Personal Skills and Qualities Personal Example in Practice
Technical Skills When completing my GCSEs I had to complete an ICT course in order to achieve the GCSE, as well as this where I work I’m obligated to use technology such as the till on a regular basis.
Specialist Skills As a young child I took part in competitions such as riding and ballet, this meant I had to learn new skills especially for the cause, this I used mainly for these activities only. This included improving my balance and posture for both sports as well as control of the horse.
Courage Courage I found was taking part in activities I didn’t make to do or like the look of, like in year 6 I went to woodlands and had to complete a number of activities that made me nervous but I did with the help and support of friends and teachers.
Confidence In the summer I went to Mallorca, during this trip we went into the mountains and visited a small beach in-between a valley like ridge. We walked down the valley which was pathed with large stone, rocks and boulders that could fall or move any point under our weights. We had to help each other under and over these.
Integrity When my mum got a new laptop for her job I had to teach her how to use it, as well as the software and the apps that came with it.
Determination When completing assignments I am determined too hand them in on time and too a grade that will get me a good end of year result.
Decisiveness After leaving year 11 we had to choice to go to college or sixth form, or even do an apprenticeship. This meant we had to decide if we wanted to do as a future prospect and had to quickly before all the spaces were taken on the course. This was very important and if chosen wrong could have been a hassle as well as an inconveniences in the long term view of everything such as future goals etc.
Mental Agility When my oldest niece first started school she was beginning to learn to spell and to do basic math and counting. I guided her and taught her easy ways to help her remember this.
Instilling Trust When my sister was choosing her prom dress she entrusted me to help her chose a colour and a style to fit her and suit her. She loved it in the end.
Instilling Loyalty When my best friend got in a fight with my other friend I was there to defend her when she was right and was there to support her.
Instilling Discipline My niece was messing around one day and got carried away, which then got out of hand. She got very bossy and threw toys if she didn’t get what she wanted, my sister went to get my other sister as she wasn’t listening to her. As she left she became naughtier and I had to put her in the naught seat teaching her she couldn’t do that and get away with it, no matter who it was.
Instilling Morale When I younger I took part as a volunteer at my primary schools sports day, this involved me organising the children and giving clear instructions. As well as this I had to be positive and show team spirit.
Instilling Motivation My younger sister wanted me to help her lose weight, this meant I worked beside her and kept her motivated as well as not allowing her to stop if I thought I could push her further,
Instilling Respect When I was little my sister had a sleepover and my mum went out down the road for an hour or two, I tidied up the mess left by my sister and my mum told me she respected me for showing how grown if I was,
Good at being fair When my friends came over a day in the summer I allowed them to ride my horse. I allowed them the same time and opportunities as they felt comfortable.
Not favouring individuals When I went up to visit my sister and family in Durham I was left in charge of a small group of children under five whilst the adults caught up and relaxed for a bit. After a few hours of playing they became memorized by a game on my phone and my neice decalred as I was her auntie she had to play on it first, whilst another child wouldn’t let anyone hold the phone and did the age for them (showing them how to play). To eliminate any unfairness I let them play one game each in order and held the phone when they argued.
Knowing the strengths and weaknesses within a group When I was working at a holiday club in Wantage of a riding school I had to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the people in my team, as well as put them in pairs suited to their skills and weaknesses.
Understanding the groups role Working at the pony club paying close attention to the children, as well as their roles and responsibilities-Including the adults-Is key. This is also so I knew who to report to and who was responsible for different departments and children.
Making sure information is shared At work a rota is displayed on the wall but not sent to each of us so if someone needs covering it is our responsibility to find someone and also to share the rota, this so done by whoever gets a photo and who is on that day. This is sent to a group chat based around work.

