Rhetorical Analysis On Quindlen

...Friday in 2008 was not the only individual to be killed in such a gruesome manner. An eerily similar situation occurred to a pharmacist trying to shop at a Target in 2011. The items sought after by the shoppers were not what caused the two deaths. Likewise, the majority of stuff itself is not creating problems in the world, in fact, it’s finding new, innovative ways to fix them. The real issues at hand are the people with access to the growing amount of elaborate commercial products. That is the theme Quindlen is attempting to convey in her report: to be happy, people need to be smart and spend their money on things that they need or that actually matter. Generally, I agree with Quindlen’s overall message, however I do not agree with her essay as a whole. Many of her examples and arguments were...

Writing Papers in 3rd

...Converting Ideas to Third Person for College Level Writing by Professor Adri-anne Jones In most instances, college freshmen enter college knowing how to write their ideas in first person, I and second person, you but have had little if any experience with third person writing. Therefore, many first-year college students are not prepared to write the typical academic essay and research paper. For the most part, the purpose of writing in the academic environment is to inform, to report, and to persuade. Therefore, the writing style is expected to be formal since students will be engaged in writing research papers, essays, book reports, critiques, proposals, and responses to literary writings. In these formal and academic writing situations—in most cases—the focus is on the subject and not the writer. Therefore, it is crucial that college freshmen learn to master third person writing before they complete their course requirements for freshman composition. Even though argument and persuasive writing is based on the writer’s personal opinion or position on an issue, the writer’s opinion is most often presented in third person. Rather than to write I think . . . or I believe . . . or I feel . . ., the writer should simply state his or her opinion without making a first person reference. For example, the academic writer should avoid such statements like I feel that the restoration of prayer in public schools could likely remedy the lack of discipline in classrooms...

...The very thing that is now called the Christian religion was already in existence in Ancient Egypt, long before the adoption of the New Testament. The British Egyptologist, Sir E. A. Wallis Budge, wrote in his book, The Gods of the Egyptians [1969], The new religion (Christianity) which was preached there by St. Mark and his immediate followers, in all essentials so closely resembled that which was the outcome of the worship of Osiris, Isis, and Horus. The similarities, noted by Budge and everyone who has compared the Egyptian Ausar/Auset/Heru (Osiris/Isis/Horus) allegory to the Gospel story, are striking. Both accounts are practically the same, e.g. the supernatural conception, the divine birth, the struggles against the enemy in the wilderness, and the resurrection from the dead to eternal life. The main difference between the “two versions”, is that the Gospel tale is considered historical and the Ausar/Auset/Heru (Osiris/Isis/Horus) cycle is an allegory. Allegories are intentionally chosen as a means for communicating knowledge. Allegories dramatize cosmic laws, principles, processes, relationships and functions, and express them in a way easy to understand. Once the inner meanings of the allegories have been revealed, they become marvels of simultaneous scientific and philosophical completeness and conciseness. The more they are studied, the richer they become. The ‘inner dimension’ of the teachings embedded into each story make them capable of revealing several layers...

Defending the View That Mathematics Is Like Father Christmas

...Defending the view that Mathematics is like Father Christmas An explanation of why one should not be persuaded by the Quine-Putnam indispensability thesis that mathematical objects exist. This essay will argue that the Quine-Putnam indispensability thesis is not particularly persuasive. It will be shown that there are good reasons to reject the idea that mathematics is indispensable to science and that, instead of accepting the existence of objects that are indispensable to scientific theories, one ought to reject the truth of the theory itself until all the indispensable objects are confirmed to exist by observation. The Quine-Putnam indispensability thesis challenges the idea that mathematical objects do not exist and are merely fictional entities. It is simple in form and is presented in the following way by Mark Colyvan[1]: Premise 1: If one must unavoidably cite certain objects in a scientific explanation then one must accept the existence of those objects. Premise 2: One must unavoidably cite mathematical objects in scientific explanations Conclusion: One must accept the existence of mathematical objects. The second premise of the Quine-Putnam indispensability thesis seems fairly intuitive at first glance, if one thinks of the majority of scientific explanations or problems that have been solved one will find some form of mathematics. Hartry Field approaches the indispensability thesis by questioning this common view that one has to cite mathematical objects...

Alberto The Dancing Alligator: My Analysis

A friend’s house, a pool party or a road trip – whatever the occasion may be, I always brought a book along to read. That was my first memory of being excited about a book. From the first book I read to the most recent one, reading has affected my life in various ways. As I got older, my English classes started introducing new types of literature and I was being exposed to new things. As time went on and I was being required to...

