...Salvador Dali The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory MAKING: Select and write about ONE of the MAKING topics – process, education, materials or tools & technology – in 50-100 words. Salvador Dali used same painting elements as we all know today. If we would like to talk about his tools and techniques, the paintings are about “Hand-Painted Decam photographs”, he crisped about the details and used almost invisible brush work style. He gave importance to photographic realism. He contributed in the technical tradition of early Flemish and early Venetician painting. In his process, he used a jeweler’s glass for mainly close work, and small round gable brushes because of these, he had debt to Geargis de Chirico and Yvas Tanguy and they founded the use of perspective. STYLE: Choose and write about ONE of the STYLE topics – period, change, individuality or geography – in 50-100 words. Painted in 1931, The Persistence of Memory is one of the most celebrated and recognized paintings of the 20 th Century. The Persistence of Memory is filled with interesting and meaningful images even the ants, the fly, the olive tree, the steps, the amorphous shape on the beach but none are, nor ever have been, as compelling or as plump with significance as the watches themselves. Thus,it indicates his style to us. IDEOLOGY: In 50-100 words, write about the ideology that matches with your chosen work. It does not have to be an ideology discussed during the semester. In this...

...I was working with a child who began to display disruptive and anti-social behaviours randomly lashing out physically and verbally. To begin with I wanted to understand where this behaviour was stemming from, so I approached the child's parents in private to discuss my concerns. Initially the parents were not receptive of the fact that their child was in need of additional support and informed me that they were not concerned with their child's behaviour. They attributed the behaviour to 'boys being boys'. I persisted, taking detailed observations of the concerning behaviours exhibited by the child and used this as evidence to prove my case. I scheduled numerous meetings with the family around their availability, many outside of regular work hours. By being patient, respectful, understanding, genuine and sincere in all my interactions I was finally able to breakthrough and gain the families trust. Having gained their trust the parents confided in me that they were going through a separation due to some issues, working collaboratively we were than able to come to an agreement that the child’s wellbeing was in jeopardy and some support measures needed to be implemented. With open and honest communication we were able to devise a working action plan. Over the following weeks we took detailed observations of the strategies, changes and how effective they were. Strategies that were ineffective became obsolete and the management plan was reworked with working strategies. By providing...

...“April Kudson!” shouted the police officer, loudly and carelessly ticking off the roll call. The sounds of juvenile prisoners screaming in anger, kicking on the concrete walls in frustration and the banging on the hard, cold metal bars started echoing in the gloomy hallways. April couldn’t catch her breath, “How could my life come to this? Seventeen years of trying to survive in misery and i ended up in this hell-hole.” Her head was spinning, blood rapidly rushing to her head all at once. She felt a firm hand wrapped around her neck tightly, “Getting released today, huh? Well here’s my present, happy birthday bitch!” screamed a girl, jealousy in her eyes and flared nostrils like a true savage. Five against one, bulky girls with tattoo sleeves all crowded April, pounded and kicked her until she was choking on her own blood, wounds gushed out pain, anger, humiliation. The police officers aggressively pried and tackled the girls off April. Sadly enough this was the least amount of torment she had felt in years. April was finally released that very same day, 18th of September. Stepping out into the sun, feeling the heat, sending a satisfying shiver down your spine, that should feel liberating but all she could feel was remorse and the scorching sun burning her skin. And there she was, the devil herself, Mrs. Hornburg, of all the people in West Virginia she had to be the head of Greenwood orphanage. She gave a coy smirk as she saw April coming down, her dark brown hair blowing in...

