...portray her feelings of distaste for Phil’s lifestyle. Through the heavy use of stereotypes, the author unveils her biases towards Phil and all people similar to him. The author denotes Phil as a cliché workaholic, referring to him as “a perfect type A” and a “classic” at that. With this description, Goodman makes it known that Phil is not unique in...

...Many theorists including Erik Erikson postulated in their perspectives of personality development that a person’s persons personality is formed by a certain influence throughout life, and changing a person’s personality would be exceedingly difficult. The belief in most theories is that changes in personality can be facilitated through therapy. This change can however be made without therapy but would be difficult and tome consuming; the movie Groundhog Day is perfect example of the process it takes to changes one’s personality without therapy as well as a prime example to utilize Erikson’s eight stages of life. The movie Groundhog Day is a comedy directed by Harold Ramis, starring Bill Murray as the main character Phil Connors. Phil Connors...

...Louie did not identify himself as a victim, but a survivor. Louie always kept calm and helped his friends. For example, in Hillenbrand's "Unbroken", it says "There were two gashes on the left side of Phil's forehead, by the hairline. Blood was spurting from the wounds and, mixed with seawater, sloshing in the bottom of the raft. Remembering what he had learned in Boy Scouts and his Honolulu first aid course, Louie ran his fingers down Phil's throats until he felt a pulse, the carotid artery." Based on this text, Louie kept calm the whole time. He never stopped and freaked out, as he just used other knowledge that he learned and applied it to the situation. Louie never just stopped and thought, "We are going to die!". He had confidence in everything and in every...

...In our day and age in America, one of the most impacting social issues is body image. If you go to a foreign country, they make jokes that the United States is going to sink because our diets are extremely unhealthy, our portion sizes are enormous and we do not exercise enough. While our health probably is not where it should be, pointing out this specific insecurity and making jokes will hurt people too. The meme Dr. Phil, uses bolded text, offensive humor and the celebrity status of Dr. Phil to have readers read the meme in a humorous way. These modes use pathos and ethos to achieve this end. The Dr. Phil meme to begin with has a large, white, bolded headline stating, “You’re Fat” and then the bottom line reads, “Don’t sugarcoat it // Cause you’ll eat that too”. The positioning of the wording is purposeful because the first thing you read is...

...Aristotle’s had many views and some would argue they can’t be used in modern time. This essay will be demonstrating how you can interpret the movie groundhog day using Aristotle’s eudaemonia-centered moral philosophy. Aristotle’s term for happiness or well-being is eudaemonia. (Melchert, 7) He explains this is more of flourishing rather than happiness. He goes on to explain there is a difference between being happy to just feeling happy. He also states that many people believe happiness is pleasure or that happiness is based on fame and honor. Aristotle’s argument is “The problem with fame and honor or popularity is that you are not in control of them.” To reintegrate his point, you can’t control what others view you or think of you as. He goes on to give an example of a flute player and says the way we determine if someone is a good flute player is if they play the flute with excellence. In turn, Aristotle determines ones eudaemonia based on their excellence or if they flourishing in their function in life. In the beginning of Groundhog Day, Phil Conner’s is the head...

...What You Mean: The Power of Friendship in Women's Lives (2000). "The Company Man" indicts corporate American for fostering the development of individuals who, apparently, have little in the wa y-of-souls: Goodman-paints a-bleak and pronounced portrait of people who have lost touch with their families with their values, and even with themselves. He worked himself to death, finally and precisely , at 3:00 A.M. Sunday morning, The obituary didn't say that, of course. It said that he died of a coronary thrombosis --I think that was it--but everyone among his friends and acquaintances knew it instantly. He was a perfect Type A, a workaholic, a classic, they said to each other and shook their heads --and thought for five or ten minutes about the way they lived. This man who worked himself to death finally a nd precisely at 3:00 A.M. Sunday morning --on his day off--was fifty-one years old and a vice...

...From the handouts, Ben Hill is the possible perpetrator I suspect most. The clue to make this conclusion is that he’s “all over” the TBC’s work. My following analysis is based on the fraud triangle. As regards to opportunity, Ben is the office manager and he has multiple authorities over the company’s operations including transaction verification and cash handling. It’s easy for him to perpetrate a fraud. The most obvious opportunity for him to commit a fraud is in purchasing equipment. Because Ben recently changed a vendor to Charlie Thurgood, who has a close relationship with him, it’s suspicious that they may collude with each other. When purchasing the equipment, Ben has access to the purchasing order which is “open”. He can possibly change the ordered quantity and ask Charlie to change the invoices which Charlie will personally drop with Michelle. It’s Ben who is the only person authorizes the purchase as well as the payment. There is no segregation of duties in this purchasing process. Besides Ben is the person responsible for hiring temporary employees and verifying the timesheet and checking. It’s also easy for him to add more employees who actually don’t exist. Moreover, Ben verifies the ticket log and keeps the money overnight. There is a chance for him to steal money from it too. The pressure making him to plot fraudulent schemes may come from his family background which shows he has “a bunch of ex-wives.” There is a possibility he needs to get money to afford the...

