Organic Food Benefits “Organic Food Consumption is one of the fastest growing segments of U.S. domestic foodstuffs. Sales of organic food and beverages grew from $1 billion in 1990 to $21.1 billion in 2008” (Walter J. Crinnion, ND 4), and is continuing to increase year after year. There has been many studies on the differences between non-organic and organic food, and there is one universal truth. Compared to non-organic food, organic food has better health benefits, according to research, as well as more nutrition, and less pesticides. To determine the health benefits of organic food, researchers used a fruit fly called Drosophila Melanogaster, raised it on organic produce, and tested the overall fly health. “Flies raised on diets made from organically grown produce had greater fertility and longevity. On certain food sources, greater activity and greater stress resistance was additionally observed, suggesting that organic food bestows positive effects on fly health” (Ria Chhabra, Santharam Kolli, Johannes H. Bauer 1). Through this knowledge and several other studies, it is safe to say that organic food has higher levels of nutrients that are essential to the body, as well as higher protein. “Organic food has furthermore been shown to contain lower levels of nitrates, which may explain some of the improved health characteristics of Drosophila raised on organic foods” (Ria Chhabra, Santharam Kolli, Johannes H. Bauer 7). There has been several reviews and studies on nutritional differences between organic and non-organic food, which determines that organic food has better nutrition. According to reviews there are four nutrients that are significantly higher in organic food than conventional food.