...through creative ways. This concept of employee engagement are related to the four elements of the MARS model of individual behaviour and results – Motivation (M), ability (A), role perception (R) and situational factors (S). These factors directly influence an employee’s voluntary behaviour and overall performance; if any of these factors weakens, employee performance decreases. Therefore, by ensuring that these factors are fulfilled, an employee’s performance will improve, leading to an enhancement in employee engagement. The first factor, motivation, refers to the forces within a person that influence the direction along which he or she engages their effort, the amount of effort invested in achieving the goal and persistence of voluntary behaviour. To motivate employees, employers must have a good relationship with employees and uncover the driving force that pushes them on. To realise this, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs differentiates the 5 levels of needs that an individual must meet in order to achieve the next level. The first level refers to an employee’s needs of having a good salary and working conditions. This can be achieved...

...Performance Persistence in Entrepreneurship 1. Introduction In this paper, we address two basic questions: Is there performance persistence in entrepreneurship? And, if so, why? Our answer to the first question is yes: all else equal, a venture-capital-backed entrepreneur who succeeds in a venture (by our definition, starts a company that goes public) has a 30% chance of succeeding in his next venture. By contrast, first-time entrepreneurs have only an 18% chance of succeeding and entrepreneurs who previously failed have a 20% chance of succeeding. The answer to the second question of why there is performance persistence is more complex. Performance persistence – for example, among mutual fund managers, stock analysts, or football players – is usually taken as evidence of skill. This is certainly the most straightforward explanation of our finding. Indeed, we will provide additional evidence to support this view. However, in the context of entrepreneurship, there may be another force at work. The perception of performance persistence – the belief that successful entrepreneurs are more skilled than unsuccessful ones – can induce real performance persistence. This would be the case if suppliers and customers are more likely to commit resources to firms that they perceive to be more likely to succeed based on the entrepreneur’s track record. This perception of performance persistence mitigates the coordination problem in which suppliers and customers are unwilling to commit resources...

...Persistence and qualitative change The metaphysical idea of and object persisting over time brings rise to a lot of debate on how we can properly identify a thing as it experiences qualitative change over time. The main issue that arises when talking about persistence over time is whether we can identify the initial thing we are observing as a different entity as time progresses and it undergoes qualitative change. For example is some thing we identify as “x”, that goes through a qualitative change at time T1, the same as the thing “x” at time T2 after the change was implemented. There are many different views on this topic and I will introduce three of them and then select the one I think is most probable. The first view is the standard view which states that an object “x” persisting through time exist entirely at both T1 and T2 regardless of qualitative change. This view in my opinion is not very strong it seems as if it aims to just disregard what we know about change and the implication of logical conditions. I refuse to believe that an object can both change and be the same thing as it was before. Using the rusting of iron we can clearly see that the item “iron” clearly has a different set of inherent properties at two different points in time. At T1 it is not rusted and at T2 it is rusted the change in color, texture, and even chemical composition leads me to believe that we are simply talking about two different items. This clearly violates the principal of non-contradiction...

...painting while in school, and much of his work was admired by his fellow students and teachers. It would be in 1931 when Dali would create one of his most memorable pieces of work to date –the Persistence of Memory. Dali, also created arts such as Metamorphosis of Narcissus in 1937 and The Elephants in 1948. The Metamorphosis of Narcissus retells the story of the tragic fate of Narcissus and Echo. Elephants on the other hand were specially selected animals which Dali used to contrast the difference between weight and structure, with the elephants carrying huge weight on their backs on top of brittle legs which were vastly elongated in order to substantially distort reality and strengthen the symbolism in his painting. Although Dali was a great artist, it was his unusual way of thinking and deep concern for dreams that gained him the most notoriety. Salvador Dali was born in 1904 in Figueres, Spain. In 1921, his mother passed away, and drew Dali closer to the arts. At first influenced by futurism, in 1924 Dalí came under the influence of the Italian painter de Chirico while in art school in Spain and by 1929 he had become a leader of Surrealism. His precisely realistic style enhances the obsessively nightmarish effect of many of his paintings. Among his best-known works is Persistence of Memory with its strangely melting clocks. In 1940 Dalí escaped from Nazi-occupied France and emigrated to the United States. He wrote The Secret Life of Salvador Dalí and also made surrealist...