Personal skills and qualities are highly important within the public services. This is because everyone who is a part of the team need to have their own skills and qualities as that is what makes the team a tighter unit and bring them closer and more able to trust each other.
Technical skills and specialist skills are skills that are highly needed and used to carry out tasks and roles within the public services, specialist skills are required in jobs that need certain equipment such as, sea survival, map reading, power of arrest and using used in the services such as in the marines and aircraft. Officers should be kept up to date in recent technology developments, but aren’t required to know every in and out of the system. However select members of the team should know this information in case it is needed at a later date. Whereas technological skills are skills that are bases around the technology of the service such as, using radars, cameras, drones, computers and other systems that require training to be able to use them. Technical skills may be use in the navy or royal air force as a means of communications, this means a communications expert would be required to know how to use communication equipment, radars and navigational equipment. Whereas specialists would focus on roles like boat handling, sea survival and communicational equipment like radios; this is because this is more practical. The team leaders would be responsible for focusing on each individual team member and evaluate their personal skills and strengths, as well as weaknesses. They then appoint each person to roles suited to them, for example if they are good at thinking and reacting fast the leader might choose to put them on a more interactive roles that involves problem solving. It is essential that these skills are obtained in this situation as if roles were given to people who don’t possess specific skills the work can be less effective and also not to a good standard, both of which are key.
Leaders should have a number of qualities that are beneficial to the team and are also make an impact to the team. They should stand out and be recognised as an authoritative role model for the team. Their skills should include, of course, leadership, this is so they are able to control and lead the team. They also should be courageous and assertive. This means they are able to feel confident and in control of the team at all times, and also of the situation- this also benefits the quality of the briefing and debriefing as they are confident and know what they are doing and what has happened. They need to keep the team close together and on their toes, this can be done by doing unexpected drills and training, and they can also motivate the team by using rewards and positive reinforcement, known as transactional leadership. The leader should be fair but tough to the team when needs be such as when responding to an emergency.
Scenario 1
You are the bronze commander responding to an explosion at a bank. It is 9.30 am on Monday morning and the bank is busy with staff and customers and is located on a busy road in central London. There is a suspicion that the incident is terrorist related and not an accidental explosion.
The services attending the incident- in this instance, the fire, ambulance as well as police and the bomb disposal would all be there would be required to fulfil a list off duties that are nerve wrecking and dangerous. The bomb disposal would be at the heart and centre of the scene looking for any unexploded or hidden bombs and eliminating any potential dangers. The police would be on the lookout for any suspicious behaviour and the offender themselves, as well as this they will be on the inner cordon preventing people unauthorised from gaining access as well as taking witness statements and talking to effected families and offering support, as well as blocking off access points to the public and reporters. The ambulance would be on the ring of the inner cordon and outer cordon as well looking after the casualties and injured, also if anyone needed any medical attention they are on hand to help. The fire service would be there to put out any fires caused by the explosion and would be able to get and protect anyone caught in the danger zone as well as prevent and save buildings from falling down. Any non-statutory team would be based on the outer cordon and well outside to deal with less serious injuries and look after people from the outside.

