One day at my house I was doing a nerf gun war, then it was the end of the game because of one reason. I was going for a jump shot on the coach, and then I see a blanket I slip on it. Then I put my arm out so I could catch myself, and put myself in a push up position. All of a sudden we hear a crack My right arm was broken I was rushed to a hospital, and they took X-rays then prescribed some medicine. When I got home, I took medicine then went to bed, the most painful part was either breaking it, or they popping it back in place with me awake. This wasn’t the last time it was going to happen, I was at school in fifth grade. I run to go through the basketball court then they run all the way from the other side of the court then I get knocked

Men or Children

...Name: Tutor: Course: Date: Men or Children? The gangster is a fictional story written by Colson Whitehead in 2008. It is a short story about African- American teenagers and its setting is in Sag Harbor, in 1985. The story begins with a question, “When did you get out?” The opening question emphasizes the title of the story on a particular notion to the reader. In the fictional story, the gangster, Benji and Reggie are twin brothers of ten months apart. They grew up together inseparably in every aspect. It was common for them to be seen together and when they were not, people always question them on where the other is. High school and puberty brought the difference between them physically. They would be seen away from each other severally, and they even looked different physically with Benji being skinny while Reggie looked chubby. Benji and Reggie are brought up in an upper middle class family, and their parents own a beach house in Sag harbor where they go to during the summers. In the summer of 1985, Benji was 15 years old, and Reggie was 14 years old. During the summer when the whole family left for their beach house, the boys would be left alone for some time when their parents went back to the city to work during the weekdays. Benji and Reggie are described, in the story, as Siamese twins when they were young, describing their inseparable nature. This is clearly brought out by the language used as quoted “Where is the surgeon, who is gifted enough to...

Casablanca

...Conversion narratives are crucial to World War II films. They were a regular part of Hollywood movies featuring cynical, self-centered antiheros who only cared about themselves. The selfish hero in the face of absolute need converts to a selfless wartime activist dedicating time and resources to the cause and war effort. Casablanca, released in 1942, is a film that portrayed the consequences of having to convert to war. The movie can be seen as giving purpose to war and encouraging the American people to support the mobilization of their troops. The need to convert to war was imperative at this moment in time. Casablanca brilliantly explained to Americans the reason for the fight through the fictional conversion of Rick Blaine and corrupt Vichy police Captain Louis Renault to self-sacrifice and war. The opening scene for the movie sets up establishing shots of imprisoned Europe. A roundabout refugee trail sprung up in order to get to Lisbon, which was the disembarkation point to the new world. The narrator, in a newsreel format, says people looked for freedom in the Americas. The Moroccan city of Casablanca attracted people from all over as many refugees were trying to get out of Europe. They wait in Casablanca. The first scene shows Casablanca as a very police state with a great military presence. The busyness of the exotic open market the camera frame shows the city as being very walled in. People are trapped and they can’t move or go anywhere. The murder of two German...

Wilfred Owen

...Wilfred Owen wrote his poems as an attempt to stop the war and to make people realise how horrific it was. In a thorough examination of the poems "Anthem for Doomed Youth", "Dulce et Decorum Est" and "Disabled" and also with some reference to other works by Owen, it can be seen that he uses different poetical features, styles and methods. Wilfred Owen addresses his readers from different stances right up to him addressing the reader personally. This method is very effective in evoking feelings from great anger and bitterness to terrible sadness and even sarcasm, making the reader sometimes even feel guilty. Whichever way he chooses to portray the pity of the war the end result is always the same. "Dulce Et Decorum Est" is a direct attack at the people in Britain who had been taken in by the propaganda drive by telling them the truth of what life is really like at the front and in what conditions their sons, fathers, brothers etc. are in. "Dulce Et Decorum Est" consists of four unequal stanzas, the first two in sonnet form, and the last two in a looser structure. The first stanza sets the scene of soldiers limping back from the front. The authorial stance is of Owen telling us of his own personal experiences. The second stanza focuses on one man who could not get his gas mask on in time. This is a recurring nightmare that Owen has, where he sees one man "drown" in the gas and in the third stanza he describes how the man "plunges" at Owen, "guttering, choking, drowning." This...

Minimalist Connotations in 'Fight Club'

...arguments usually question or celebrate the transgressive potentials of the book (Giroux; Mendieta), or address issues of masculinity brought into the fore by their literary and cinematic representations emergent in the same decade (Tuss; Friday). However, few, if any, have addressed the literary aspirations of the text and its author. Although none of the approaches to the thematic concerns of Fight Club are unjustified, in the argument that follows I will suggest that conclusions drawn and critical judgments passed have been hasty, and not only failed to take into account the formal aspects of story-telling, but that the narrative features of Palahniuk’s text have largely went unexplored, and constitute a blind spot of the reception. Critics condemning or acclaiming the novel, and, indeed, many a cultic reader of Palahniuk ignored Fight Club as a literary narrative, and have inadvertently been repeating the catchphrases of the text, either reinforcing or trying to undermine what they have understood as their meaning. I see the significance of Palahniuk’s fiction and the literary event of Fight Club’s publication in somewhat different terms. Palahniuk’s emphasis and continued insistence on minimalism suggest that his fiction is properly understood as belonging to a literary tradition whose evaluation remains troubled and, for a large part, unsettled. Nevertheless,...

