Personal Narrative: Lacrosse Goalie

Lacrosse Goalie It was an unseasonably hot day in late April of 2012 when I first stepped into that white ring of glory that surround the lacrosse goal (commonly referred to as the “crease”). This would be the kickoff of my Lacrosse experience and a monumental part of my life. Normally, I played the position of either defense or midfield. If you have never played Lacrosse and do not know the positions, you should know that in midfield, there is a ton of running back and forth across the field A LOT (that’s crucial for later). Anyways, my best friend at the time, Madison, was the goalie at the time. The coach, a very kind but strict woman in her early forties, directed us to our various positions on the field. Granted, we were all in third grade, so we needed a little guidance. I marched onto the freshly cut grass of the field in my neon orange and pink cleats and planted my feet in the started position for left-wing midfield. We had played that team before because I remembered this one girl--Number 23-- was the size of an eighth grader, constantly bested me in speed but not agility, and always shot hard and precisely on the goal. She was virtually impossible to beat. Naturally, I was assigned to her, 4’ 6” 60lbs me against a girl who could fight for the WWE. I was positively petrified. I spent the first half of the game just barely keeping the ball out of her reach but once she got the ball I couldn’t keep up. Finally, after what felt like the longest 30 minutes of my life, half time rolled around. Madison, debilitated and stressed to the max from the pressure of protecting the goal, burst into tears. She simple couldn’t handle being goalie any longer. The coach turned to the team and inquired someone to volunteer. Everyone was terrified at that point considering Madison was bawling her precious little eyes out (bless her heart). I was one of the only people on the team to have ever
