Personal Narrative: My Interview With A Teacher At Roseway Heights

I recently interviewed a 5th grade teacher at Roseway Heights. My intention for doing this interview was to get a better understanding of how teachers go about giving a lecture, how they chose to run an activity, and how they keep the students actively focused. The teacher I interviewed is actually an assistant teacher who is currently enrolled in grad school to become a teacher. The kids refer to her as Ms. Daniels. Her role in the classroom is to assist the main teacher by working one on one with the students and grading. She is also tasked with teaching lessons when the main teacher is absent. The reason she is in this particular classroom has to do with the teacher having some health related issues and the class being a bit more rowdy than the others.
The lesson she gave while I was observing her was first, a brief history of Halloween (since it was Halloween that day) and then a writing workshop that focused on drawing from your…show more content… I mainly wanted to know the basis of her strategy when teaching the material. She told me that one of her main strategies is to try new things and see what the kids can work with best. To me it seems like this method may have some potential risks because by doing a trial and error they might not be getting enough done by the end of the term. She told me that there are times where it doesn’t work out the way she would like it to, but she has her reasons for doing so. It mainly has to do with her not wanting the kids to feel like she is wasting their time or doing something that they can’t connect to at all. For the rest of the interview she described what inspired the activities she ran. A lot of it was based off finding a way to connect with everyone in the classroom, especially the few students of color. She told me that this is one of the hardest parts of teaching.
