...It thrills me to write to you today on behalf of Dana Wright, my close friend and collaborator. Since my arrival at Jonathan Alder High School in 2007, Dana and I have collaborated to revolutionize the way we teach ELA at JAHS. JAHS students do not see Mrs. Wright as a school librarian. She is a co-teacher and resource whom they can rely on to help them in any subject area, with any assignment, even after they graduate and enter the collegiate or work worlds. The beginning was a glorious time as I was one of the few teachers who saw the genius of Dana’s knowledge and teaching abilities. The library became my second classroom and Dana a part of our regular curriculum. As other teachers saw the benefit of collaborating with Dana in lesson design,...

...Tenesha Huffer Literature Review Teacher Retention in School System The school teacher turnover rates fluctuate each year the recruitment and retention problem varies across the United States. Due to the Adequate Progress objectives for improved achievements and No Child Left Behind Act, there is a great demand for qualified school teacher (Piecki 2003). These teachers across the nation are struggling to rethink middle school, particularly in cities were the challenge of adolescent volatility, spiking violence and lagging academic performances are more acute (Brown & Rollenfson 2001). Some external characteristics of school district are also related to school teacher retention rates. Many schools have a high number of minority student, low student achievement, and high poverty level. It had been know that individual school district attractiveness can affect current and prospective teachers. Teachers both old and new don’t want to remain at a school where the building is not kept clean (Newwell 2004). These are some things that effect school teacher retention rates. The school turnover rates comes a great expense, both in the negative cumulative effect on student achievement, and as a financial drain to the state and districts that repeatedly prepare, recruit and support teachers for the same position (Clark 2003). It is not the goal of any school district to lose teachers. Middle school teachers effect high school student’s achievement, which effect enrollment...

...Education” to inform readers about the education system and to persuade readers with his opinions and statements that the “banking” concept of education should not be adopted in the education of students rather it should be the “problem-posing” method. In his writing he explains the education system as “A careful analysis of the teacher-student relationship at any level, inside or outside the school, reveals its fundamentally narrative character. This relationship involves a narrating Subject (the teacher) and patient, listening objects (the students)… Education is suffering from narration sickness.” Freire believes that education is suffering from a relationship of a teacher that speaks and a student that just listens to what the teacher will narrate. For example, “the outstanding characteristic of this narrative education… is the sonority...

...need to consider the following the work force plan this is to make sure that they have a good support of staff with the correct skills in order to cater for OSA needs and students. Therefore they may need new staff for a particular subject to make the subject grow and to provide students with the right learning of that particular subject. This can be essential in OSA as without the right amount of staff it can mean they will lack the ability to provide all the students with the right teaching and it can take time to work with everyone. If they were to have a big group due to less teachers for the business lessons it can meet not every students needs will be met and this have an effect on their overall performance. For example Cheney School were lacking enough teachers to teach ICT this then meant they struggle to provide students with the right teachers to teach them the subject and they couldn’t find anyone to teach the subject. Therefore the result of this meant the school had to get rid of the subject completely which affected the school as parents were not happy that students were...

...Reflection Beyond the Blackboard' tells us the story of a determined teacher. The story I think took place in 1980’s setting and follows a young, newly hired teacher named Ms. Stacey Bess who ends up teaching homeless shelter children at a school without a name. She finds the classroom to be not much more than a filthy shed with a few tattered books, one desk, several old mismatched chairs and a resident rat. Her students are sullen, unkempt, and even unruly and so are their parents all present a reality Stacey, nor any other teacher, were ever trained for. When the train passes along the building, the classroom shakes as if it’s about to give in, and then a resident rat comes out a hole in the floor making some kids to freak out and scream. The school head who hired her remains unreachable when she repeatedly tries to ask for help. But with these circumstances at hand, can an individual really make a difference? Knowing a one’s job that much tough, I believe that most of the people engage in that scenario would have already simply quit after one day’s terrible and melancholic experience. In fact, it had me shaken out my very nerves watching the movie. But as an eye-opener, this teacher — Ms. Stacey Bess, not only made a splendid decision to go back to the homeless shelter (maybe she’s quite reluctant to admit to herself her first job being failed without yet trying to give her very best), made an outstanding performance as she fought for her students, transformed their attitudes...

...said that teachers is ranked one of the most stressful jobs today in the United States. Even though many people may not see it, teachers are actually hugely undervalued in being tasked with creative supportive learning environments that enable their students to thrive. I agree with Patricia because if the government starts allowing teachers to carry guns, there stress level is going to soar and they won’t be able to continue highly as they did prior. Jennings gives good points throughout her opinion essay but there is a couple flaws such as saying “don’t arm the teachers, but instead go on social media, arm them with resources to be more mindful, compassionate and responsive in the classroom so they know what to look for if there is a shooter approaching”. Instead of just going on twitter or instagram, we can look into more effective things such as for example, a security guard l or a police officer at the school because both of these occupations are highly skilled in using a service weapon and there number one priority is to protect....