Paul Bloom's Essay 'The Baby In The Well'

...America is an empathy-driven society. American politicians, pastors and psychologists consistently preach the importance of empathy in creating a fair society for everyone. In “ The Baby in The Well,” an essay for the May 20, 2013 issue of The New Yorker, Canadian American Psychologist Paul Bloom makes a shocking case against empathy. He begins making his case by defining empathy, and admitting its conventional wisdom. Bloom then presents numerous situations in which empathy can mislead or has misled us. Finally, he wraps up his argument by asserting that while empathy will drive us to empathize only with someone we identify with, reasoning will ensure that we make the right decisions for the better of society and the world. Bloom achieves...

Carry out a STEP analysis on the extract about Mannesmann. (10 points) It was clear to many observers that by hiving off its attractive telecoms activities into a separate company Mannesmann risked becoming vulnerable to an unwelcome take-over. Tony Blair, the British Prime Minister, however, demanded that Germany treat a British attempt to take over one of its firms with the same fairness extended to Germans buying up business in Britain. He rebuked Gerhard Schroeder for fighting the take-over, making it clear that in the new global economy he should not try to block it. ...of interest to social scientist as a means of understanding consumer society. The market power and buying power of the four major supermarkets, and their expansion has brought claims and counter claims from pro and anti supermarket factions. This essay describes supermarket power, and using social science concepts, claims and evidence explains both pro and anti supermarket viewpoints. Consumerism is a way of life in Britain today, and the way people shop has changed, with shopping malls and the big supermarkets taking a large percentage of the profit once enjoyed by local smaller shops. (Kevin Hetherington, 2009, pg.20). For those with more disposable income the brand of trainers they wear, the food they eat, the cars they drive may become a status symbol. Warren Susman believes people buy goods to express their personality, which gives them a sense of self esteem or status, a desired lifestyle to aim for. (Susman 2003,pg.280cited in J Allen 2009). Whilst other sections of society with less disposable income may find themselves excluded. Although of course people do still shop for essentials, shopping has become much more of a leisure pursuit, or pastime, whole television channels are dedicated to shopping, and the after Christmas sales often make the headlines and the national news. Social scientist Zygmunt Bauman describes modern society as the seduced and the repressed. Bauman uses these words to illustrate and convey his concept, of consumer’s being seduced or enticed...

Rhetorical Terms/Devices

...Rhetorical Terms/Devices Figurative language is the generic term for any artful deviation from the ordinary mode of speaking or writing. It is what makes up a writer’s style – how he or she uses language. The general thinking is that we are more likely to be persuaded by rhetoric that is interesting, even artful, rather than mundane. When John F. Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” (an example of anastrophe), it was more interesting – and more persuasive – than the simpler, “Don’t be selfish.” Indeed, politicians and pundits use these devices to achieve their desired effect on the reader or listener nearly every time they speak. The stylistic elements in a piece of writing work to produce a desired effect related to the text’s (and author’s) purpose, and thus reveals the rhetorical situation. In classical rhetoric, figures of speech are divided into two main groups: Schemes — Deviation from the ordinary pattern or arrangement of words (transference of order). Tropes — Deviation from the ordinary and principal meaning of a word (transference of meaning). *Important Note: Words marked with an asterisk* are words for which it would be impossible for you to write 3 examples for your weekly vocabulary assignment. In those cases, please write only the definition, in your own words, and the rhetorical uses/effect of that device, or do what you are instructed to do under those words. ...[pic] JPPSS ELA COURSE GUIDE 2011-2012 ENGLISH I The JPPSS Instructional Sequence Guides are aligned with the LA Comprehensive Curriculum. JPPSS Implementation of Activities in the Classroom Incorporation of activities into lesson plans is critical to the successful implementation of the Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum. The Comprehensive Curriculum indicates one way to align instruction with Louisiana standards, benchmarks, and grade-level expectations. The curriculum is aligned with state content standards, as defined by grade-level expectations (GLEs), and organized into coherent, time-bound units with sample activities and classroom assessments to guide teaching and learning. The units in the curriculum have been arranged so that the content to be assessed will be taught before the state testing dates. While teachers may substitute equivalent activities and assessments based on the instructional needs, learning styles, and interests of their students, the Comprehensive Curriculum should be a primary resource when planning instruction. Grade level expectations—not the textbook—should determine the content to be taught. Textbooks and other instructional materials should be used as resource in teaching the grade level expectations...
