Throughout the 20th century, the primary idea psychology thought about young children is that children are very impressionable and malleable. By the age of, perhaps six or seven, their minds and personalities are formed, and they become much harder to change. During this time, sociologists were trying to find solutions for various social problems, like school failure, poverty, and juvenile delinquency. Eventually, experts in child development put two and two together and began developing intensive early intervention preschool programs for low socio-economic children and their families. The idea was to provide them with an enriched educational environment at a pre-school, improve mental health, and perhaps to teach parents how to enhance their environments at home. One such program that reaches out to families and children is Regina Coeli Child Development Center.
Background of Regina Coeli Child Development Center
Regina Coeli Child Development Center is a Head Start Grantee Organization that serves area children and families in a five parish area. Regina Coeli serves approximately 2115 children program wide. Regina Coeli Child Development Center offers three distinct programs. Head Start offers center-based and home-based comprehensive preschool programs for children from three to five years. Early Head Start offers a program for pregnant mothers and children from the age of six weeks to three years. Migrant and Seasonal Head Start offers program for children from six weeks to fives years, whose families work planting and harvesting agricultural crops (Regina Coeli Child Development Center, n.d.).
Regina Coeli Child Development Center is a nonprofit organization that receives the bulk of its funds through Federal Block Grants from the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The portion of funding the Federal Grant does not cover must be generated through in-kind services and donations provided by area supporters.
Regina Coeli Child Development Center Intervention Services
One of goals of Regina Coeli Child Development Center is to assist families and children on an individual basis to indentify and address the individual needs of each family member. Ensuring good mental health for families and children is important to Regina Coeli Child Development Center. In order for families and children to be successful in school and life, the Program works with families and children to develop positive relationships, manage stress, indentify concerns, and find solutions to problems (Regina Coeli Child Development Center, n.d.).
Many young children have experienced or been exposed to violence, crime, alcohol or drug addiction, physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, or homelessness (Regina Coeli Child Development Center, n.d.). These experiences can negative affect the mental health of young children. Regina Coeli Children Development Center offers services that can help children cope with unhappy or stressful events and help families during a time of crisis. The Program offers mental health counseling and referrals to area mental health agencies for children and families.
Regina Coeli Child Development Center has a comprehensive team of program specialists who assess the needs of each child to evaluate his or her current mental health status. If a problem is indicated or a parent asks for intervention the Mental Health Specialist, who has an extensive background in psychology and child therapy, schedules an appointment for a more comprehensive evaluation. Once an evaluation is completed and additional interventions are warranted, the Program collaborates with area therapists and local mental health facilities to provide the needed services. Several forms of behavioral techniques are used with very young children which include: play therapy, behavior modification programs and positive reinforcement can be beneficial when working with young children. These interventions are modified to meet the needs of the child and are designed to help the child become successful and believe he or she is valued.
Mental health activities provide quiet times and active times. Materials and opportunities for each child to explore, experiment, create, and question is provided throughout the day. Children are encouraged to share and communicate their feelings. Each child is supported in his or her efforts to express positive feelings. The classroom environment is designed to provide opportunities to interact with others and make friends.
Effective Therapy Options for Young Children
Interventions like cognitive therapy can help children cope with their feelings in a supportive environment. Behavior modification, play therapy and positive reinforcement are effective treatment options offered at in the Program Centers. The Program offers referrals for more intensive therapy or treatment options are available for families who desire additional supportive services. Family counseling and mental health counseling can be arranged for families who think they are in need of support and guidance.
Play therapy is a technique that allows a child the freedom to express his or her feelings, through play and is used as a means to assist the child in coping with trauma or emotional distress. It can be used effectively with children who have an understanding level of a normal three to eight-year-old and experienced emotional trauma or distress. Play therapy is also an effective therapy to use with special education students whose disability is a source of anxiety or emotional distress (McIntyre, 2005).
To maximize the effectiveness of therapy, the behavior program needs to be intensive and must begin in early childhood. To increase the ability of the child to successfully function, he or she should be enrolled in an early intervention program that supports the individual needs of the child and decreases maladaptive behaviors through use of behavioral interventions (McIntyre, 2005).
Conclusion
Young children are very impressionable and malleable. Many young children have experienced or been exposed to violence, crime, alcohol or drug addiction, physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, or homelessness. These experiences can negative affect the mental health of young children. Regina Coeli Children Development Center offers services that can help children cope with unhappy or stressful events and help families during a time of crisis. Interventions like cognitive therapy can help children cope with their feelings in a supportive environment. Behavior modification, play therapy and positive reinforcement are effective treatment options offered by Regina Coeli Child Development Center. Families and children who receive supportive mental health services are more likely to be successful now and in the future.