...Enhancing the Animated Movie-goers Experience with the Science of Gas Dynamics Angelia Romero Intro to Physical Science Professor Paquette Enhancing the Animated Movie-goers Experience with the Science of Gas Dynamics The goal of animated films has been immerse the audience in a fantasy world while maintaining some semblance of reality in those worlds. Various techniques are used to generate motion picture animation but they have all taken advantage of a phenomenon called “persistence of vision”. The “persistence of vision” is where the brain reads a rapid series of images as an unbroken movement. From the beginning, the animation was achieved by filming thousands and thousands of still images that were edited together to produce one continuous reel of film. Teams of artists meticulously drew each frame were tasked with capturing the aesthetic of the film while also mimicking the physics of the real world. Animation where each frame or cell is hand drawn and then compiled is called traditional or classical animation. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, generally considered the first full length animated feature using tradition animation, required 1,500,000 hand-drawn and colored frames to make the movie. As computing technology grew less expensive, movie studios like Disney gradually transitioned from the millions of hand paintings to computer based animation. Pixar finally broke the mold for animated films by releasing the world’s first computer animated feature...

She remains focused and continues to work on these assignments, while only getting up to ask for help, until she has mastered the subjects’ respective goal(s). When D.S. finds a mathematics classroom assignment to be difficult, she often becomes frustrated, fidgets with items on her desk, and refuses to continue work on the problem. Her mother states that she must be prompted and encouraged, in order to remain with, and continue to work on, the task at hand. With the prompts and encouragement, D.S. continues with the assignment with determination. Her mother adds that D.S. often states, “I know I can do it. I just got a little annoyed ‘cause I wasn’t understanding. I know I can do it”. During testing sessions, D.S. appeared to be eager to complete all tasks presented to her, and continued to work on all tasks without excess encouragement or prompting. She stated, “I love to learn and I love to work...

...WALL-E may be the cutest Pixar character ever, even though he is just a trash compactor with binocular like eyes. WALL-E was a movie created by Pixar to challenge themselves and as well as the world. It was released in 2008 and was directed by Andrew Stanton. It was written by Andrew Stanton and Pete Docter and the movie starred Ben Burtt as WALL-E, Elissa Knight as EVE, and Jeff Garlin as the Captain (of the ship called Axiom). Working along with Pixar Animation Studios, Walt Disney Pictures released WALL-E in Canada and the United States on June 27, 2008, and it blew the competition out of the water as it made $23.2 million on its opening day, $63 million on its opening weekend in almost four thousand theatres, all the while coming in first at the box office. This film’s genre is not typical. It is a computer-animated post apocalyptic comedy science romantic fiction film. Although it may seem like a lot of genres to employ, Pixar successfully combines them to make an engaging cinematic experience. Similar to the genre, the introduction of the movie is not typical. The first forty minutes of WALL-E has little to zero dialogue and with little human presence as well. This silence is beautiful as the audience is introduced to a desolate abandoned world with only the little trash compactor known as WALL-E occupying it. The movie serves as a cinematic poem of beauty and wit with darker implications. The film is a commentary on pressing issues in society such as consumerism, corporatism...

... The animated Disney pixel film wall-e was released/made in 2008 and was great success and was able to warm the hearts of many people. In this movie we saw that wall-e was left alone with nothing, but his pet cockroach on earth, after the human left earth because it wasn't safe to live there anymore. In this film we know that wall-e is a solar powered machine, unlike some robots that need maintenance wall-e can keep going by resting in the sun. Everyday wall-e wakes up and collect the trash that the humans left behind and crushes them into small cubes to make trash skyscrapers, like in the story of Noah, God made Noah build a boat, so Jesus can start start again and more people can believe in him because most people just forgot about him, like they did on planet earth. Now I'm going to write about how both worlds uninhabitable. Wall-e was the only one left on earth and was basically assigned a job to clean earth up. Wall-e took his job seriously he would wake up every morning and have to stack cubes or rubbish and make big buildings and skyscraper to take some of the population away. This is similar to Noah's ark, God had flooded earth so it was uninhabitable to live, he did this to so people would believe, in him again because they were very disrespectful and they would take things granted, like the people did on earth (genesis1:2 "and the earth was form and void and darkness was upon the face of the deep"). Wall-e would take things from the junk yard, that interested him...

