...I went to Chicago last year with the band at it was quite the experience. Last year the band had an opportunity to go to chicago to play in the Mcdonald's parade, It was a great experience. The bus ride however was not very fun. It was a very long bus ride but I had friends to talk to which made it ok and we even had a pretty good time on the way there. When we actually got to the toll road to get into chicago it was a eightlane road which is something I had never seen up to that point which was very interesting to see. We got there at night and it was really dark and some parts of the town we drove through looked kinda scary. When we got to our hotel and the part of town we stayed in was pretty nice however I still would not want to go out alone at night. The night we got there since I was a tuba player I helped unload the trailer. We had to carry our tubas down the stairs and I don't like carrying my tuba because I am not the strongest tuba player, all the other tuba players we’re six foot or taller. After we could find our way to our room into for about 10 minutes some guy told us how to get to our room. Our room had a great view of the Chicago River and Trump Tower. A storyteller at heart and self-described “people’s painter,” Andrews focused on figurative social commentary depicting the struggles, atrocities, and everyday occurrences in the world, but he was not satisfied to use art as a substitute for action. Benny Andrews was born on November 13, 1930, in Plainview, Georgia, a small farming community three miles from Madison. Andrews was one of 10 children in a family of sharecroppers; raised while it was still segregated in the rural south, he grew up desperately poor. His mother, Viola, instilled in her ten children the importance of education, religion, and freedom of expression; his father, George, a self-taught artist, fueled their creativity with his drawings and illustrations. Although the entire family worked in the cotton fields as sharecroppers, Viola Andrews was adamant that her children attend school. Andrews's attendance was sporadic because he went only when he wasn't needed in the fields or when it rained. After several years at Plainview Elementary School, Andrews walked to Madison to attend Burney Street High School, and in 1948 he was the first member of his family to graduate. ...Narrative A narrative is a sequence of events that a narrator tells in story form. A narrator is a storyteller of any kind, whether the authorial voice in a novel or a friend telling you about last night’s party. Point of View The point of view is the perspective that a narrative takes toward the events it describes. First-person narration: A narrative in which the narrator tells the story from his/her own point of view and refers to him/herself as “I.” The narrator may be an active participant in the story or just an observer. When the point of view represented is specifically the author’s, and not a fictional narrator’s, the story is autobiographical and may be nonfictional (see Common Literary Forms and Genres below). This happens as tourists learn about marginal groups through educational tourism, engage in development projects with host-area residents, undertake pilgrimages that bring greater meaning and cohesiveness to an ethnic identity, or encounter stories that transform their view of social injustice and spur further action to reduce inequities. Tourism planning can produce a sense of reconciliation when it brings historically divided groups together. An example is found in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi, where a group of white and African American residents are collaborating to develop tourism projects designed around a narrative of reconciliation, while they use the process of tourism planning to work towards racial reconciliation within their community. It is not a surprise when we read novels with exciting and exhilarating characters that their complex situations lead to confused and unstable lifestyles. Exploring the life of Helga Crane in Nella Larson’s Quicksand and Clare Kendry in Larson’s Passing illustrates the issues the two protagonists face when the tone of their skin became a matter of focus and the results their decisions create. Both novels most likely are Nella Larson’s personal quest in a life of searching for acceptance. As an African American novelist during the Harlem Renaissance, Nella Larsen completed these two novels along with a few short stories. It is apparent that her stories dramatize situations Larsen faced during her actual lifetime. Her father, Peter Walker, was a West Indian man who died when Larsen was a young girl. Her mother, Marie Hanson Walker went on to marry a white man, Peter Larsen, which eventually began some internal racial issues for Nella. Nella struggled finding that sense of comfort and acceptance from her family and peers. Being raised in a lower- middle class white household, she felt like a black child that did not belong. ...Oroonoko’s Accidental Abolition Activist Ooronoko: or the Royal Slave is a story of a brave and young West African Prince who was taken from the Ivory Coast and sold into slavery in the northern part of South America by British Colonizers. A Caucasian female, who grew up in a world where people who were not white were barely seen as human beings especially if they were of African descent, narrates the novel. Ooronoko’s tale begins with the readers being greeted by the anonymous English female narrator who is waiting on a trip back to Europe from the plantation on South Africa that Ooronoko was sent. Early on in the story it becomes clear narrator completely intends to give an exceptionally detailed and vivid description of what exactly is taking place during her stay in South America and the goings on in Ooronoko’s life both before and after he becomes a slave. What the writer notices during her stay in these two foreign lands are very much what you would expect of someone who is seeing people and places for the first time. Often times when people are amazed by something or in a place for a first time, their discussions about it are usually long and explicit.
