Personal Response:
I really enjoyed reading Identical by Ellen Hopkins. This book is told through the first person point of view of both of the main characters. I like how the author really captures the reader's attention by getting straight to the point. This book was extremely suspenseful and I ended up reading this whole book in one day. I also liked how Kaeleigh and Raeanne take turns narrating the story with poems that often mirror each other, playing with repeated words and meaning. Some poems are visually styled, depicting the school bell, teardrops, broken hearts, keys and the bottle that symbolizes Ray Gardella. Kaeleigh and Raeanne both go through many ups and downs throughout the story and even when it seems like everything is going completely psychotic for the both of them the author made a really great ending to the book.
Plot:
Raeanne and Kaeleigh Gardella are the teenage daughters of two successful parents: dad Ray is a prominent judge and mom…show more content… However Kaeleigh is the main character. Kaeleigh is beautiful, polite and strong. Her character is very complex. She get’s taken advantage of her whole life to the point that she doesn’t know what to do so she becomes bulimic and suicidal. Kaeleigh changes drastically from the first to the last page of the book. It’s a hectic rollercoaster but it’s hard not to fall in love with her character.
Impacts of Setting:
In Identical the author never clearly states the setting of the story and since the author never reveals the location I would personally say that the setting must not have been that important if the author never mentioned it. There are, however, a few times that the author does say the girls are in school or in their home. I think that the setting of the school is very important because that is where the twins are able to get help from others and confide in people whom they trust.
