When O'Brien talks about/says the deaths of men such as Ted Lavender, Short (with words) and rude Lemon, and Kiowa before he gives information about how and when they died in later on book and also, the men of the Alpha Company must deal with the (problems, delays, etc.) loss of their own men and the guilt that comes from killing and watching others did. O'Brien's guilt has him so constantly thinking about the live on his victim that his own existence is in the story.