I was really upset with myself so turned and put my head down, until fifteen minutes later the class clown started. I remember the words “Everyone is failing, and it is close to the time where reports will be going out”, which were said by the permanent sub of my seventh grade science class. Some payed attention to what she said and some went on with their conversations. At that time, the sub had been there for about four months, due to our teacher being on maternity leave. Our original teacher had left her lesson plans and all of the work that we were supposed to do, but most of the time we would just go in to the class and just talk and play around.I am the oldest of my moms children and the second youngest child on my fathers children. ...What does my full name mean? This was the essay assigned to me by my outstanding English teacher Mrs. Beddingfield. When we were first assigned this topic, I was very excited and began my research immediately I knew insufficient facts about my name, however; I was not clueless. I have always known that my first name bailey is great for either a male or female. I also knew that my middle name Allen was a family name. My middle name Allen came from my father’s side of the family. My last name Doolittle is very rare. All I knew was that it is my father’s name, and it has Irish roots. It is also used as a very popular movie title Dr. Dolittle. Every name has a meaning to me. All names have a power to them and were given to that person for a specific reason. I have always wondered many things about my name. Where it was first originated from, what is its meaning,...

...Home Schooling vs. Public Schooling Jill Norris COM155 October 27, 2012 Dr. Melton Home Schooling vs. Public Schooling The grand cartoonist Al Capps once said, “Any place that anyone can learn something useful from someone with experience is an educational institution.”(Capps) This statement evokes thought of exactly what defines a “school.” Can any place be called a school? Certainly the home can be called a school as there are around 1.5 million children in the United States are homeschooled. Home schooled children are able to practice their religion, can have a different curriculum, and different disciplinary actions, but both can lead to a well educated student. Public schools, even with all of their bad press, are still the most popular way to educate a child (Homeschool Or Public School? 2012) According to www.hslada.org, which provides legal analysis of home school laws, someone that is interested in homeschooling their children should follow the law of the state in which they reside. Laws governing home school education vary by state and according to the 10th Amendment of the Constitution the power to regulate all forms of education belong to the states. Homeschooling is included in this protection. The Constitution states that the federal government is not allowed to interfere with or control public or private forms of education. The progression requirements for home schooled children do differ state by state and the federal government has no laws or...

...Most of the saints are remembered for some outstanding virtue or devotion which they practiced, but Jerome is frequently remembered for his bad temper! It is true that he had a very bad temper and could use a vitriolic pen, but his love for God and his Son Jesus Christ was extraordinarily intense; anyone who taught error was an enemy of God and truth, and St. Jerome went after him or her with his mighty and sometimes sarcastic pen. He was above all a Scripture scholar, translating most of the Old Testament from the Hebrew. He also wrote commentaries which are a great source of scriptural inspiration for us today. He was an avid student, a thorough scholar, a prodigious letter-writer and a consultant to monk, bishop and pope. St. Augustine (August 28) said of him, "What Jerome is ignorant of, no mortal has ever known." St. Jerome is particularly important for having made a translation of the Bible which came to be called the Vulgate. It is not the most critical edition of the Bible, but its acceptance by the Church was fortunate. As a modern scholar says, "No man before Jerome or among his contemporaries and very few men for many centuries afterwards were so well qualified to do the work." The Council of Trent called for a new and corrected edition of the Vulgate, and declared it the authentic text to be used in the Church. In order to be able to do such work, Jerome prepared himself well. He was a master of Latin, Greek, Hebrew and Chaldaic. He began his studies at his birthplace...

...story, poem, or other piece of literature that uses the hero concept; it captures the reader and keeps the reader interested. The hero concept is clearly used in "Bodega Dreams," "Hard Rock Returns to Prison for the Criminal Insane," and "The Train from Hate." The authors of these pieces of literature keep the reader captivated by using the hero concept, and the pathos appeal, evoking a sense of emotion in the reader. "Bodega Dreams" by Ernesto Quinonez has a great example of a hero. This short story is of a class of apparent minority students, who are told by one teacher that they will never amount to anything, and would end up in jail or on the streets. Since the students are being constantly told that they will fail, they don't make an effort. This causes another teacher, the "hero," to become very angry, because he wants to see his students succeed. The narrator reveals this teachers heroic nature when the teacher makes his speech to the class, "I don't care what Blessington's been telling you! If you are here it is because you want to be, right? Otherwise don't even come to school, just stay on the street. You can make more money selling pot on the stairwells than coming to my classroom, but if you come and I want you to come, I like having you here." (Quinonez) Any reader would be captivated by this...

...My Community, My Country, Myself ETH 125 June 29, 2014 Anna Geletka In Northwest Ohio sits, a small town in Anycounty County called Anytown. With approximately 492, people within a half a mile space Anytown is just a small part of the nineteen miles of Hancock County. Within our little town, we are lucky enough to have many city amenities like a family owned market with full service butchers, a salon, a couple restaurants, a bar and a gas station. Along with an outstanding park with a hill for sledding down in the winter, a pool for swimming during the summer and ball fields for baseball/softball season. However, our small town is very short on racial diversity. Our town has 492 people in our town and our racial make-up is 98.2% white and 1.6% African American and 2.6% Hispanic. (http://factfinder2.census.gov/) Of the 183 homes in our town, 73.2% are homes with homeowner living in them and 26.8% are occupied rental units bringing transits into our area on a regular basis-leaving door open for expansion of diversifying the opportunities in our community. Diversity is short in our little town as you can see by the numbers. I believe this is true because the majority of citizens from our town have lived here for generations upon generations. I can attest to this particular statement because my significant other was born and raised around here and his parents were also born and raised around here. His parents lived in the same house 56 years before they were moved...