Skills and Qualities Example in Practice
Technical Skills The services would use radios for communicational purposes to be able to communicate with other services regarding the incident at hand. They would also use be able to keep any public away from any potential dangers.
Specialist Skills They would also use people from different specialist departments such as the bomb disposal squad and also the national counter terrorism security office would be able to stand in with the police to help find and restrain the risk of ever re-occurring again.
Courage The services would have to be courageous as they are protecting and preserving the life of the people who were effected and in the general public, they are trained to deal with these situations so they are seen as responsible for the welfare of the public. They are put into dangerous situations such as near any fires or weak buildings and dealing with any potential bombs, protestors or people a part of the bombings.
Confidence They must be confident they can control the situation at hand and the people effected and involved. If they show they aren’t confident they might worry the other members of the team and also the people seeing this first hand.
Integrity They must do whatever they can to look after everyone and follow protocol. They must constantly be kept up to date and not give out any false information especially too the public as it can cause an outburst towards the services and make people loose faith in them and their jobs/intentions.
Determination The overall goal of the services is to be able to complete their mission and protect the public. They must be passionate and determined to do right by the public and by those effected, they must be able to be determined but cautious regarding their decisions. They must be determined to put a stop to the hazards and risks that are going on.
Decisiveness This operation wouldn’t be easy to carry out without any form of decisions being made as there are so many factors that could go wrong and the risks that can happen if any of the decisions aren’t right or aren’t done to plan, lots of things could change if anything happened so they should be ready with a second plan just in case anything happened. The overall decision
Instilling Trust The services whole job is based around and made up of trust between the public and the services. The roles and responsibilities of the services are to protect and preserve the life of the services. This is their everyday job and is done by the public trust the lives of their families and loved ones. As well as protecting the facilities destroyed or threatened by the bombers, in this case the bank.
Instilling Respect This means that the public can see the services working first hand through actually seeing them and also through the media reports, this means the level of trust as well as respect from the public to the services increases.
Knowing the strengths and weaknesses within a group Knowing the strengths and weaknesses within the team is critical to the running, efficiency and quality of work done by the services. If a role is given to someone who might have difficulty completing the task as their skills and qualities are completely different, whereas there might be someone more suited to the role.
Understanding the groups role Understanding the group’s role is very important as if they don’t understand their specific job they might interfere with someone’s job or get in their role. They might also put the lives of team members or others in danger if anything was to happen such as an unexpected bomb exploded.
Making sure information is shared Communication is key in a situation like this, in terms of keeping each person up to date and in the loop, this also reduces the risk of others getting in harm’s way.

Scenario 2
You are responding to an emergency 999 call for a multiple vehicle collision on the M25. The incident has caused an oil spillage across the main carriageway if the M25. It is 5.00 pm on a Friday and you have angry motorists who have been sitting in traffic for a long time and you have a number of casualties including a young family.
When attending scene my first concern would be to call an ambulance and assign as well as brief the team on the situation and the overall goal- which is too remove the casualties to a safer place and treat those injured. As well as this blocking off any areas that could potentially cause any dangers would be the next step. I would then call in a unit that would be able to deal with the spillage, once this is done and services have moved the crashed vehicles and oil away from each other eliminated the risk of any fires being set, the fire services would deal with this. Once the causalities have been moved away and all statements have been taken the clean-up would commence, then once everything was okay the barriers would be taken down and the traffic and flow of traffic would be reset.

Skills and Qualities Example in Practice
Technical Skills When in operation the use of helicopters would be required, this is to get a bird eye view of the scene and see the extent of the damage, also if in an emergency they might have to airlift someone to the hospital, this is quicker and needs technical skills.
Specialist Skills The nurses and doctors as well as the fire service mean and women need to be trained fully to be able to deal with and guide in this situations. Also to be able to keep calm and do their work quickly and efficiently.
Courage The fire services as well as the victim should be courageous as they have to be able to contain the hazardous situations and be able to keep as calm as they can as well as support each other to make the jobs of the services easier.
Determination The police must be determined to find the cause of the incident as well as clear it up as fast as they can. As well as dealing with the victims, their families and the other services who might need their support.
Decisiveness Making decisions on the spot which effects the people around the team, the victims and the families of the victims/.
Instilling Trust The people in the services such as the ambulance haver you be kind and caring as well as effective when dealing with patience as they will be hurt injured and scared. If they can see the person caring for them is doing their job it shows the rest of the people around them they are trustworthy. So it the services.
Not favouring individuals People shouldn’t be neglected or prioritised. Only in the sense of being biased or based on their status.
Knowing the strengths and weaknesses within a group People who are in the team need to be put into roles best suited to them and are able to get the best of their work done quickly. People have to be able to work in roles best suited to them, for example you wouldn’t put someone who is a firefighter in an ambulance or to be ion victim support.
Making sure information is shared Information had to be shared so people are kept up to date, if not things can go at different places and will get all confused.