...Henri Boulangerie: Creating and Using a Master Budget BACKGROUND PART I: CREATING THE BUDGET MEETINGS WITH DIVISIONAL MANAGERS Henri Boulangerie is a medium-sized regional bakery that specializes in providing orders to grocery and convenience stores. Because of the popularity of its brand, it has also opened a small café for walk-in business. In order to maintain its high quality standard, Henri produces only three products: breakfast muffins, fresh bread, and chocolate chip cookies. Although business has been good in the past few years, a lucky contact with a large chain has recently allowed it to expand its brand out of the local region. Growth has been high since the new contract went into effect. Andy Griff, the chief executive officer (CEO) and founder, has arranged a meeting with a venture capital firm next week. Hopefully the meeting will result in the sale of some of Henri’s stock and an opportunity to establish a significant line of credit with the venture capital firm. These extra funds, if Andy can secure them, should provide sufficient money to meet Henri’s growth targets for the next few years. The venture capital firm’s assessment team has asked Andy to provide a quarterly master budget for the year that just began, complete with pro forma financial statements, at the meeting. They have expressed special interest in Henri’s earnings per share (EPS), cash flow from operations, and profit margins, indicating that good numbers in these...

...The Journey That Started In June And Ended in April Starting in mid-June, the Affton Americans Midget Major Central States Developmental Hockey League (CSDHL) team started the formation of the 2012-2013 hockey team. With a good core of returning players and several prospects, the June minicamp ended and based on the talent pool to pick from, the anticipation of a solid team was on the horizon. Then came the month of August, the final molding of this year’s team was complete and on paper this team looked to have a good chance at doing something special. Like in year’s past, a player’s meeting was conducted between the coaching staff and the players. The players were informed of the expectations the coaches demanded from them and for them as a team to set their goal (s). During the meeting we asked the players for only a few things: 1) Give us your all when we are on the ice 2) Conduct yourselves like mature, responsible young adults 3) Have fun. The players were told this is your season, you set your goals and the coaching staff will set their own goals. When it was all said and done each group had one goal. As coaches the goal is to develop these young men into better hockey players and adults and the players came up with one goal and that was to become National Champions. Hard work, dedication, and commitment to each other is what these boys did from the month of August through April. Some people ask, what does it take to become National Champions? Having been...

...Industry Overview Our group evaluated the ice cream industry from a Porter’s Five Forces perspective to determine the attractiveness of the market. Next, we observed Amy’s Ice Creams’ strategy through interviews and class concepts to see how Amy’s competes. Then, we assessed the strengths and weaknesses of the company’s strategy to offer recommendations for Amy’s Ice Creams going forward. Production and Sales The biggest activities in the ice cream industry consist of production and sales. In 2011, U.S. manufacturers produced 1.53 billion gallons of ice cream, a 6.5 percent increase from 2009. In addition, U.S. ice cream sellers sold 25.4 billion servings of ice cream and other frozen desserts. This represents a 2.4 percent increase from the previous year, a slight increase after two year of stagnant sales (New Hope 360). There are two channels for ice cream sales. The first channel is food service where customers visit an ice cream parlor and pay a premium for the product. The second channel is retail where customers purchase their favorite brand of ice cream from a retail chain like Wal-Mart. Food services constitute a larger portion of the two channels accounting for 57 percent of overall ice cream sales (New Hope 360). Products The products in the ice cream industry include premium ice creams and novelties. Premium ice creams include sorbet, sherbet, and fruity flavored ice products packaged by the pint or quart. ...The Power of COMMUNICATION Talk: Who Gets Heard and Why The Power of Talk: Who Gets Heard and Why by Deborah Tannen FROM THE SEPTEMBER–OCTOBER 1995 ISSUE T he head of a large division of a multinational corporation was running a meeting devoted to performance assessment. Each senior manager stood up, reviewed the individuals in his group, and evaluated them for promotion. Although there were women in every group, not one of them made the cut. One after another, each manager declared, in effect, that every woman in his group didn’t have the self-confidence needed to be promoted. The division head began to doubt his ears. How could it be that all the talented women in the division suffered from a lack of self-confidence? In all likelihood, they didn’t. Consider the many women who have left large corporations to start their own businesses, obviously exhibiting enough confidence to succeed on their own. Judgments about confidence can be inferred only from the way people present themselves, and much of that presentation is in the form of talk. The CEO of a major corporation told me that he often has to make decisions in five minutes about matters on which others may have worked five months. He said he uses this rule: If the person making the proposal seems confident, the CEO approves it. If not, he says no. This might seem like a reasonable approach. But my field of research, socio-linguistics, suggests otherwise. The CEO obviously thinks he knows what a confident person sounds...
