Leadership Philosophy Hinds Leadership is the ability to gain followership. Whether accomplished by force or persuasion, if people follow, you are leading them. Good leadership can use either force or persuasion in an instance; however, the end result should be a desire to follow. Constantly having to use force to gain followership is a sign of a weak leader.
Upon reporting to Air Station Kodiak, Aleutian Patrol (ALPAT) Division, I had many supervisors. ALPAT was run as one big shop, not divided by ratings, so I didn’t always work with or for AETs. As the new guy, I wanted to learn as much as I could, as fast as I could so this seemed like it would be the perfect environment. I soon learned it was not as ideal as I thought. Maintenance was very fast paced due to planes constantly coming and going for deployments. Instead of being taught how to perform maintenance, I was told to read Maintenance Procedure Cards (MPC) and to ask if I had any questions. When I would approach most anyone with a question, I would get an answer followed by some sort of derogatory …show more content…
Bad leaders are the easiest to learn from because you decide very quickly that you do not want to be like them. Good leaders however are more difficult. Many good leaders are not trying to be that, they are just trying to get the job done. Their personality is what inspires followership. Their conviction draws you in and makes you want to perform to their level. To become them is impossible; however learning what drives them is a start in the right direction. My AMT1 from Kodiak was also my Maintenance Officer from Traverse City. The same person with new positional power, but all he needed was to continue to be himself. From the Commanding Officer to third class petty officers on the hanger deck, when he talked everyone listened. I never saw him mad, or raise his voice. To have this ability to make impressions and differences, you need communication skills. One who cannot communicate well will never be a leader. ...Gandhi's Hind Swaraj takes the form of a dialogue between two characters, The Reader and The Editor. The Reader essentially serves as the typical Indian countryman whom Gandhi would have been addressing with Hind Swaraj. The Reader voices the common beliefs and arguments of the time concerning Indian Independence. Gandhi, The Editor, explains why those arguments are flawed and interject his own arguments. As The Editor Gandhi puts it, "it is my duty patiently to try to remove your prejudice." In the dialogue which follows, Gandhi outlines four themes which structure his arguments. 1. First, Gandhi argues that ‘Home Rule is Self Rule’. He argues that it is not enough for the British to leave only for Indians to adopt a British-styled society. As he puts it, some "want English rule without the Englishman ... that is to say, [they] would make India English. And when it becomes English, it will be called not Hindustan but Englishtan. This is not the Swaraj I want.” 2. Gandhi also argues that Indian independence is only possible through passive resistance. In fact, more than denouncing violence, Gandhi argues that it is counter-productive; instead, he believes, “The force of love and pity is infinitely greater than the force of arms. Born and raised in a Hindu, merchant caste, family in coastal Gujarat, western India, and trained in law at the Inner Temple, London, Gandhi first employed non-violent civil disobedience as an expatriate lawyer in South Africa, in the resident Indian community's struggle for civil rights. After his return to India in 1915, he set about organising peasants, farmers, and urban labourers to protest against excessive land-tax and discrimination. Assuming leadership of the Indian National Congress in 1921, Gandhi led nationwide campaigns for easing poverty, expanding women's rights, building religious and ethnic amity, ending untouchability, but above all for achieving Swaraj or self-rule. Historical experience provided the base; Allama Iqbal gave it a philosophical explanation; Quaid-i-Azam translated it into a political reality; and the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan, by passing Objectives Resolution in March 1949, gave it legal sanction.
