different from yourself. My strengths include being very organized, have patience, can deal with different personalities, and have great problem solving skills. The only weakness I can see associated with this career is how easily I get stressed out. JOB SHADOWING THE CAREER OF AN ACCOUNTANT Since I was in high school, I always knew that when I was older I wanted to become an accountant. I was never really sure what type of accountant or what the job really entailed, but I had my mind set on that major and there was nothing that would be able to change it. I’ve always been interested in being an accountant because of the creativity surprisingly needed, my love of “number-crunching”, and the environment that I would be able to work in for the rest of my life. I believe that I have...

Companies questing for killer apps generally focus all their firepower on the one area that promises to create the greatest competitive advantage. But a new breed of company is upping the stakes. Organizations such as Amazon, Harrah’s, Capital One, and the Boston Red Sox have dominated their fields by deploying industrial-strength analytics across a wide variety of activities. In essence, they are transforming their organizations into armies of killer apps and crunching their way to victory. harvard business review • decision making • january 2006 Organizations are competing on analytics not just because they can—business today is awash in data and data crunchers—but also because they should. ...Database program Vs. Spreadsheet program When choosing which type of program you should use to manage your customer records, you need to know what the difference is between the two. Spreadsheets are designed to analyze data and sort list items, not for long-term storage of raw data. A spreadsheet should be used for ‘crunching’ numbers and storage of single list items. Spreadsheet programs provide the means for keeping inventory, statistical data modeling, and computing data. They also include graphing functions that allow for quick reporting and analysis of data. Spreadsheet programs are relatively easy to use, require little training to get started, and have the advantage that most data mangers are somewhat familiar with them. The disadvantages of spreadsheets include having to re-copy data over and over again to maintain it in separate data files, the inability to efficiently identify data errors, the lack of detailed sorting and querying abilities, and sharing violations among users wishing to view or change data at the same time. Additionally, spreadsheets are restricted to a finite number of records, and can require a large amount of hard-drive space for data storage. Databases require little or no duplication of data between information tables, and changes made to the data do not corrupt the programming. Databases offer better security to restrict users from accessing privileged information, and from changing coded information in the programming. Furthermore, the two...

...Target Market There are two groups that are the target market for the Italian restaurant that is planned to open with high tech and futuristic installations. One of them is the generation Y, the kids born in late 1980s to 1999, who are very knowledgeable about the new technology being brought into the market. Today’s generation Y would be between the age of 13 and 24. This Gen. Y is connected to is most connected group of people due to the help of the technology. They themselves are a marketing tool with the help on the technology they seem to achieve this. This in turn helps the businesses. 91 % of these individual make their Facebook Places and Foursquare check-ins public which is in a way is promoting the business by letting people know that they were there. That would cause the other friends to look up the store where there friend has checked into. According to the statistics 66% of the individual are likely to this. This form of marketing is beneficial for the business. The generation Y promotes the things they like and the places they have been to. The other target markets are the families consisting. They are the main focus our strategies. This group is likely to spend more money than the individual and are more likely to come back to the restaurant if they find to their liking. They are likely to bring kids with them. Kids area...

...different treatment. What was the author trying to illustrate when he mentioned the JoAnn.com discount of 10% on two sewing machines, and the Offermatica graphic example? The author wants to illustrate the application of randomized test in company. Offermatica shows the way that Super Crunching often exploits technology to shorten the time between data collection, analysis and implementation and conduct multiple tests at once. It also emphasizes the power of testing multiple combinations that it lets companies be bolder. As a conclusion, the power of randomization is about marketing. The author mentions a method known as Taguchi. Google this term to get more insight on this and write a synopsis of this technique. Taguchi methods are statistical methods developed by Genichi Taguchi to improve the quality of manufactured goods, and more recently also applied to engineering, biotechnology, marketing and advertising. Professional statisticians have welcomed the goals and improvements brought about by Taguchi methods, particularly by Taguchi's development of designs for studying variation, but have criticized the inefficiency of some of Taguchi's proposals. Give your thoughts about the number of tests run by Captial One in 2006. Is it possible for one company to do this much testing? I think it’s possible. In fact ,Captial One has been running randomized tests for a long time. Way back in 1995, it ran an even larger experiment by generating a mailing list of 600,000...

...Problem Solving, building blocks. These are as followed in chorological order define the problem, generate solutions, decide course of action, implement solution, and evaluate solution. The five points are the same as one would use a road map to help decide the best route to take. The first of the points is the most crucial of the system, because it is what the rest of the idea will be based upon. Many things can be done to gather the information that is needed to help define a given problem, such as surveys, comment boxes, etc. However one must understand to identify the true problem and not the perceived problem. Another way of putting this is to not treat the symptom but the root problem. Although it takes much more data and number crunching to define the real problem, once it’s identified it makes the process much smoother. Next step is to generate a solution or solutions to the real issue. This can also be referred to as brainstorming. During this step many solutions may be thought up but as the process continues the best solution will be uncovered. So a decision is made to find the best of these, which is the next point or block on the process. This process is where the pros and cons of each solution is examined and tested for optimal performance. In this step everything and anything that may go wrong or right will be discus. Then analyzed will be given of each one to gather information as to which shall be drafted to the next step in the process. Implementation...

...A Business Plan for Beauty Shop A beauty shop, like any other business must be planned and operated very carefully to ensure both its functionality and longevity. This provides the business with structure and helps to eliminate any mishaps from happening which could lead to any number of grievances. Here is a short list which could help in planning to start one’s own beauty shop. 1. Locate the target market- basically before starting a business you need to know where you want the business to operate out of. So finding the right location in which you think will provide the most success is vital. Things such as competition (other beauty shops) could decrease the chances of building a good clientele. 2. Gather the appropriate funds- once the optimal location is found, and at a price which seems fit at the time, it is now time to start number crunching. Gather all information on any, or all money purchases that is needed to buy or rent the shop along with any start-up costs, and gather any monetary funds needed. Before going into a business it is VERY advisable to have good credit standing in case of any loans etc. or have the money on hand. (Money on hand is less risky than taking out a loan but a loan leaves room for profit earlier whereas you don’t break the bank paying all the money at once.) Also do not expect profit right away. While all the start-up costs for a business do pile up and seems very discouraging, this is not out of the norm. Many businesses do not see...
