Application Plan and Evaluation

The intent of this exercise is to help you apply this cluster of skills in a real-life, out-of-class setting. Now that you have become familiar with the behavioral guidelines that form the basis of effective skill performance, you will improve most by trying out those guidelines in an everyday context.

Unlike a classroom activity, in which feedback is immediate and others can assist you with their evaluations, this skill application activity is one you must accomplish and evaluate on your own. There are two parts to this activity. Part 1 helps prepare you to apply the skill. Part 2 helps you evaluate and improve on your experience. Be sure to write down answers to each item. Don’t short-circuit the process by skipping steps.

Part 1. Planning

1. Write down two or three aspects of this skill that are most important to you. These may be areas of weakness, areas you most want to improve, or areas that are most salient to a problem that you face right now. Identify the specific aspects of this skill that you want to apply.

After reading the chapter1, first I think I need to improve my sensitive line. Because sometimes I become defensive when encountering information. I would also like to improve myself-awareness. I think I need to know what kind of people I look like. What’s my characteristic? Am I a good person or not? What kind of people I should be? They are all I need to know.

2. Now identify the setting or the situation in which you will apply this skill. Establish a plan for performance by actually writing down a description of the situation. Who else will be involved? When will you do it? Where it will be done?

Circumstances:
Skill 1 : My manager will give me some evaluation during my work time. He will say something about my work.
Skill 2: In terms of myself-awareness, I will ask my friend some questions and doing self-disclose for three days.

Skill 1: Myself and my manager
Skill 2: My friends and my roommate

When?
Skill 1: This weekend, Feb. 28th and March 1st
Skill 2: March 2nd to March 4th

Skill 1: Teriyaki house
Skill 2: My apartment, glass hall 3. Identify the specific behaviors in which you will engage to apply this skill. Operationalize your skill performance. The specific behaviors in which I will engage to apply the first skill is to avoid threat- rigidity response. When the manager said “are you tired today?” I should not think he is blaming me and protect myself and be annoyed. The specific behaviors in which I will engage to apply the second skill is self-disclosure. Open my heart to the other person before I catch a glimmering of myself.

4. What are the indicators of successful performance? How will you know you have been effective? What will indicate you have performed competently? For the first skill, the indicators of successful performance is I will not defensive and protective when I encounter uncomfortable information or uncertainty is created. For the second skill, the indicators of successful performance is I know myself very well. I know my strengthens and weakness. And I know how to get well along with other people.

Part 2. Evaluation

5. After you have completed your implementation, record the results. What happened? How successful were you? What was the effect on others? I became more patient and I would not be angry when others say something bad to me. My sensitive line improved. When my manager misunderstand me, even though I was angry about that, but I didn’t show my unpleasant. I let myself calm down and wait a second and then talk to him politely. After the three day of self-disclose, I heard varieties answer, someone said I am a nice person, some said I have some weakness. I collected the answer and I know my weakness were a little shy and lazy and my strength were honest and friendly.

6. How can you improve? What modifications can you make next time? What will you do differently in a similar situation in the future? In the future, when my manager criticize me again, I will not be angry because I know it was useless. I will get along well with my manager and colleagues and it will help me to finish my work better. For the result of self-awareness, I will become more positive, make new friends initiatively and become more confident when talk to others. I will make a schedule of my daily life to overcome lazy cause I always forgot to do something.

7. Looking back on your whole skill practice and application experience, what have you learned? What has been surprising? In what ways might this experience help you in the long term? I have learned it’s very important to have a good mood. And it has been surprised that people around me like me more. And I know how to improve my weakness. I will be a better person in the future.
