People Love Phones

As one contemplates the use of cell phones is it possible that in this day and age we are too dependent upon this form of technology? Has it become too easy to pick up the phone and look up one piece of information or another? According to Kolb, (2011), 98 percent of 9th – 12th grade students own a cell phone, and most use these phones at school on a regular basis. Is this cultural phenomenon of benefit to the education of these students or is it detrimental?

There are educators who feel that technology has made kids lazy and unable to remember simple facts (Papert, 1990). Others disagree and feel technology can aid in the education of children (Johnson, 2008). Papert (1998) reports that making education too easy and breaking things down into too small of pieces makes the over-all solution to larger problems nearly impossible for students since they are unable to connect all of the small random bits of information.

So, what should we do as educators to insure that students are getting the right balance? Do students love their phones? I believe probably. Should students be allowed to engage in such dependence on their phones that they do not rely on their own brains and expand their own abilities? I believe students should expand their own learning and not depend simply on the research of others! I believe students should put technology down at times, use technology at times, and rely solely upon technology at no time!

Liking Is for Cowards

...may 28th, 2011 and is based on a speech by Franzen at Kenyon College in Ohio. Since the development of technology, the world is built up on mobile phones , text messages, Facebook and “likes”. What does the word “like” really mean to us? People like pictures, marital status and status in general on Facebook. Do they really like it or do they go with the flow? And what is the difference between like or real love? Jonathan Franzen debates the two images of loving and liking and how technology might have influenced us to change our point of view.First of all he starts telling the reader about his new Blackberry, which is an prior version of the Blackberry generation. His description of his own phone is great in details and the reader gets the impression of the miscellaneousness of the phone. The fantastic fact about such a mobile phone is that “ the beloved object asks for nothing and gives everything, instantly, and makes us feel all powerful, and doesn´t throw terrible scenes when it´s replaced by an even sexier object”. It might mean that the humans prefer more an unrealistic and cold realationship with a technical thing, than with a real human. With this interesting little fact, he gets the reader´s attention. Especially young people, who spend the most of their free time on the computer/ internet and on their mobile phones, start listening to Jonathan Franzen. It´s quite simple to get the reader´s attention by starting...

Great Gatsby Ideology

...Love in The Great Gatsby: “All the bright precious things fade so fast and they don’t come back” Did you know that in Canada almost 40% of first marriages end in divorce? In his adaptation of The Great Gtasby, Baz Luhrmann’s use of props highlights the ideology that love does not last. To express his love, both Daisy and Myrtle receive a string of pearls from Tom. In the flashback scene of Daisy’s wedding day, she receives a letter from Gatsby saying that he is ready to be with her. Just like that, she yells “tell them Daisy’s changed her mind” and proceeds to rip the $350,000 necklace off her neck. Luhrmann positions the camera in a way that it focuses on the pearls scattering all over the floor, showing the dispersion of her love for Tom. Sitting in the tub, Daisy cries hysterically. Gatsby’s letter crumbles to pieces in the water beneath her therefore showing the quick deterioration of her love for Gatsby, then proceeding to marry Tom. Near the end, following her argument with Mr. Wilson, Myrtle runs out towards a car who she believes to be Tom. Daisy collides into Myrtle and the string of pearls around her neck falls to pieces. In the same way, Luhrmann focuses the camera onto the pearls as they shatter and fall to the ground. He also puts this scene in slow motion, further emphasizing the ending of Myrtle’s relationship with both men as well as the downfall of Daisy’s relationship with Gatsby. Throughout the movie, we see the...

Love Them Like You Never Seen Again

... Love Them Like You Never Seen Again As a child you grow up thinking life last forever. You never imagine someone you love so much could leave you in a second. The fact is we all never wanted to loss a love one. When it happens to you young or old the pain is hard to bear. Only if you were given a second chance to love that person like you never see then again. Would you? I would. I would shower her with all my love and cherish her beautiful soul. The women I long to be one day, my mommy. It was January 10, 1997 the day I wish I could rewind and to love her like I’ll never see her again. That last morning I saw my mom, only if I got the chance to tell her one last time that I love her. Only if I got one last chance to hug and kiss her. Only if I got one last time to cherish her. I remember it like it was yesterday. One of the most painful experiencing I’ve went through in my life. I hope when you read my story you will love your love ones more then you did a second ago. It was about 2:30 am the house phone ranged. I wake my sister up became the loud ringing would not stop. When I got out the bed to tell her the phone was ringing I realized that my mother was not lying next to me. “Satta mommy has not come home yet.” When I told her that, she said to me “what do you mean?” “I heard the phone ringing but I wanted to wake you up so you can answer the phone”. My sister then got out of bed and we both went to the living room where the house phone was...

Have Smartphones Destroyed A Generation?

...In contemporary society, media is playing an accelerated speed and therefore, social platforms are becoming increasingly important in people’s life. Yet in the meantime, more and more people become addictive to social media, and can’t identify themselves in the public. For me, I think mobile phones are affecting our ability to present and manage our identities online and offline, and I would like to address some impacts of using mobile phones. First of all, mobile phones are harmful to people’s mental health. In the article Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation? by Jean M. Twenge, the author says: “Smartphones could be causing lack of sleep, which leads to depression, or the phones could be causing depression, which leads to lack of sleep”...

Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts

...obsessive about his BlackBerry Bold cell phone. I would say that he was being sarcastic. Jonathan Franzen talks about how humans use technology to replace the “bad things” in life. He appeals to his readers through pathos. He tries to speak to our feelings by saying “We can handle being disliked now and then, because there’s such an infinitely big pool of potential likers. But to expose your whole self, not just the likable surface, and to have it rejected, can be catastrophically painful.” He claims people are having a relationship to their cell phone or other technological devices. Through this essay Jonathan Franzen builds up an instance by using arguments saying we do not appreciate the physical world enough. Jonathan Franzen is using examples from his own life, how he did not appreciate it before he got his interest in birds. He means many people use technology as a replacement for something more and they do not realize it until it is all they have left to hold on to. Technology has evolved so much. Our devices will do what we want, when we want them to. They will never talk back or say mean things to us. Jonathan Franzen implies that “liking” something on Facebook is so much easier to do than to truly like something. He talks about how people like a lot of things and take away the meaning or purpose of loving something. Jonathan Franzen states that when people try to be so likable, they show the lack of love they have for themselves. People make a...

Compare And Contrast Essay On Apple Vs Androids

...androids are very similar , but they also have several differences. Apple and androids or the most popular phones out., and loved by many people. People love iphones and some people love androids but some people like both, BUt i believe that iphones are better than androids. I think that because they have better qualities and space you can use a lot of gigabits and still have a lot a space left on your iphone but on an android when u download 3 apps your storage goes up and it says your storage is full. Apple¨s are different from androids because they have smaller screens than some androids phones, Iphones 5 have longer battery capacity, and iphones have a very high price when you try to go buy them. They have Lesser carries and hard to find in stores, have more gigabits then androids. Iphones are so different from androids because they have smaller screens and some have big screens. Iphones have a lot of different stuff than most phones they come out ever year or mouth with different upgrades....

Social Media Ruining Relationships

...Relationships with robots are ramping up; relationships with people are ramping down (19). Once upon a time, people had real-life conversations and real relationships. These days we either talk by texting, e-mails, or social media and we are even using the internet to find lovers. People are forgetting how to talk and have sincere relationships because technology is shaping how we falsely feel about others and ourselves. After reading Sherry Turkle’s book, Alone Together, I have become more aware of people and myself always being connected. Honestly, it frightens me. How would people behave without their cell phones or social media? Literally insane. People do not know how to function around other people unless they are connected to something. Why are we letting ourselves and our...

Contemporary Voice Project

...2014 Isn’t it sad that we have to use technology to communicate with people? Yesterday when I was hanging out with my friend Maddi we sat next to each other texting the whole time instead of actually talking to each other. But I guess that’s just how people talk in today’s society... If you think about it almost every conversation a person has is through the phone or computer. I am pretty sure we spent the whole day on our phones. When we were texting she told me how she has been talking to this guy for a few weeks but they have never actually talked in person. She continued on to tell me that she really liked the guy though. Communication is basically only through technology now. A person can text someone and think that they are the nicest person ever but in reality they could be super rude and this would go unnoticed because nobody has face to face conversations anymore. September 21, 2014 Today while texting my mom I realized that I have never actually heard her say “I love you” to me. Emotions are vocalized as much anymore since phones and email have come out. Everything that everyone wants to say is always vocalized through text and the emotions lack. You never really know if someone is sad or mad because it’s hard to see these emotions in text. Since emotions are lacking it causes a type of emotional isolation in people and can cause loneliness. For example my mom saying she loves me through the phone only. I am not getting the real emotional effect of it so it doesn’t...

Apple Products

...I love apple products, I cant get enough of them when I was younger I dreamed of having great technology that made my life easier and not harder. Technology can either make you better or worst and I rather choose items that make me better. Simplicity is actually a rarity in the 21st century. And its great to go to a place were you could service for next to almost all your technologic needs. The apple store is one of the smartest places on the planet. They work for you the people, me being a student I look up to people that can make my life easier and I view them as daily heroes of humanity that do not get enough praise. Now you may say to yourself well Farley its just the apple store theirs nothing special about that. Fine I will prove to you in these next paragraphs why I hold the apple story so high in my heart. 2009 March 28, I had just enter training school in the military and I was a young naïve marine and I had just enter sprint and purchased my first cell phone it was a fairly simple mode no crazy features just enough to call mom. It wasn’t any iPhone but it did the job I guess. I know what you’re thinking what does this have to do with the apple well first off the phone already started giving me problems within the first month of having the phone. And yes customer service was horrible when I went to the store they told me to call up the head quarters and when I called the head quarters they told me to go to the store. Now you can see the frustration I had...

Paul Thomas Anderson

...Punch-Drunk Love is a movie with sparse meaning until you look closer at the symbols that matter to Barry and show his progression. From the beginning of the movie, the phone is Barry's primary method of communication. As we watch him talk on the phone and converse in life, we see he is much more comfortable on the phone. He can lie easier to stay in and avoid being around his overbearing sisters and their imposing expectations of him. They gossip and actively mock him. He does not take it well, one time shattering a sliding door and another time threatening to kill his sister. He can't trust them to be confidential at all. It's why Barry makes such a big deal about confidentiality when he calls the phone sex line. His motivation is simply to have human contact because he is so lonely (he tells the woman it doesn't matter what she looks like.) But after she directs him to more sexual ends, they use it to blackmail him. Now, Barry is on the receiving end of the phone's duplicitous...