...Inside Out is a 3D Disney Pixar animated film released earlier this year on June 19th, directed by Pete Docter and Ronnie Del Carmen. The film is about an 11-year-old girl named Riley, whose life completely changes as she moves from Minnesota to San Francisco, while simultaneously following the story of the emotions inside her mind – Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Fear, and Anger – as they guide her through this drastic change in her life. As the story progresses, we follow Joy and Sadness as they attempt to return back to Headquarters, after Sadness and Joy squabble with each over Riley’s core memories; ultimately leaving Riley only with Disgust, Fear and Anger to guide her, eventually allowing her to slowly fall into depression. The film is quite the whirlwind of emotions, allowing the viewer smile and laugh but also to cry and grief. I myself shed a few tears after watching the movie. Inside Out also differentiates itself from most children movies in which it contains no traditional villains, but the story line surrounds the internal struggle of Riley aging from a young girl to a teenager. The film is fundamentally something we all know and share which are the emotions inside our brains, but is executed so uniquely and is yet again another Disney Pixar animated masterpiece. The animated film follows the dramatic progression of exposition, complication, and denouement. Although, the film is significantly comprised of mostly complications as it is essential that Joy and Sadness return...

...For Harrison Killian, a sixteen year old student in the High School Equivalency Program at Sullivan BOCES, the Arts have been a driving force behind his passion and ability to make his mark in the Stop-motion Animation/Film Industry. Harrison first got interested in movies when he was a small boy playing with his brother in the backyard creating movies. By the time Harrison was nine; he was playing in a band and writing short stories. When he was 12, he started working with a camera and using still shots to create his first short clip about Red Bull. At age 15, Harrison got involved with stop-motion, making his own sets, writing his own storylines and creating his own characters out of clay. His bedroom is his move set. This is where he creates the models of his sets, shoots the film and produces his movies. For those who don’t understand what stop-motion is, it is similar to the animation that was used by Walt Disney, where cartoonist would draw one frame at a time and flip through the frames to make motion. Harrison utilized a similar process using clay figures. One movement of a figure is made up a hundreds of images. “The coolest thing about what I do is I’m using my artistic ability and my imagination. Really I’m just playing,” said Harrison, “When I create an artificial set I can make as realistic as I want. Although I spend all of my time working on sets and making movies, I just love it.” Today at age 16, he has already published 14 Stop-motion Short movies...

...DreamWorks Studios has done a great job in the movie industry. With their most popular movies consisting of animated children’s films, there’s no wonder as to why those types of movies do the best. Even though children’s films are aimed at kids, anyone can watch them. You can be a kid, a teenager, or an adult, the movie would be entertaining and appropriate to all ages. Unlike movies aimed for a more mature audience, a kid couldn’t watch all parts of it as it would be inappropriate for them, or the movie would not be entertaining enough for a kid. This is why DreamWorks’ best selling movies are ones that are animated and aimed towards a young audience, with popular titles like How to Train Your Dragon, Shrek, and of course, Madagascar. The way that these three movies, in particular Madagascar, became such big hits is they followed - in what is my opinion - the criteria for children’s films: likable characters, an easy to follow but still entertaining story, and aspects that make it appealing for the parents to want to take their child. Madagascar is a story about four friends: Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Gloria the hippo, and Melman the giraffe, who have lived in a zoo all their lives. It starts off with Marty daydreaming about running around in the wild. Then he is brought back to reality when his friends get his attention by celebrating his birthday. At first, he is happy and everything is going fine, but he feels he is missing something, the wild. So at the end of the...