Book Review

...Bryce Beeman HIUS 222-B02 9/21/15 An American Soldier in World War 1: Book Review World War 1 was supposed to be the war to end all wars, but what it really did was propel the world into a generation of military innovation which lead to World War 2. It created a military monster in the United States and put them at the forefront of all world issues to come. Although many books and memoirs of the war have been written, there have been few that encompass a personal perspective along with providing an overview of what was happening during the war like the book An American Soldier in World War 1. Following the letters of soldier George Browne, Editor David L. Snead was able to create a picture of ordinary everyday problems surrounding the soldiers while including the big picture of the war and how these soldiers were helping the allied forces win. The United States officially entered World War 1 in April of 1917 after much deliberation and a little pushing by the allied forces. George Browne, who we follow through his letters to his girlfriend Martha, enlisted in the army in July and was assigned to the 117th Engineers Regiment, 42nd division. When the United States entered the war they were just simply not prepared and had very little time to train an entire army to be battle ready. The army lacked experienced officers and had a shortage on everything from underwear to guns. In George’s case he was often sleeping on the ground while training. “I didn’t tell you that they...

Band of Brothers

...Krysta Desper Mr. Connors U.S. History I CPS 10 C 17 January 2013 Band of Brothers In the summer of 1942, young men in Army training at Camp Toccoa, Georgia, are given an opportunity to be part of a unique unit of paratroopers. This unit offers $50 dollars a month extra for hazardous duty pay, which draws a lot of the volunteers. These men begin a very rigorous training regimen under Captain Sobel, whom most of the men come to hate. Their training includes basic infantry skills - use and maintenance of various weapons, map reading, and communications. They also practice jumping with parachutes, beginning with towers of varying heights, then to the actual jump from an airplane. The hardest part of their training is a run they must make, up to the top of Mount Currahee, which is an Indian name that means We Stand Alone Together. After several long months of this training, the men of Easy Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne, are shipped to Uppottery, England, where they continue their training. They are being prepared for the greatest military maneuver ever undertaken; the D-Day invasion of Normandy. The 506 is to parachute behind the German lines and work their way back towards the beach, to meet the Allies there, and hopefully cut off German supply lines to the front in the process. On June 6, 1944, the invasion comes, after having been postponed for bad weather. The drops do not go well, due to anti-aircraft fire and low visibility, but as the men hit the ground, they...

...her everything from her religion to her very life. The attributes of Cho-cho-san are not exclusive to this character only but imposed on all Asian women. The western presupposition of some certain fixed and bounded Asian attributes defines the identity of Asian women and thus, creates an image of the sacrificial and submissive Oriental women. Moreover, the historical backgrounds of Hwang’s Butterfly and Puccini’s Butterfly are, in fact, the extension of gender tension to international power struggle. Cho-cho-san’s love story happens in the Meiji Period in which Japan first opened its door to foreigners; while Gallimard and Song Liling begins having an affair in the 1960s, in the midst of Cold War. Hwang’s M. Butterfly parodies Puccini’s Madama Butterfly by reversing the conventional narrative on the gender identities and the power relationship between the West and East. In other words, M. Butterfly dissolves the constructed identities of male and female as well as projects the shifting gender identities onto the fluidity and mobility of the East/West power relations....

Aviation and the Military

...only on our society as a whole but also the United States military and the way wars would be fought forever. Because of this one specific day in history the Wright brothers are accredited for the first of countless days in our history that we contribute what we know today as aviation. On that one day, the brothers sustained a total of four flights with only a small twelve horse power engine with the longest flight lasting a mere fifty-nine seconds at a distance of 852 feet. On the fourth flight of the day, Flyer 1 tumbled and crashed. Obviously not all was lost, history was made and inventions in the aviation industry began to grow. The historical first flight by Orville and Wilbert Wright did not make the front page news; it was very trivial headlines at the time. For instance, page ten of the Washington Times article dated 19 December 1903 in column four, High Gale No Bar to Flying Machine. The article described the flying machine and how the brothers got off the ground. The New York Tribune 19 December 1903 also had a small article but not until page five; Flying Machine Works Successful Trial by Ohio Men with Machine on Box Kite Plan. By 1909 The Wright brothers had set up an Airplane factory in Dayton Ohio, it was to be the first and the largest airship factory in the country. The plan was to produce four airplanes per month and employ eighty people. The target market was for personal use. There was not a realization of the importance of this new flying machine...