Scenario 3
You are based in Afghanistan and you need to brief your team on the upcoming operation to gain control of a local opposition stronghold (i.e. a village with the Taliban in control). You have a mixed bag of personnel, some that are newly out of basic training and some that have had significant battle experience. Many are nervous and many are excited. What qualities are needed for this situation?

Skills and Qualities Example in Practice
Specialist Skills People in the team would be made aware of their roles in respect to their skills and qualities. They might be put into teams based on their skills and the older and also newer team members should almost be paired together as they will be able to help and support each other. They might also get better outside view and new perspective pf the situations. Fresher input.
Courage Courage is the foundation of a good plan and breakthrough. This is what everyone needs to see and have, especially in this case as it has many risks and peoples involved.
Confidence As the leader briefing confidence is so important as the team have to see that you are confident and know what is going on. This shows the team you are the right leader and also lets the people know that you’re a strong team.
Determination The determination is what is driving the team, they also have to be determined to help takeback the village. This shows the team work well and also determined to allow the team wot work together based on their experiences, skills and time in the force.
Decisiveness As team leader the ability to be able to make decisions on the spot are critical, the ability to stick to them is also grey important as if you change your mind things can go wrong. You have it be able to keep in ton account the individuals skills and qualities as well as their experience.
Instilling Trust Instilling trust to the team and the people outside is so important as it shows a healthy relationship as well as level of commitment to the people. This also means they are able to work together known they each have each other’s backs.
Instilling Loyalty Showing loyalty to the locals and the team shows a sense of commitment and also a sense of teamwork and partnership. Loyalty is gained and built, this also shows that the team be able to show the lead they work well together and are happy or follow them and also trust each other. Especially the captain and leader.
Knowing the strengths and weaknesses within a group Knowing a team’s weaknesses and strength, especially individuals is key-and a bonus. This shows the team are connected and know what each other are thinking. This also helps improve the bond and help work on it, this means people can be assigned roles suited to their individual strengths and weaknesses for this mission.

Scenario 4
You and your classmates are on an expedition in mountainous terrain in the Lake District. You have been walking in poor weather conditions for most of the day, and most of the group are wet, cold and tired. You are due to arrive at your next campsite shortly but you realise that you are lost.
The team should be able to communicate with each other and share their joined knowledge of the situation. They should be able to keep calm and support each other. The team leader should be able to keep the team in check as well as assign roles to the right people based on their mental agility and their skills and experience. Someone should try and keep the team spirit up and alive, at least until the team has set up and able to relax a little bit better.

Skills and Qualities Example in Practice
Specialist Skills People in the team might have previous experience such as survival skills, tent making or tracking such as map reading skills. This is basic in some forms but is very helpful. Even finding significant landmarks which might be recognisable, signs or sign posts can be helpful.
Confidence When lost some people might panic, the team can help with this by calming them, and telling them a plan. Having confidence and not panicking makes everything clearer and can reduce the time spent lost. This can also make the team stronger as they work together and also more confident that they can sort this out by themselves if it happened again.
Determination The determination will wake them up and also make them think and work as a team to get out of the mess.
Decisiveness The ability to make the decisions quickly can save time and is often done by someone who knows that they are talking about, they also make the team more confident, they also show team work and a strength as a team as it can be a group decision.
Instilling Motivation The fact they got through the issue shows they can motivate each other. This also leads to can get through the rest of the walk and can show now be motivated to get through the rest if the walk, and also the next stage of the walk to the campsite. This is able to bring the team spirits up and also make the trip more memorable, as well as a happier overall experience.
Knowing the strengths and weaknesses within a group Knowing who in the team is able to keep calm and make an impact in this situation is very important. This can be the difference between a melt down and a kept together group. Making sure information is shared Making sure the team is kept up to date is the best way to keep the team calm and stop everyone from getting frustrated at each other.
