The time is 1948, and Fast food was a booming business. Most places consisted of carhops that served your burger window side to your car. Out of the many, there is one fast food franchise that stood out from the rest, In N out Burger. Established by Harry Snyder, In N Out had a new intuitive idea of a drive thru. One of the first in California to utilize a two way speaker, In N Out burger allowed for drivers to order their food thru the speaker, eliminating the use of a carhop and expediting the speed of their order. From day one, Harry Snyder’s vision was simple. “Give customers the freshest, highest quality foods you can buy and provide them with friendly service in a sparkling clean environment." While other companies were successful, In N out burger stood out to be a crowd favorite due to the quality, freshness, and service. (Burger history, 2013)
From the beginning, Harry‘s marketing plan was based on simplicity. The main focus was providing quality burgers at a low cost, with speedy and superior customer service. His company structure was composed on those factors. Harry was very cautious when it came to making executive decisions. He made sure that the image did not diminish as he expanded; therefore Harry only opened a small chain of restaurants. All 18 locations were kept within close proximity to ensure that each location followed the same company structure. When first established, In N out had a vertical structure. There was one boss and one chain of command. Being a smaller company, it was easier to manage employees and maintain the company persona. At the same time that In N out opened their doors, McDonalds had completely renovated their menu and was also providing speedy service and burger s at low cost.