...because this film contains much information about political statements, philosophy, and religions. Children of Men tells the story of Theo Faron, one of the many bureaucrats from the energy department in UK. He seems like a common citizen, but does something uncommon later. In fact, the first thirty minutes is not quite interesting for me, but things has changed significantly after Julian is killed by shot. Later, Theo becomes a hero by rescuing Kee’s child, the child of miracle. This film has many advanced and significant aspects on many perspectives. So this paper is going to analyze the unique features in it. Narrative The story is located at the United Kingdom in 2027. At that time, human beings have experienced 18 years of infertility. Children of Men is a film with realistic narrative, because the story runs chronologically. And it follows the classic five-part narrative structure. We can clearly recognize the introduction: Theo hears the news about the death of baby Diego. Conflict and obstacles are throughout the story that Theo finds out Luke’s plan and helps Kee escape to “The Tomorrow”. Later climax comes with the ceasing fire of government army and revolt when they see Kee’s kid. And by the end of the film, we can hear kids laughing, which leaves us a hope that human beings can continue on. Meanwhile, this film contains many nondiegetic elements, which always attracts me and let me pause and investigate. At the beginning, the death of baby Diego comes from the news report...

Make Sure You'Re Right, Then Go Ahead

...Davy Crockett Gun Craze by Sarah Nilsen In April 2005, sixty thousand members of the National Rifle Association gathered in Houston, Texas for their 134th Annual Meeting. The keynote speaker for the event was embattled U.S. House Majority Leader, Representative Tom De Lay. After his speech, De Lay was joined on stage by Lee Hamel dressed as Davy Crockett in full buckskin attire and a coonskin hat. Hamel presented De Lay with a handcrafted flintlock rifle that he had made for the event with his mentor, Cecil Brooks. The presentation of the reproduction rifle to De Lay is part of a long NRA tradition that began in 1955 when Walt Disney‟s Davy Crockett series first appeared on television. When Charlton Heston received his handcrafted flintlock rifle in 1989, he uttered his famous words, “From my cold dead hands.” President Ronald Reagan and Vice President Dick Cheney also joined the list of those who received facsimile Davy Crockett flintlock rifles from a man dressed in Crockett buckskin attire. This tradition is part of the NRA‟s efforts to represent the gun as a key instrument in the founding of the United States. It secured this ideological representation in part by appropriating the mythology of early American heroes like Davy Crockett. Davy Crockett became emblematic of the gun mythology of early American life. This mythology was synergized by the NRA and popularized through children‟s television to promote a conception of the role of the gun in American cultural...

Isolation

...Brownstones Isolation is an important issue that the narrator highlights in the novel ‘Brown Girl, Brownstones’. Discuss the importance of isolation in the novel using textual evidence from the novel. One of the themes in the novel ‘Brown Girl, Brownstones’ is the issue of isolation. The narrator skilfully crafts a riveting story about a group of Bajan immigrants in 1939 who make Brooklyn, New York their home. The narrator employs a range of narrative techniques to highlight this important issue, however there is a heavy dependency on setting, language and characterisation which simultaneously bring to the forefront the several forms of isolation encoded in the novel. The narrator details the isolation and plight of the Bajan community who have come to New York. Set against the backdrop of the effects of World War ІІ and the Great Depression, the narrator pays great attention to the Bajan community by observing the inter-relationship of the Boyce family members and the friendship of the Bajan women. The narrator uses setting as a narrative technique in highlighting the important theme of isolation in the novel. She has placed the Boyce family in Brooklyn where they lease a brownstone house. Both the Boyce family and Bajan community altogether live and share close relationships with one another but it seems that the immigrants are secluded from the wider city. The narrator’s description of their community depicts a sense of segregation between them and the locals. The narrator...

Nixon and his administration thought that if they could just mirror the North, they could achieve the same level of success. The Tet Offensive showed that guerilla warfare could be extremely effective, but only if the soldiers are capable All in all, the Tet Offensive was fully responsible for the change in public perception and military tactics regarding Vietnam. Before the offense, the American public had some doubt but most believed that victory was easy and near. Once the Viet Cong strike, Americans realized that the war would continue to wage on. The North was capable of matching in troops against the United States and so the war would still be a stalemate but at a higher level of casualties. The offense isolated Johnson from the public and allowed the public to make a more moderate decision, to withdraw troops and back off. Section 3:...

...The accounts of the Civil War are told in numerous ways throughout the times of history from many viewpoints. We see diaries of soldiers, elite white women, and some slaves. However, there are few accounts from the civilian point of view or the comparisons between how average groups in each section felt and acted. Even though civilians were affected by the Civil War the most, their accounts are not put at the forefront of historical documents of this time. Southerners had to go through the crumbling of not only the institution of slavery, but the downfall of their economical and social aspects as well. Northerners had to deal with their society ever changing and the holding to their values. The civilians who lived along the border states were...
