Predictor variables (high school grade-point average, academic self-efficacy, and optimism) and moderator variables (academic expectations and self-perceived coping ability) were measured at the end of the first academic quarter and were related to classroom performance, personal adjustment, stress, and health, measured at the end of the school year. Academic self-efficacy and optimism were strongly related to performance and adjustment, both directly on academic performance and indirectly through expectations and coping perceptions (challenge-threat evaluations) on classroom performance, stress, health, and overall satisfaction and commitment to remain in school. ...Learning Letter. Through out the course of the semester, I have distinguished my strengths in writing apart from my areas of improvement. There have been various strategies used to come to this conclusion, the most important of them being able to discuss and revise in depth the context of my own work. Often times, I rush to get assignments completed that I lack the simple yet forgotten tactic of rereading my work. Maneuvering with words and ideas within our circle has become an efficient way of improving the way we elaborate and expand in our writing. College courses are over-all quite the transition from the typical high school setting, I have noticed that here the instructor is a lot more open to our feedback and the essays have less of a structure giving the student the freedom to write in a way they feel comfortable sharing with their classmates. I had never considered myself to be an avid writer, as described in my narrative essay. I was well aware of the struggle a college English course would bring, I noticed that these past couple of weeks haven’t been easy but I like the direction I’m heading. The way my writing has developed in this short amount of time has been tremendous progress as opposed to the previous strategies I was being imposed to. Although writing remains our primary information technology, today when we think about the impact of technology on our habits of mind, we think primarily of the computer. My first encounters with how computers change the way we think came soon after I joined the faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the late 1970s, at the end of the era of the slide rule and the beginning of the era of the personal computer. At a lunch for new faculty members, several senior professors in engineering complained that the transition from slide rules to calculators had affected their students' ability to deal with issues of scale. When students used slide rules, they had to insert decimal points themselves. The professors insisted that that required students to maintain a mental sense of scale, whereas those who relied on calculators made frequent errors in orders of magnitude. Additionally, the students with calculators had lost their ability to do "back of the envelope" calculations, and with that, an intuitive feel for the material. The use of extensive clinical interviews allowed for exploration in great depth of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors as they negotiated childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, and adulthood. At the 25-year follow-up, a comparison group of their peers from the same community was added. Described in rich clinical detail, the findings highlight the unexpected gulf between growing up in intact versus divorced families, and the difficulties children of divorce encounter in achieving love, sexual intimacy, and commitment to marriage and parenthood.
